Total B.S. usyk vs Verhooven? You gotta be kidding me!
« on: February 28, 2026, 06:50:51 PM »
Wes, Abe, any other boxing fans on here, you see this shit?

Verhooven, a kickboxer-apparently a very good kickboxer- with exactly 1 professional boxing win under his belt, that happened about 10 years ago or longer, will be fighting the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, Oleksander Usyk.

Wardley, Kabayel, even Parker and Ajagba are all deserving of a title fight. Shit, I'd say Andy Ruiz is more deserving of a title shot than Rico Verhooven.

Who the fuck on earth was asking for this bullshit? Id rather watch the Pacquiao Mayweather rematch, whi h is something I have zero interest watching.

I hope Usyk get knocked out just for sitting on the title and wasting everyone's time while deserving contenders wait for this bullshit to playout. Usyk is 40 years old, and if Fury wins his comeback fight, you can bet they'll do a 3rd fight before Kabayel or Wardley get their shot.

I don't know.  Boxing is at an all time low.  That said, Usyk has been a steadying force in the division and has fought the best guys so far.  If anyone deserves a gimmick, I guess it's him.  I'm being diplomatic.  I agree with you.  This should not be happening.

The fat mexican has had his chance. Now let Verhoeven take a shot at the title! Nobody is interested in seeing the same fights over and over again. Time for some fresh blood in the sport.

Agree - I'm very disappointed in Usyk going the the comical match up
route -
Boxing has lost 90+% of it's integrity with these ridiculous
fights -
only thing I can say is that there are millions of idiotic boxing
"Fans" that'll pay good money to watch such rubbish.
Look how much AJ got for embarrassing himself & looking like a clown
against Jake - Zero risk & an easy pay day.
I suppose thats why Usyk is doing this stupidity.

I mean, maybe he has earned a soft touch, but literally no one was asking for a Rico Verhooven fight. The heavyweight champ of the world sets the tone of the whole sport. Im not even sure Usyk won the Fury and AJ rematches.

While the lb4lb conversation had been Crawford,  Inoue or Usyk? Crawford jumped up to Super Middleweight and thrashed Canelo. Inoue is fighting Nakatani - a legit match up between two killers, and Usyk responds with this? Given that Crawford retired,  I will consider the Inoue Nakatani winner the lb4lb champ, probably with Shakur Stevenson in 3rd. I know people don't like Stevenson,  but he's the modern day Pernell Whitaker.

Only issue I take is with the Fury and AJ rematches.  He clearly won both rematches.

Yes, he won them. My point is the rematches were much closer than their initial fights. Watching those fights in real time, the outcome was in doubt right up to the point the decision was announced (regardless of what the judges scorecards read) while their first fights were obvious Usyk victories, IMO.

Watching the fights live I had usky comfortably winning the rematches  - though they were a bit closer.

100%

Not accusing Beak of this but often times in combat sports judges human nature tends to reward the losing fighter for merely doing better.  Not necessarily winning the rounds or fight.

I've found that turning the sound off of the commentary especially if a British fighter is involved
Much better to judge the fights as there's far to much bias towards the British fighter.
This applies to UK Commentary.

When you factor in the Height/ weight/ reach disadvantage for Usyk & that he was on the
Attack all the time Backing up the Bigger heavier men - He Won convincingly.

I watched the Delahoya Trinidad fight and remembered being dismayed at Lampley and Merchant sucking Oscar off the whole night.  I remember saying before they read the cards that I don't think this was one sided like they did.  Then they showed Harold Ledermans unofficial card and he had it dead even.

I rewatched it the next day without volume and I felt like a case could have been made for Trinidad winning 7-5.

I had a similar experience watching the first Azumah Nelson Jeff Fenech fight, which resulted in a draw. At the time it was universally regarded as a terrible decision,  with many believing Fenech won handily. My first take was Nelson won the first 2 rounds clearly and the last 2 rounds clearly. I didn't see it as a particularly big stretch to say that you could've found 2 more rounds to give to Nelson or a combination of Nelson rounds and even rounds. So I watched the fight with the volume off and found a draw to be within reason. Now, I admit, I was a massive fan of Azumah Nelson, and Fenech's whining after the fight was similar to watching a child throwing a tantrum.

Likewise,  I never had a problem with Usyk getting the nod in the rematches... my distaste for him making this fight is probably influencing my own hindsight.

I notice that the commentators always have their favourite and only mention their fighters punches and totally ignore when they get hit

There’s always an “A-side” — the fighter with the strong amateur pedigree, financial backers, a major promotional deal, and connections to the promoter and network. While an exciting fight is good for business, an undefeated A-side is even better.

Now consider the incentives. If you’re a referee or judge assigned to a major card — flown overseas, well-paid, put up in a luxury hotel — and your calls (a point deduction, a standing 8-count, an honest scorecard) cost the A-side the fight, you may not get invited back. The same dynamic applies to judges. Score a close fight for the B-side when a slight lean toward the A-side would secure his win, and those lucrative assignments may disappear.

Commentators operate differently but face similar pressures. Their network often has a promotional relationship or multi-fight deal with the A-side. So they shape the narrative in real time, emphasizing the A-side’s success and downplaying moments that threaten him. That framing can soften the impact of a controversial scorecard, ignored fouls, or a questionable stoppage.

The result isn’t necessarily outright “fixing,” but an unspoken understanding: everyone benefits from the A-side winning — and few are willing to jeopardize future opportunities by disrupting that outcome.

This. When I worked out at a boxing gym we had "champion" kickboxers who transitioned to boxing and didn't last long.
