Drugmakers found a promising cure for the obesity epidemic and their stocks were rewarded for it. Now, investors are salivating over a new crop of companies tackling a more purely aesthetic problem: baldness.

Pattern hair loss affects an estimated 50 million men and 30 million women in the US, but there have been no new approved drugs since the late 1990s. The promise of novel treatments has sent shares of Veradermics Inc., which trades as “MANE,” up nearly 500% since the company went public in February, while Absci Corp.’s stock has more than doubled so far in 2026. Cosmo NV also had positive results for an experimental male hair-loss treatment, though its Zurich-listed shares have been weighed down by the success of US competitors.

Those who are ineligible for hair transplant surgery — or can’t afford it — are left with two main options: over-the-counter topical minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine, or prescription finasteride, branded as Propecia. They can come with some debilitating side effects; minoxidil is linked to heart palpitations while finasteride is known to lower sex drive. Wall Street sees new treatments as an untapped goldmine, full of consumers who are willing to pay out-of-pocket for better options, reminiscent of the boom in GLP-1 weight-loss drugs.

“People will fly all the way to Turkey to have some hair moved around on their head,” said Needham analyst Gil Blum, who rates Absci a buy. “Can you imagine if you could do that without getting a hair transplant?”

Drugmakers and investors alike are hoping for a repeat of the successes of the weight-loss drugs that vaulted Eli Lilly & Co.’s market value across the $1 trillion threshold and made Novo Nordisk A/S, briefly, the most valuable company in Europe.

Today's men need hair on their chests not their heads.

This market has been oversaturated with gimmicks and stuff for a while.  Red light caps, pills, oils, etc....  though the hair transplant seems to be the most ideal.  I have read that people say the pain afterwards is awful for a couple weeks though.

If they really had a miracle drug that would regrow hair on George costanza, they might have something.  Otherwise it’s basically been a solved problem - finasteride/minoxidil to keep what you have, transplants to restore what you’ve lost.

If I was balding now I would get on oral minoxidil and .5mg dutasteride twice weekly or a much lower than common dose of finasteride.

Might be better to try the topical first to see if that works then do the oral if the topical doesn't have the effect that you want. The oral will lower BP but could also create a collection of fluid around your heart.

PP405 is incredibly promising and has a novel mechanism. Everychem is trying to synthesize it last time I checked.

Yes though you're waiting forever to see if the topical works and for a lot of folks it seems it's hard to tell if it's actually doing anything. I've read pretty convincing claims that the oral can be very effective in some, even causing significant regrowth. Some baldies use it just to thicken their beards. I've been meaning to order it online for this reason but never got around to it.

The topical is a pain in the ass, you’ve got to apply it a few times a day and if you sweat and it gets into your eyes it stings.  I’ve heard anecdotally that it ages one’s face via collagen inhibition or something, dunno if it’s true or not.  Either way, I tried it for like a week and found it too much hassle to maintain.

Finasteride is so easy, just one pill a day and it’s kept my hairline in place for ten years now.  Only regret is not starting it earlier.  I’m tempted to try oral minoxidil, I’ve seen some impressive reports of regrowth.

A baldness cure has been coming for 20 years... it is always 5 years away.

I think it is decades away, it is essentially follicle/skin regeneration

When you see treatments coming out that can restore a third degree burn victim's skin to normal, that's when a baldness cure is not far way. That would also unlock advanced anti-ageing treatments, turning back the clock to where a 60 year old can look 16 again without surgery, fillers and all that crap... that's the level of breakthrough required, it's not a simple matter at all.
