Would he though?  It’s more difficult to commit suicide by other means.  The act of committing suicide is a highly impulsive one, and any additional steps in the process makes the individual less likely to carry it out. 

In 1998, Britain changed packaging for acetaminophen, requiring blister packaging of 16 pills when sold over the counter in places like convenience stores and for packages of 32 pills in pharmacies.  Overdose deaths and liver transplants from Tylenol overdoses declined significantly.  Sure, if you’re really determined, you can just buy a bunch of packs and take them all at once.  But most suicidal people aren’t that determined.

I’m not against gun ownership, and I’m not saying that this gentleman wouldn’t have found another way to do it.  But it’s well established that having access to a gun increases one’s chance of using it on oneself.
