Calibrated Plates
« on: December 26, 2022, 11:32:11 AM »
Who has them? Turns out most of our home plates are off by up to a pound which actually does make a difference in some lifts. So when training for a powerlifting even you either need to weigh your plates and adjust (obviously this is the practical cheap way to go) or get fancy an order calibrated plates. Does anyone have them did anyone go all out and get them in Kilo like a real powerlfiting event? Rogue has them in Kilo and pound but most events are kilo. Ghost also has some cheaper but aquired by rogue and not all available now. I saw some Titan fitness ones a little cheaper than rogue. Ivanko is actually more expensive. But the calibrated are thinner and color painted and supposedly more accurate would be cool to get a set. I wish they marked pounds and kilos on the same plate but I guess that would be too simple.

This would explain all the arguing about your squatting.

Events do use plates that are weighed and inspected.

Seems like a silly question coming from someone who has spent their entire life as an athlete, hanky.

Buy the Rogue. They are becoming the standard at most of the small meets and a few of the larger ones. You could also go Eleiko, which is still the most premium line, they are on a good sale -

https://eleiko.com/en-us/equipment/plates/powerlifting/3000232-eleiko-ipf-powerlifting-competition-plate-20-kg?utm_term=&utm_campaign=PMax_Eleiko_US&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=3397350135&hsa_cam=18634446411&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInKjgw4SY_AIVh-DICh03tQ3VEAQYAyABEgIQbPD_BwE .

Calibrated plates are guaranteed within 10 grams of stated weight. Calibrated bumpers are the same.

Machined iron plates and good training bumpers are +/- 2% usually.

Regular cast plates can be off =/- 5lbs maybe at most on plates up to about #45, #55. Smaller plates are more accurate, larger plates less.

yeah every powerlifting meet I was in used calibrated weights and by rule if a world record was set they had to weigh the weight that was lifted to get it certified. My weights at home were I remember guaranteed to weigh at least what was marked on the plate. I weighed one of my 100 lb plates just using a scale at work and it was a few ounces over 100lbs.

I don't and wouldn't.

It's not that serious.

I've never even seen them except at the trendy CrossFit gyms.

Yup!

At the Olympic weightlifting gym i trained at years ago we had a perfectly balanced set of weights we kept in the back for competitions.

Generally the weights we trained with were just standard plates, but none of them were off by more than a couple ounces. We did have a 45 pound plate that was 46.5 pounds, which was quite a bit off. They put a mark on it and used it for the leg press sled.

Unless you are going for a recorded lift - or preparing for one - there really is no need for them.  99% of people who pick up weights won't ever need it.

    OH NO.

I remember years ago we weighed most of the 45 pounders at a LA Fitness. The gym and weights were brand new.

They were all within a pound of 45.

Then we realized the three different scales at the gym were also off by around a pound.

It threw everyone for a loop and a few guys complained to the manager about it. :D

I didn't care, because it's not that serious.

Everything is built with limited tolerances.

Do you plan on strict curling more than 225 pounds? That’s 2 45 pound plates per side, even if you used bumper plates how much more room would you need? Thin plates for a curling bar is a waste. Also it’s not like you’re benching or squatting heavy.

I noticed you posted a picture curling in jeans, shouldn’t you be lifting in a singlet in order to recreate meet settings?

Incremental adjustments would not require calibrated plates, regular plates would work fine in this case.

This was a good question for a novice home gymer.
Hope this helps.

Get the Kilo plates, they "feel" lighter than pounds

All of my old York milled plates are either spot on, or off by < .5 lbs. They would mill the backs to shave them to weight.
All of my Ivanko 45's (eight of them) are on the money.

I had an Eleiko set for a long time but I sold it off, it just took up room. But yes, the junk plates at Dicks Sports (and lots of others) are off by 2, 3 even saw some off by 4 lbs.
(Chinese Weider plates, etc).

Its just another failure to add to his long list
He stumbled across the strict curl by accident , found out he could curl 150lbs, realised he didnt know anyone else who could beat that so now its his "thing"

He will soon meet people at the shows who will be way better than him then rather than trying to improve he will take the easy way out and quit, just like hes done with everything else hes tried.

That's so negative, Swifty.
