You said, 'Anyone repeating that "money can't buy you happiness" line has probably never been wealthy...' It is quite the opposite, many people who have never experienced wealth believe they could be happy if only they had more money. Over the course of my very long life, I have personally/intimately known a fair number of wealthy folks, some were happy and some not.
Most people are happy some of the time. Almost nobody is happy all of the time.
I've had the privilege of interacting with people that range from homeless to incredibly wealthy. It's true that wealthy people can be unhappy, as the story I posted demonstrates (although we don't know if the guy suffered from depression or mental illness). But I was addressing the overstatement about money. Money absolutely affects a person's happiness. Just look at what money problems do to marriages. It can be devastating.
I recall repeating that line about money back when I was a starving student when talking to a "wealthy" friend. He said something I will never forget: money gives you the power of choice.
Another line I've never forgotten (which I've probably posted before) was by Bill Cosby on whether money can buy you happiness. He said: I've been rich and I've been poor, and I'd rather be rich.
We can talk about anecdotes, etc., but there is simply no denying that money can have a direct impact on someone's happiness. Not a guarantee and some people will be miserable regardless, but it's really naïve to embrace that oft-repeated line.
