My guess is initially they wanted a land bridge to Crimea and to keep Ukraine out of NATO. And then things kept going and it spiraled into this longer war.

The West is sending Ukraine old military hardware, mostly stuff that were due replacing/upgrading. Now they'll have a good reason to do it. US defence contractors and weapons manufacturers get rich.

Higher energy prices means energy providers get rich as their bottom line is a percentage of what they charge. The more they can get away with charging the higher their bottom line in $.

Finally once the Ukraine is reduced to rubble it will be America who will rebuild it (for a fee). Their bankers have already started the bidding. Look how long it took the UK to pay off their war debts to the US.

The US sending Ukraine a few billion $ now in "aid" is nothing compared to what they'll see coming back.

What makes you think Russia will allow it? As NATO expands its involvement in Ukraine Russia will expand west until perhaps the whole of Ukraine is taken. Russia is not interested in USA getting a foothold right on their borders. It's their Cuban Missile Crisis. Seems like you still don't understand why Russia is in Ukraine.
