Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell reportedly has only days left to live after suffering liver failure.

The band’s manager told TMZ that Harwell is in hospice care, and his family and friends have gathered to say their final goodbyes. He is not expected to survive beyond next week.

Harwell co-founded Smash Mouth in 1994. The band has two top 10 singles to their name — “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star” — and their sophomore album Astro Lounge went triple platinum. Both “All-Star” and Smash Mouth’s cover of “I’m a Believer” were featured prominently in the first Shrek film.

Harwell had a son named Presley who died in July 2001 from acute lymphocytic leukemia at the age of 6 months.[12] Subsequently, Harwell created a medical research fund in Presley's name.[12]

In 2013, Harwell was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and Wernicke encephalopathy, which can affect motor functions such as speech and memory, and heart failure. Harwell implied he retired because these problems hindered his ability to perform well.[13]

In September 2023, Harwells representative reported that he was in hospice care for liver failure and has days to live.

It was the most chaotic show she's seen in her WHOLE life. All 19 years. I'm sure the Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato concerts were pretty wild though.

He looked bad there. His eyes look swollen shut. Not doubt due to a failing liver.

Losing your child at 6 months old could break anyone.

Don't know anything about the lead singer of Smash Mouth. That said, the liver is incredibly resilient. Case in point, you can literally remove 90% of the liver and it can still regenerate, pretty amazing huh!?! Also, most forms of acute and chronic liver failure can be reversible if the causative precipitant is corrected or removed.

Reports online suggest chronic alcohol abuse. Sadly, if you can't kick the habit, it is possible to develop alcoholic liver cirrhosis and if you don't stop drinking after developing the condition, most people die in under 5 years.

I have an older cousin right now who has liver failure and won't quit drinking(and I suspect pills as well). She has yellow skin, crashing cars, falling down everywhere, ambulance rides weekly... she was an Olympic level athlete at one point. Now she's just a drunk/drugged liar who doesn't have much time left and still thinks she's outsmarting everyone while it takes her. Really sad. She has a young adult son who is getting crushed by all this.

I have three other close friends that died around 40 from the same thing. They were all day every day drinkers. I think about their short lives a lot.

No he got it from pills then became a heavy drinker after the diagnosis, I was the heavy drinker and he didn’t like to drink at all but I gave that up at 29. He wouldn’t take his meds, would drink allday and eventually he started puking up blood and a month or so after that he started puking crazy blood and had a seizure and eventually choked to death on his own blood. Sad to watch him go this route. At 16 he decided to become a horse shoer and by 21 he was making 150k a year and was living the life then got into Percs then oCs then heroin and lost it all. He could pull any chick he wanted, very good looking kid and just threw it all away but it did take quite a while he started around 22-23 and died at 46.

Hospice can be at a facility or at home.  I suspect that he's doing hospice care at home.

My father and mother-in-law did hospice care at home.

as a general rule, non-alcos recover from wernicke. alcos don't. bc they continue drinking, don't let body recover, etc
