Controlled opposition doesn't mean that people in such positions are directly controlled by anyone. It means that the people with the most money and infuence/power prop up people who they think will toe the status quo line, or benefit them in another way.
Sort of like how Saddam Hussein was once a benefit to American interests while fighting Iran when Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini was in charge [after he had displaced Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who was on board with American interests]. Then when Saddam Hussein wanted to sell oil in Euros and not American dollars, he was considered a threat to American interests and had to be taken out in a war based on a pretext of lies.
At no point was Saddam Hussein answering to anyone. Different countries and groups could exert influence over him by way of sanctions or other economic matters, or by military measures, but he was in own man. Eventually he went rogue with respect to American interests, and was taken out.
Likewise with Putin - the man can go rogue at any time. It seems to me already has. NATO has spent $1 TRILLION on this war so far with respect to Russia spending only $50 billion. And from what I can tell - Russia is currently winning.
That's an epic fail by NATO, IMO.
How did NATO expect their military power to be when we prop up blue-haired lesbians into positions of power based on nothing OTHER than them being a blue-haired lesbians. Add that to a civilization of overweight and obese opioid-addicted alcoholics who haven't seen military conflict in their lifetimes...and here we are...
As Fortress said - Western governments need to be humbled.
