1000lb machine calf raises
« on: May 10, 2006, 02:01:36 AM »
we all know Arnold was told by Reg Park to do sets of 10 with 1000lbs to make his calves grow, and alot of people have questioned the validity of the claim.

I remember reading in an edition of Muscle Mag International an interview with Mike Morris (remember him). He said that he once rigged up a machine with 1000lbs and got a few reps out of it, but calves dont respond to low reps so he never did it again.

Now if Mike Morris could rep with it, then why not Arnold? I know Mike had massive, powerful legs but then Arnolds werent too bad themselves

Why bother speculating over something that none of us can prove nor would be any better off if we did. Believe what you want to believe amd if that means arnold benching 500lbs, getting massive on 2 dbol a day or whatever bullshit story he's peddled in the last 30 years then so be it.

Well I can add to this from my perspective. I have busted My ass for years to get the calves I want and some of the best gains I've ever made was when I did standing calve raises with 800+ pounds on it.

I would warm up with stretches and do 1 set 12 with 400lbs, 1 set 10 with 600lbs and my last set was 1x6 reps with 800+ ( the machine went over 800, I don't know by how much. I did 3 sets 3 times per week and  my results were great ( juice free. )

Just the Beef's 2 cents.

The calf muscle is probably the strongest muscle in your body, next wold be the trapzius.... the full range of motion is not great at all .. i could do 1000 lbs calf raises if there was a machine that catered to that ..

I too believe the calf muscle is one of the toughest. After alyou hear about torn quads, hams, pecs, lats, bis and tris but never a torn calf. Theyre built for extreme work and continuous load unlike the other pussy muscles ive just mentioned.

IMO using the heaviest weights possible for calves and traps is the key to building them. Get sick with it. Ya don't need a lot of sets. Just extreme weight and "decent" form.

it's all about range of motion.  I can squat 1100 and shrug 1600, if we can measure the range of motion in millimeters.

I have always believed that if a certain muscle get sore very easily through weight trainimg, it usually has the capacity to become your very best body part.

i trained at temple gym in 93 -94,an can remember doing calves 1 lunch time, took me longer to unload the machine than my actual calf workout, dorian had been there 1st,either i miscounted or there was best part of 1400lbs on the fucka.guess that shits on the "high rep" theory

totally agree...1000 lbs is very possible...even more...like Doz.

i agree with everything written here...you can get out 6-8 reps or so with 1000lbs + with less ROM...but it is the working range...no need to go right down or right up for calves (for most bparts for that matter)....so why compromise?

my best gains were with 1000lbs or so...on standing machine and leg press(not as much).

and im no freak genetically...6'1" 280 then....320now...lol...i use my home weights as door stops.

Trust me; if you put 1,100 pounds on your back you would collapse to the ground like a teenage girl seeing Elvis for the first time. ::)

Even worse ;D, it involves training calves less when people can't get them to grow. Eventually he says you only have to train them once a fortnight.

If they don't grow on that then you are supposed to train them even less :o

I don't train calves very often myself but I think time under tension is as important as the rep count. Thus 6 slow reps can be the equivalent of 20 normal reps. Just a thought anyway.
