Yes, I think they used less in general. Few dared to go beyond what most others were using. The 3 grams for a physique athlete is too much, so they think. But compared to what? Gains aren't llinear when dosing but I think in a few instances 3 grams can give some extra gains compared to say 1200mg that some assume they do.

No one group of beings is stoopider than today's bodybuilders.  The so-called "Golden Age" was just that because they were worried about what would happen to them in later years and because competitions were not a year 'round thing.

It is also because back then competitors trained for years without drugs because they were nearly unknown and not that easy to get for the average man.  They developed a foundation first.  And they weren't on boatloads all year 'round.  Genetics came into play for those very reasons. 

Now?  Everyone knows it's all drugs and so they start 'em young. This results in shorter bodybuilders because an inrush of testosterone signals the arrival of puberty  and the maturation of the skeletal structure.

I know a guy who was there (Gold's Venice) back in the 70's and said it was an ampule (or two) of each compound a day and as many orals they could handle without too much acid reflux. Guys shooting each other up in the locker room before training sessions and dudes with a large bag of Dbol handing them out like candy. Remember many of these guys had Doctor supervision, so if things got out of whack, they reduced their drug usage quickly.

Also, most guys only used a high amount for a few months a year. They would ramp up their usage coming into a show, growing into the show as the way most guy did it. It was common for guys to take long periods off gear to clean themselves out.

Obviously, everyone downplays the "golden era" as it has a sort of cult following of men who want to believe it was achievable naturally or on minimal amounts. Human nature will always prevail as all narcissistic mean and "athletes" have the "anything to win mentality". You think if these guys got big on 800mg of Deca a week they didn't double it? Shit was cheap from Mexico. Hell, most of these guys sold it. Part of the Venice scene being what is was is due to its proximity to Mexico and easy drugs.

Drugs today are no weaker than those of yesteryear, in fact most of them are probably stronger. Powders are so cheap these days you can make a vial of Test or Deca for less than $5.

The gear i get in Mexican pharmacies is top notch stuff. Even the UGL stuff from a good source is high quality gear. It's so easy to make quality gear these days. The bathtub brew guys have been gone with the wind a decade ago.

Like all things Old School people want to preserve it as some sort of utopia and the "good ol' days". When it was the same attitude of drug abuse we have today.

Today people complain about depression and libido/performance with Deca, some say no one wet crazy from Deca whereas Victor Black claims that longtime users, like decades, it makes them just plain weird. i dont think guys from the 70's used very man injectables , the plastic disposables we use today did not become common till the late 80's early 90's , cleaning the old glass ones and even getting your hands on them seemed like a pain in the ass no pun intended

The current stuff is made in China, Russia, Mexico in garage labs with counterfeit boxing and inserts is garbage. Probably mixed with a dirty flip flop. I don't use or recommend steroids. I only been around the bodybuilding scene for a long time.

I work in pharma research. If the conditions aren't perfect you end up with at the very least stuff that is contaminated and at the most  toxic. You can't fuck around with substances you inject.
