She entered two talent contest in her teens and won both.  One was a local town contest and the other was at her school.

In the town contest she sang Out Here On My Own.  Made famous from Irene Cara and the Movie Fame.

In the school talent show she sang Hopelessly Devoted To You.

Note how respectful she is of Olivia consciously not trying to out sing her.
