If something gets shared with you on Instagram, it recommends "others you may know" that the person who shared the post also follow or know.  It's constantly trying to get you to link up more and more people.  It's not uncommon to see recommendations for a friend or co-worker or schoolmates' friends or family who you had no idea about.  Fucked up.

Not sure if someone clicking on an Instagram link you post on the internet results in this same effect, but it might.

It knows your phone contacts so I’m pretty sure it scrubs through and finds people that way. I have it on my work phone and it suggests work acquaintances a lot. Also, if someone shares a link, it will say who it is. More than one getbigger has posted an IG link here and when you click it it says “whoever” has shared this with you. I’ve reached out to a few and let them know.
