In 2006, we had a Mr. Getbig physique contest.
In 2007, we had a 225-lb deadlift for reps contest.
Dave Palumbo did many "Bros vs. Pros" contests, with a 405 deadlift for reps, and 315 bench press for reps.
Off the top of my head, Andy Haman got 315x20 at the bench contest, and Derek Poundstone got 405x26 for deadlift, and was beaten by someone who got 405x27. I may be mistaken about Poundstone's reps...but I'm almost certain he was beaten by someone who got 405x27. I seem to recall another person who got around 27, but was disqualified on the last few reps due to a questionable lockout.
Toney Freeman got 275x27 for deadlift, which may have been a deadlift your body weight contest.
Michael Liberatore benched 225 for something like 30+ reps, but he had his earphones in, and didn't hear anyone when they told him the reps weren't counted, because they were 3/4 reps.
In 2012, Brad Rowe benched 225x43 during an Animal Cage contest in 2012, but slightly injured his chest doing that. Mike Van Wyck got 200-lb dumbbells for reps also in the Animal Cage in 2012, but also sustained a pec strain doing that.
Ronnie Coleman was said to get 225x77 at the 1997 Arnold Classic expo. That's basically unheard of. In 2005, Nasser El Sonbaty got 14 reps with perfect form, and Phil Heath got something like 40 reps - though Nasser claimed that being the first to go, and using perfect form is why he got so few reps.
Palumbo said Eric Spoto benched 315x43, but I'm not sure if that was during a Bros vs. Pros contest, or elsewhere. Spoto previously held world record in the raw bench press record with a bench of 722-lb, in 2013.
Personally, I wouldn't want to push myself with 315, as my lifetime best was 315x8. But a 225 bench for reps contest would be pretty cool. I'd get 15-30, depending on things - and would just listen to my body, and not push myself to my absolute max, to prevent injury.
Now that my training is going well, I'd be in for a Getbig contest, if we had one.
I like the "put up or shut up" nature of contests. You'd think from reading the boards, everyone benches 405 for 8-12 clean, but I know that's not the case.
Is there any interest in this? Because I haven't been able to compete in anything for the past two years because of the pandemic restrictions, and I think it would be a cool project for Getbig.
Yay or nay?
