It was a smash when it first arrived.  The format changed (for the worse) but that was just keeping up with the times changing really.

It was impressive and new in the 1980s. In Europe cable TV was a radical step, as in many countries commercial television was illegal / banned. So when laws were changed, loads of new Channels were suddenly available. Especially for the 12 to 20 year old it was very appealing. As MTV was so different and fresh compared to old traditional TV

But times and technology have changed immensely, now MTV is old and something from a bygone era.

I still watch music videos on the free Samsung channels. VEVO and there is another brand. No commentary just old videos. My wife gets a kick out of it when I watch them. Probably nostalgia.
