LONDON -- Opponents of smoking got a breath of fresh air as Parliament passed a bill that will put cigarettes out of reach for future generations.

"The end of smoking, and the devastating harm it causes, is no longer uncertain - it's inevitable," Hazel Cheeseman, chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, said after a decades-long campaign in favor of legislation approved Tuesday.

Children born after Dec. 31, 2008, will be banned from ever buying cigarettes under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.

The legislation that needs approval by King Charles III - a formality - before taking effect will also allow the government to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including flavors and packaging.

It is currently illegal to sell cigarettes, tobacco products, or vapes to people younger than 18. But most youths today will continue to face a ban their entire life as the minimum age to buy cigarettes rises each year.

The passage gives the U.K. one of the toughest anti-smoking measures in the world. The law is similar to one New Zealand lawmakers passed in 2022, but that was repealed by a subsequent government.

The number of people who smoke in Britain has declined by two-thirds since the 1970s, but some 6.4 million people - or about 13% of the population - still smoke, according to official figures.

Authorities say smoking causes some 80,000 deaths a year in the U.K, and remains the number one preventable cause of death, disability and poor health.

"Children in the U.K. will be part of the first smoke-free generation, protected from a lifetime of addiction and harm," Health Secretary Wes Streeting said.

I don't think this is appropriate to tell adults what they can / can not do.

BUT, I would be for a public ban, and enforcing litter laws.

In other words, if they could make invisible to others, let adults be adults.

They should get people to switch to vaping and snuff/Swedish snus. Nicotine itself isn't really a problem. I have a snus pouch in for all of my waking hours. Gum damage can get to be a problem but it's not life threatening. While I was sick recently I had fungus in my mouth and the pouches hurt like a SOB; miserable :D

The Churchill pic is appropriate LOL. He also had an exemption to bring in a couple of daily quarts of spirits during US prohibition :D

The last time I was in the UK was so surprised at how few people seemed to be smoking compared to how I remembered it. The UK was always a smokers place but it was unusual to see people smoking on my last visit in 2023.

Lots of people were vaping, but at least that's more comfortable for those of us walking past, and it stops the cigarette butts all over the ground.

I'd love to see something similar happen in Germany. You can be in the middle of the Black Forest here and some dirty fucker has left their butts all over the ground.

they even have smoking bans on train platforms with no roof on, its a wide open space, you could walk to the end and smoke with zero issues to anyone else ,yet I see people walk off the platform down the steps and go outside the station
