I was thinking...
SO bodybuilders, as most of us are, in the amateur level- you all know what goes into it; Instense training, dieting (eating healthy primarily, with high amounts of proteins), and in most cases alot of cardio.

In many cases, bodybuilder ARE athletes..I picked football, but I should throw in BOXING too, and if anyone can find a similar sport thats closely related to bodybuilding- please add-

Instead of killing themselves to be pros, couldnt they easily get to the NFL? Well, not easily, but you know what I mean. The tools are there, dedication to physical training, dedication period. ALot of pro athletese hardly hit the gym it seems..I guess its mostly talent..

DOnt mention the gear because im saying hypthetically, someone who decides there is no future in pro bodybuilding, and decides to put their hard work and passion towards trying to make it in another venue, like boxing, maybe fighting? Or in the NFL..

ANd if this is a dumb ass though, you have permission to say so.lol.. Isnt it true though? Bodybuilders, AND fitness competitors, and female bodybuilders true athletes, that could compete in any sport.

Just because you are sports bound doesn't mean that actual bodybuilders are.

Food for though!

That is true. I realized that while i was typing out the thread..Its a cruel, sad sport isnt it? I mean, compared to othe rpro sports. Hell, a pro football player, third stringer, someone that SUCKS riding the pine- they are making what, $300,000 a year at least?

In bodybuilding its such a sacrifice, so much hard work, so much let down, aaarrgh..it sucks.. Everyone else that places under the TOP 5 at the MR 0 is hurting for cash i remember readin in some BB mag..is this true?

Nathan Wonsley was a running back in the NFL and is now a pro bodybuilder. Many bodybuilders were athletes in other sports before becoming bodybuilders not sure of any the other way around.

I think both Cormier and Dex were given football scholarships but couldn't accept them. I know Dex had to support his family and thus didn't go. I think Cormier sustained an injury. I read about The Blade in one of his columns. As for Chris, I might be completely wrong - I think Lonnie Teper said something about it at an Ironman but I could be full of shit . . .

Ray seems like too much of a pussy to have played, unless he was a place-kicker.  Robinson, Coleman and Waller played as well as Katz. Muscle & strength would help but it takes a certain degree of technique, athleticism & toughness to know how to give & take hits.

Exactly what do you mean by HUGE.  He is 5'7" how huge could he have been. DId he even play outside of high school football if that.  You perciption of huge is way off.  He might have done pretty well in Pop Warner since he could have passed for 12 even though he was 16.  I believe that more than anything else.

I think if you have a bodybuilder / lean powerlifter that is 5'11" weighs 200lbs

Benches 2.5 X bodyweight
DLs 3.5 X Bodyweight
Squats 3.25 X Bodyweight

Someobody with this type of power would be a very effective player in the NFL.., they put more emphasis than ever on athletic abilities so somebody with this type of capability would get a chance.

there is no money in football unless your a pro. To become a Pro you have to be very good, how many college football players are there in the country? Most of them have no chance of turning pro.

Combines are intrested in 4 things:

Time in the 40
Long jump lenght
Shuttle
And vertical leap

If your numbers are good, the 225 bench test is irrelevant, deadlifts and squats are not even tested. Combine coaches are looking for speed and explosive power. Bottom line, athletes can become bodybuilders but bodybuilders at lets say National level and above cannot, they would be way too susceptible to running injuries. If I've said it once I'll say it a million times...Bodybuilders ARE NOT athletes, not to say some were at one time!

Onlyme, I thought you and Shawn had called a truce? Saying that he could have passed for 12 when 16 is not conducive to building bridges.. is it?

I thought so too but he attacked me on another thread again.  I was wondering the same thing.  Oh well now you can see how much he enjoys it.

The guys who get drafted into the NFL are tremendous natural athletes. They tend to have a big bone structure, and are naturally big and strong. Most bodybuilders are not naturally big or athletic. They wouldn't have gone into bodybuilding if they had the athletic ability to play in the NFL.

I don't think it's good enough to be strong. Even Bill Kazmaier couldn't make it in the NFL.

Haney was a star running back in high school, and got hurt playing in college. I think his career-ending injury was a blessing in disguise.

Katz was an offensive lineman for the Jets.

I remember when Ferrigno had a try-out with Toronto as a lineman. No football experience, so it would have been nearly impossible to step in and play without any prior exposure.

Waller played in the CFL. Robby was a RB, in Florida i think.

Yes and someone with the stats that I listed would likely have an excellent vertical and 40 time, probably in the elite range for all athletes that enter the combine.

hey genius didn't you know that powerlifters and o-lifters have some of the fastest 40s and highest verticals.

The O -lifters kept pace with the olympic sprinters in the 40

I think that they shouldn't have problems keeping up with NFL players LOL

I was a noseguard, but dislocated both my shoulders, several time. Ran about 4.8-4.9 in the 40, @ 270lbs.
