Christ he was big enough to eat hay.

Lol! 😂

It's possible he did.

I'm guessing he was a lineman on the high school team.

It was lucky that someone was literally filming the whole incident from start to finish. It captures incompetence all around - from Jesse Pinkman operating the ride and the kid [Tyre Sampson] for apparently not paying attention to the weight guideline, or noticing he wasn't locked in. Although that being said, for his part, I need to remind myself this was ultimately a 14-year-old boy. I feel like I would have known better at 14, but as wes says - he was just a kid.

Apparently, he aspired to have a future as a football player.

Allegedly, he was 43-lb overweight for the ride. I didn't know that rides had maximum weight limits. I only recall minimum height limits on rides, but I've never been on anything like this.

Something like that would definitely have a weight limit with the centrifugal force from those speeds.

That really him? Looked like a skinny kid. Should be an area to put your feet so peopl wouldn’t just fall out. Also should be a raised area 6-8” high at End of seat that goes between legs to keep you in position.

Lol...well, I guess it's starting to become apparent how this could have happened. Still though...I'm a little shocked a ride like this could even commence operation without ensuring everything is locked in...

Are these giant rises made like all the other cheap junk coming out of China? It's just baffling to me that there wouldn't be more built-in safety features...and it's not like the ride looks decades old or anything.

Most likely China. The issue with Theme park rides usually isn’t design issues (Schliterbahn water slide few years back) and attendant safety checks but maintenance and repair. Checking and repairing and maintaining these machines is super expensive and requires engineers. That’s why I only ride, rides at Disney. They have the money to keep up with operational costs and of course do so.

This was design and attendant failure for sure.

Very good explanation, Vince. I guess at the annual Canadian Lakehead Exhibition we have here, there were no such rides that had maximum weight limits - not that I remember, at least. Most were pretty standard rides - nothing like that 430-foot beast.

Also Vince - I respect that you didn't post the video. I understand why you made that judgment call. A lot of people are giving flak to the guy who filmed it for posting that.

That being said, it really shows the full context of what happened - damn, that incompetent amusement park is on for a lawsuit!

Great thread, Vince. Poor kid.

It was a "spare tire" but now it's flat.

I'd have to agree with this, with no disrespect intended to joswift.

As a parent, my thought process may be different, but only if I could be absolutely certain my son was dead, and managed to process that immediately, and move on - at which point, I might be in such a state to kill Jesse Pinkman, who operated the ride - even then, I'd need to be confident in knowing he was the one who messed things up, rather than a mechanical failure being responsible.

I think we make comments about what we would do, with the knowledge we have now. In the moment - things could be different.

Personally, I think joswift would be too busy trying to make sure the kid is ok to deal with that guy filming it. It's hard to say, but what I mean is that I think our attention wouldn't necessarily be on that if we were there in the moment.

After watching the video though, I wonder: where was the sense of immediacy with staff members? As per usual, all the women can do is scream and call for help, contributing nothing to the kid who fell off the ride.  ::) But frankly, the entire video was a disgrace to me, and literally everyone there made mistakes - even up to the level of the manufacturer.

Why didn't the ride have a bottom structure by the rider's crotch, essentially forcing them to stay seated? How was that ride even able to START without some mechanism capable of ensuring everyone was locked in place?

What an absolute boondoggle. At least the kid's parents will get a big settlement from this.

Yes, it's confirmed. Here is the original source of the video:

Out of curiosity, is there anything that this kid could have done to prevent this from happening? Would any amount of holding on tightly to the handles have allowed him to stay on? In most rides, you can not hold onto the handles, and you will still stay on the ride.
