I re-watched the original and then the next night saw the new one.  I think it's got better action than original, more suspense.  It's about the same as the first one overall on how good a movie it is, maybe a little better.  Viewership and audiences have changed, today we won't put up as much with long dragged out scenes apparently going nowhere.  The very minor character female pilot is really the only Woke aspect.  It gets 99% audience and 97% critics on Rotten Tomatoes, so that's very broad appeal.

Thank you sir.

I'll watch it as well.

36 years ago when the original came out, I think it made everyone want to become a fighter pilot.

Iceman was the guy I think most people wanted to emulate. The guy gave off confidence and had the look people assumed of a pilot. Maverick was emotional, short and arrogant. He was a showoff likely due to a Napoleonic complex and used his father's passing and prior career as a great pilot as crutch to why he needed to constantly chase the greatness of a ghost.

Holy shit, just watched it and I have to admit, I'd rate it a 10/10.

For those who have yet to watch it, do yourself a favor and watch Top Gun first, before catching Maverick. If possible, watch the first movie the night before. It will help to set the stage and emotionally condition you for what comes afterwards.

I'd say this is the best movie Cruise has ever made. Better than the first one.

I give it a 7.5/10. Thought the first half had a few corny parts like how they make Goose’s son look and act exactly like him all the way to the point where he’s playing “Great Balls of Fire” on the piano. Enjoyed the action towards the end and some of the nostalgia factors more so with Maverick than trying to work nostalgia into the new, younger characters

I guess it depends on your perspective. Top Gun was never my favorite movie of all time, but it was a classic 80's movie. The kind of thing that is synonymous to that era (much like the Rocky, Schwarzenegger, breakfast club, Bloodsport, Ferris Bueller, Lost Boys, stand by me movies), they were just the typical feel-good movies that the 80s were known for. I was always a fan of the 80's, so Top Gun Maverick brought that greatly appreciated nostalgic feeling.

Moreover, it's the kind of movie that most fans can appreciate regardless of age or background. Would I say it was the best movie I've ever seen? No. Has it been the best movie I've seen over the last 2-3 years? Easily.

Did Cruise do a good job? I thought so. He played the character as only he could.

If you haven't watched Breaking Bad by now (which I doubt, since you're a fan of better call Saul), watch it. It's the best TV show I've ever seen.

If you want a feel-good movie, that nostalgically takes you back to the 80's and has adrenaline-inducing action, check out Top Gun Maverick. I'm no movie critic and so I'm not over analyzing the acting in the film. No one in the film is Anthony Hopkins, but as for the actors being able to produce something that entertains for all 2hrs of the film, I'd say they did a great job.

If you do get a chance to watch it, please come back and give us your unbiased opinion.

Im going to finish Saul then start breaking bad

As for Top Gun and no doubt this movie it will be lost of planes passing each other and people in cockpits looking over their shoulders to try and see a plane thats about 5 miles away by the time they saw it coming

Its like the Bourne movies, I like them but they can be summed up in three lines

"Come on people we need to find this guy"

"My God, thats Jason Bourne"

"This ends tonight"

Could the success of Maverick spawn a revival of 80s style movies or are we only getting "woke" movies from now on?

Great question.

I think Top Gun Maverick stayed true to the theme of the first movie. I didn't feel an overwhelming sense of "woke" bullshit playing out in it, to be fair. Movies today are of course more politically correct than anything was prior to 1990, but I think this one wasn't pushing the woke envelope. You know, they didn't have a female pilot that is transitioning into a male or scenes of a woman injecting testosterone while praying for that one chest hair to sprout. It was a regular old school movie, action, romance and kept to the story-like from the first.

Could we see a revival of 80s style movies? I'd love that, but I think woke culture won't allow that. We're fucked man. From soon having to surrender our guns, to dealing daily with gender-sensitive pronouns to even men having to sit on the toilet to pee, it's all going down the shitter.

I was going to watch the new one, so I watched the old one first to get caught up.  The old one was so corny that I didn't go to see the new one.  I just can't seem to get myself to go see it but I'm old.

Same here. I remember how corny the first one was so I have no desire to see the 2nd. Since Netflix came out I have watched probably at least 1500 movies ranging all decades from silent movies to today and the 80's has to be the worst decade for movies.

If you enjoyed the first one then you will enjoy the second.
It was well done and it's the first time in a long time where I've been to the movies where the crowd was into it with ''Ooohhs and Aaaws"
I've always been a Val Kilmer fan {semi homo} so how hey managed to get him the film was fanastic 8)
It's definitely better if you've seen the first but I have a couple of young cousins who haven't and they said they still liked it.

Well it's making a shitload of money and is a huge success.  Tom Cruise's biggest film ever.  There will now be a Hollywood battle between making broad appeal movies and woke.

The following may have been discussed before and I may have missed it, but .....

Was that scene in the original TOP GUN (watched it last night on Prime) in which Cruise flew upside-down a few meters over the foreign pilot and said, "Watch the birdey!"  giving him the finger .... was that humanly/mechanically possible?

And in another scene the back seat 'navigator' turns around to watch a fighter jet pass to his rear in the distance.

I've never got off the round in a fighter jet but I have sat in one or two  buckeled/tied  down well enough which limited my turning ability so that I could not turn around to watch any passing object .... bird, saucer, or jet in flight.

Any real fighter pilots here who can respond to the above.

As a Top Gun myself, call sign “Fortress”, I can state the first is possible. Did it in an interception campaign over the North Atlantic.
