"Steven Spielberg has expressed concern over climate change, calling it a "scientific reality" that he is "terrified" of. However, he has also faced accusations of hypocrisy due to his personal carbon emissions from extensive private jet use.
Statements on climate change
In a 2018 interview, Spielberg said, "I'm terrified of [global warming]... It's a true piece of real, measurable, quantifiable science".
He has also criticized those who "go blithely through life" without considering their impact on the planet, stating, "everybody has to be held responsible".
Spielberg also noted the need for collective action, saying "we are going to have to have a kind of confrontation with destiny unless we do something about it today".
Inconsistent environmental actions
Spielberg's public climate change advocacy has been challenged by his personal actions, leading to accusations of hypocrisy from some critics.
In 2022, data showed that his private jet had burned more than $116,000 worth of jet fuel in just two months, emitting at least 179 tons of carbon dioxide. This is significantly higher than the average American's annual carbon footprint.
The use of his private jet for even short trips has been a point of contention among those who track celebrity flights and emissions.
