Does this type of ab machine do anything?
« on: November 01, 2026, 06:03:25 AM »

my gym has one which is constantly in use - by fat people. I've tried it a couple of times and couldn't work out how it's supposed to benefit me more than other exercises.

Anyone use one and get results from it?

The cheap version of that -

was popular with strongmen and weightlifters for a bit. It takes out the hip flexor cheat that happens with an ab board. I don't think it will be horrible to use, but it's an $11,000 machine, so I don't think many will see it around. You could do kneeling or standing abs on a lat machine for a similar effect.

had some new machines in the gym today, a shoulder raise machine that replaces two dumbells for side raises

Those machines are Gods way of telling you that you have too much money

If you can’t get a good contraction in your abs with it, don’t worry about it.  It’s just another option.

Is this a serious question or is that a banana in your pants?

This machine is ok, but I think many of the machines at a gym are more for their look and convenience.

A cheap swiss ball is far more valuable to a work-out than this machine.

It’s an okay piece of equipment. It’s not a miracle machine and is not the best thing since sliced bread. If you want to use it, or if you enjoy using it, then that’s fine. You don’t need a huge range of motion on it.

I wouldn’t only use this machine as your single core exercise. More important is being able to brace your core under heavy load and have the ability to brace your core during all exercises, such as pull-ups, pulldowns, squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. It’s one thing to be able to feel your abs while sitting in place on this machine, but are you able to feel your abs working during bigger movements, such as squats and jumping? If you can only feel your abs sitting on this machine, then that’s no good. I’m not a big fan of doing an entire workout sitting on machines. I notice a lot of fat people sit while at the gym. Seems to me that if they just come to the gym to sit and lift light weights, they might as well just stay home, sit on their sofa, march their feet in place, and lift some carpenter pencils overhead.

Yes, many fat people use this machine at my gym too. But so do many in shape folks as well. A lot of fat people eat pizza and burgers. But so do a lot of fit folks.

If you do them at the end of a workout you'll get good results, i never went for weighted ab exercises but regardless with these type of crunches you never lower your legs to the floor which is constant tension
Sometimes I did them fast & Sometimes slower
Some people do like machines but I just never really felt them
Each to their own

What results are you looking for?

Not really looking for any specific results. I usually do hanging leg raises and cable crunches. I see a lot of people using it though and I wonder what it's doing for them. If they hold onto the grips overhead, it looks like they're pulling their upper body down to their lower body - not the core doing that work.

The admittedly very few times I tried this thing I experienced what I saw others doing. You grab the handles above your head and pull your upper body into a crunch position. But then it's not the core working, it's me pulling the handles. But without the handles there's no real way to anchor your upper body to move through a range of motion. I do leg raises and cable crunches mainly and I'm satisfied with them - just seen a lot of traffic by this machine and after looking at the people and trying it myself couldn't really understand it.
