Most jobs pay you for holidays.  Most jobs have sick leave and vacation pay.  Most jobs offer medical benefits and retirement plan.

when you're a personal trainer and you get sick, you don't get paid.
when your client gets sick or goes on vacation, you don't get paid.

most people who can afford a personal trainer have real jobs, so you have to train them early in the morning or late at night.  to train enough clients to make it worthwhile often means you have many hours in the middle of the day with nothing to do.

most gyms want a cut, such as $10 a hour.

if you do your job well and actually teach the client how to work out properly, they no longer need your services.

It's the consequenses of having your own business, in my case when I'm sick I have someone cover for me so we don't lose anything, I'm usually busy all day long and if I don't have anyone for a few hours, I try to market or do something related to my business. As for teaching them and no longer needing you, that's where sales comes in, I change my routeins all the time and that keeps them coming back for more, I've had most of my clients for more than 3 years and some since I've started.

It's not my job....it's my business and I treat it as such!!

Not true. I work out of a gym, I pay my $450.00 per month and can have as many client as I'm able to handle which is around 10-14 per day plus I bring on another trainer to expand. Don't work for anyone but yourself and be patient, it's worth it in the end. I live a pretty nice lifestyle in a nice neighborhood (30yards from the sand) drive a nice car, send my boy to private school, and my fiance doesn't have to work if she doesn't want too. Like I said be patient....it's worth it!
cash no taxes it sounds :)

Exactly.  Anything to make someone sore the next day so they can say "Yeah, my trainer taught me this new excercise and I couldn't move the next day."  Well of course because most any activity you have never done before is going to make you sore.  MOST PT's are morons.

My financials say other wise.

I've said this before....any moron can teach someone how to do a compound exercise!!

How does your financials have anything to do with mos trainers being morons?

The vast majority of trainers I deal with are broke, scrounging for a deal on a used piece of equipt. or a price break.

also, just like any other self-employed job, you gotta be hungrier than the other guys in your field.  While they sleep, you write up a marketing plan.  While they watch sitcoms at night, you design a catchy logo.  While they're spenging money at Outback Steak House, you take that cash and buy a few more shirts.  This goes for all personal service fields, not just PT.

Above all, know your shit.  If you keep up with current trends and have a solid base of knowledge and experience in your area, you'll make a living on it.  Just be ready for the next "trend", whether it be core balls, super-slow, or if HIT makes another round.  If you get in front of it (or help define it!) you'll make some decent coin.

Yes, and you would know because you're such a successful businessman. ::)

You're not going to strike it rich right off the get-go in any job.  Work hard at whatever you want to do, and you'll make a solid living.

Make sure you know your stuff and that you are in decent shape.  I currently train at two gyms.  At one of thegyms, this one  trainer could wear a 'c or 'd cup.  Thanks dude, but I've already got my form down on cupcake eating.

The most successful PT's I know only do it part-time or on the side as in a side-job.

The ones who work for a big corporate chain gym...are flat broke and dont make shit. They have a 60/40 rule and when they have no client they dont get paid at all...and the gym manager expect them to act as an actual employee by wiping down equipment, putting weights away etc...most of them quit after 3-4 months.

Your best bet IMO is to stay in top shape...convert a basement or a garage or something into a studio. Have the most basic equipment and land one or two clients...get them in shape and watch the roll-over effect happen if you are lucky. Dont quit your day-job...use it as a part time hustle.

I have a buddy who has a large spare-bedroom w/ a couple becnhes, dumbbell set, power rack and various other pieces...he has mostly female clients...he charges $40 a session cash...pay as they go. 4-5 sessions a week translates to about $200 extra bucks a week. His mindset is to use PTing as a way where he never has to dip into his real paycheck from his day-job to pay for gas, groceries, supps, lunch-money and mild entertainment cash. Thats a good mindset to have going into this...then who knows...it might roll-over to where you dont have to have a real day-job but then again...it isnt definite and probably isnt worth risking it. Good luck!

You dont have a clue about training as your pictures prove it and yet you tried to sell your "insight" on weight training and gaining size to people more clueless then yer self.  ::)

I am giving advice on plain old competitive strategy.  Stay ahead of the trends, outwork your competition, sacrifice, etc.  That advice works whether you train clients or build model trains for a living.

I think a really sound business plan is to bad mouth competitors, maybe some bribery to adjust zoning laws, etc...  and a little bit of overt threatening behavior to anyone else who dares compete against you.

Worked for the mob for years. ;D

   Hi folks,
wondering from everyones experience in fitness/bodybuilding if there is any $$ in Persol Training?

 thanks,
onelife

As with almost any business, marketing is the life-blood of the business. Marketing can make the difference between the success or failure of any business.  It’s the main propellant of any business, the engine that drives it and the mechanism that keeps it alive and thriving!

The science of marketing compels people to try your service, it gets them to savor the benefits so they come back again and again, and it successfully entices them to purchase more when they do come back (in this case more times a week or additional products and services, offer referrals,etc.).  Marketing incorporates sales, advertising, product design, public relations, positioning and a host of other less obvious ingredients and disciplines.  http://www.outrageousresults.com/

You can be a great personal trainer and fail because you fail at marketing OR you can be a great personal trainer AND a great marketer. That's the key.
and keep moving!

Living in a place where money is good helps too.  Many women have husbands who work and make all the money.  The husbands usually pay for whatever their wives want, especially if it is going to keep them looking good.  I have always been against PT's simply because I think people can workout with a friend and get as much help.  A PT is good for beginners who don't know anything and need help to get adjusted and to learn proper technique but after a month or so of this they should be able to do it on their own or with a friend.  But, my attitude has changed a little.  I am training this kid who was 6'3" and about 140 lbs. when I started with him early last month.  He weighed 152 on Friday and his strength has gone up a whole lot.  His dad knew my past history and asked me to train his kid.  He asked me how much and I truly said well I'll just do it, he can work in with me.  He said no I want to pay you how much do you want.  I said I don't know how about $50 each session.  He said how about $75.  SO I said yes.  SO I train this kid 3 times a week.  I actually train just before he gets there with another guy who is really strong.  But staying an extra hour and getting in a little more is nothing big.  But, it gives me an extra $900 a month for basically doing nothing more than making sure the kid works out and I want him to gain at least 8 pounds a month and get stronger.

So yes there is money in PT.  Working for a gym though doesn't pay a PT very well.  Stay on your own.  Get some cards made and every hot chick you see give them your card.  You have to market yourself to do good.  DOn't be shy.  In Florida like here many hot chicks with older guys who want their girl to stay hot.  The money is there
