Best back and shoulder massage devices or similar?
« on: June 08, 2023, 06:17:16 PM »
My fucking traps/levator scapulae and neck area fucking KILLS me and I can't manage to get those specific spots with a lacrosse ball. Is there some shit you guys recommend for this, a device or something?

I am basically in pain all day in these areas and it's extremely annoying. I have a massage pad that I lay on but that doesn't exactly get the area above the clavicles very well (or at all). Really can't stand this shit anymore which is why I'm posting here. It feels like it starts high on the back/sides of my neck/head and goes all the way down to roughly where the shoulders meet the clavicles.

I have one of these gizmos: https://www.amazon.com/ALLJOY-Massager-Heat%EF%BC%8CElectric-Kneading-Shoulder/dp/B097D4R34L?th=1

It took me a long time to get used to how awkward it is, but now I am literally in love with it.  no homo.

soft tissue work is at best a temp fix, if you want to be pain free fix the action that's causing the pain. do you dead hang? do you do any t spine mobility\rotation work?

This.  The pain is a signal. Locate the source and focus your efforts there.  I’d suggest an MRI. I mean it sounds bad and like you don’t want to fuck around with it.  Your body is trying to tell you something.   Listen to it.

Take ibuproefen for a week (1 pill every 5-6 hours)

Stop any lifting until better.

Loosen up with joint rotations.

Only gentle exercise like walking if possible.

If you're going the nsaid route, why not naproxen, which is one pill every 12.

Full discloure, I try to avoid nsaids unless it's a short term injury thing.

It's a great drug if used properly.

Follow use and dosing instructions.

Not more than six 200-400mg tablets per 24 hour period spaced 4-6 hours apart.
Do not use longer then 10 days without a break.

I avoid them too.

Still, sometimes your inflammation just won't subside without help.
Your inflamed tissues just rub on one another and stay inflamed.

None of these drugs should be used continuously.

I bought a cheap massage gun from Amazon last year and it's great - different heads on it for different angles and parts. It was only like 25 pounds. It's this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Electric-Percussion-Massager-Portable-Multifunction/dp/B08MJZY9PJ

There were all sorts of various guns in that price range. For the money - couldn't recommend it enough. I specifically bought it for trap tension and splenius capitis going all the way to the back of the skull - I was hoping it might help with the headaches I've been getting possibly being tension headaches related to my neck. Works great if the soreness after is anything to go by. Definitely helps, in my experience.

Ok, my understanding is it need to be continually in your bloodstream for 36 hours (or something)....so why not use naproxen, as it's easier to schedule and not have to take a pill every 4-6?

Muscle relaxant Orphenadrine before sleep.

Anti-inflammatory for a month or longer, ideally a COX-2 inhibitor such as Etoricoxib or Celecoxib, which do not irritate the stomach.

Sure, use Naproxen if you like.

Ibuproefen starts working approx. 30 minutes taking.

Sometimes you don't need 24 hours of pain relief, i.e. a headache.

Ibuprofen might be better than naproxen for someone predisposed to heart trouble.
