"Judge" is a very weird profession in today's America. Two types of people become judges:
- Failed lawyers, who can't hack it at a large firm and can't keep an independent practice above water.
- Lawyers with extremely warped personalities: They care more for power and less for money. Though they could make much more money in private practice, they live for the feeling of power over others. (And as lawyers are already very cursed personalities, these judges are like cursed^cursed.)
I'd say that the split is about fifty-fifty.
Honestly, if the legal system were torn down and Judges were replaced with AIs, the average American would benefit enormously. It's almost impossible to convey how fucked-up the system is right now. It has attracted, and is run by, the worst people.
Back when I lived in Detroit I worked around a lot of judges in the 36th district court. Many were truly honorable, very bright and just.
I was often impressed with their reasoning and judgements. Of course there were whackos too. But the 36th district court was limited to misdemeanors and small claims ci il stuff and traffic offenses and some pre exams for felony cases that went to tge 3rd circuit court.
The 3rd circuit was total opposite. The intelligent, well reasoned, impartial judge was the exception. Most were drunk on their own power and authority. I would often see them asleep during testimony!
Your take on the 2 kinds of judge is interesting. And perhaps mostly accurate. I now occasionally work around judges in Multnomah county and they are mostly worthless. Only attempt to appeal to the liberal rhetoric of the community.
I'd like to believe that there are still some promising, intelligent and logical judges out there.
