A girl at our gym hangs upside down from a chinning bar and lifts a dumbell from below her head up to her waist

Its basically a dumbell pullover

I would say something but I am waiting for her legs to unravel and her fall on her head
Frank Zane did some weird exercises hanging using gravity boots. A DB Row i believe if it helped him i´ve no idea.
Since man invented the wheel people have tried to find some other variation.

It loads the glutes. Why would it be a waste of time? What is the thought process?

It’s just ridiculous. It’s a pain to have to set up the barbell and the bench. And you have to take up a bunch of space. Yeah I guess you’ll get a glute burn during it. Doesn’t really help you correct any disfunction / compensations you may have-it just trains you to learn that move. But at end of day, do whatever you want. If you enjoy doing them, fine. If you like squatting every day and you feel good, fine. There is no gym surveillance security force that travels the world monitoring gym goers and fines those in violation. What happens if you just do half squats and enjoy them? Who gets hurt and who suffers? Do your hip thrusts if you like them. You’re not going to become a viral overnight success or a famous a list celeb who has to turn down multiple billion dollar contract offers. It’s not going to unite the world nor will it cause the temples to crumble and the locusts to plague the cities.

yes good post & it´s true people can make fools of themselves if they want in the Gym but i hate their ranting on youtube about how great these exercises are.
serious squats, lunges or step ups give the muscles all they need for every deep muscle fibre.

No need for a bar and weights. Keep it oldskool, just get your training partner to hop on and straddle you.

😆😆 LOLOL!!

These are great.

Some arrange step up platforms and do kettlebell deads standing on them. With so little motion that they would not need the elevation in the first place…

Deadlifts from a low rac with small iron plates. When normal bumbers would lift the bar to same height…

You probably didn't read the whole thread. I said squats are better, lunges, didn't mention deads but they are great too. But the dude said the consensus was that they were pretty much completely useless, but how are they useless if they load the glutes, which they definitely do? What's wrong with doing hip-loaded squats, lunges and then finishing off with the thrusts? That was my thought process. Do you disagree?

It's like the 'gynecologists chair' exercise in the gym. "Oh that's just for chicks." But why? The thrusts may look 'feminine' for some, I don't know for what reason, but they load the glutes. You just have to do a hard thrusting workout and see what is sore the next day.

Not the best but not useless.

yes good post & it´s true people can make fools of themselves

It's fine if you think they look like fools. But I've seen serious powerlifters do them and I don't recall anyone snickering.  8)

The current preponderance of glute endowed youtube women indicates some effectiveness to this exercise.

Since most Getbiggers have easily over 30 years of training experience.....

I will take any info on this seriously

I get asked constantly about it .... I feel this exercise (Barbell hip thrust) is pretty much useless for muscular development

It's easy to lift a barbell resting on your hips even if you have never trained in your life.

Thats why you see in recent years so many people out of shape doing this movement, feeling good about themselves and not seeing results in the long run ...

Do you do it, if so, does it work?

Thanks .

WooooSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Nobody asks you constantly about hip thrusts  LOL

I don't do them currently as there is no machine hip thrust at my current gym and no way am I setting it up with a reg barbell or even smith machine. These were already starting to become viral in 2014, 10 years ago! There were endless debates on their utility just a couple of years ago and arguments on how to do them correctly lol.

They might provide tension at the fully extended range. But you could do that squatting with a band around your waist too.

Lots of people sell glute programs so there has to be some variation there. When the best glute program could be explained with one word: squat.

Its great for glute hypertrophy not sure how many guys are looking for that though?  It loads the hips/glutes when they are maximally contracted aka at there fully shortened muscle length.  Squats load the hips and glutes when the muscle is maximally lengthened (as long as you go deep enough) probably easier to do with a low bar back squat.  Curls get the girls.  Hip thrusts get you?
