BIG FISH / Little Fish
« on: May 10, 2006, 09:49:09 PM »

It's Deja Vu all over again-with Wayne's new federation shaking things up a little

with a fraction of the money Vince McMahon had to splurge on the last major challenge to the Weider Empire

one thing in Wayne's favor is Joe & Co. are 25 years older and that much closer to that
big PUMP sUP ROOM IN THE SKY

Is the classic case of an option to be a BIG FISH in a little pond for all those IFBB wannabees who were that close winning a National Title (year after year) should the Phil Heaths not have signed on the dotted line quite yet - is FLEX MAG one issue away from being homeless ??

If Chick was pushing 40 and hadn't cracked a National show would he'd be the first one on the PDI bandwagon - it will be very intersting -and this time next year we'll know if it has legs quads-calves etc...

Not likely for 1 very good reason...

The pursuit was for an IFBB pro card...to compete with the BEST in the world...to add my name to the list of greats that have won the Nationals or the USA ...to see my picture on the wall at Golds Gym, the Mecca of BB where all the former champs have trained.

Simply accepting a pro card with another federation, (PDI or otherwise) without proving yourself would have been an empty pro card in my book.

It's called HISTORY...and being a part of it. It was never about the money...it's about the prestige, the respect among your peers that YOU are now part of the club, adding yourself to the legacy that preceded you.

Others may have a different reasoning for THEIR goals, ambitions...this was mine.

That IFBB pro card might be just a cheap piece of shit visually...but it's a symbol of an accomplishment, of a goal achieved, and of a dream realised by many young kids that picked up their first Flex mag, or MD...and knew that THAT'S what they wanted to be.

It's not the look of the card thats important...it's what it represents.

DEEP BOB , VERY DEEP !!!

But true , I wanted and strived for the card as it signiled success, I had to win over 30 odd amature shows to get to the piont where i said now can i have my pro status , it wasnt about the money or anything for me it was was about what I had accomplished to get it and be there on the pro stage !!

Interesting that you'd compete in the Masters Division instead of the regular IFBB...

240, would you STFU already and get off Bob’s case.  Anyone that rides a pro’s jock like you do must be only a couple posts away from another crazy melt down at any given time.

I'm referring, of course, to the 67 year history of BB in pictures throughout the gym....

Bob I believe you deserve a lot more respect around here than you currently get. You represent a dying breed (or so it would seem) who have achieved your bodybuilding goals for the right reasons. I for one have learnt a lot from you and will go on doing so. Regardless of 240's tinted viewpoint of yourself it perplexes me that he speaks to with such distain. What is bodybuilding coming to when a web designer has more sway on a bodybuilding message board than an accomplished veteran of the sport?

this thread was not meant to be BASH BOB time

if you are talking history - Arnold never won an NPC show
1982 is still relatively not that long ago- 8 years before Pumping Iron was made
if we are talking BB History
So if PDI comes up with an amateur division - than a win would not be that hollow

Mike Matarazzo had the world at his feet right around the same time WWB attempted to
muscle in - he went with the IFBB for probably the very same reasons Chick mentions

maybe he should of taken the money and ran - as what does he have now -never won an IFBB show (I know it's not about winning ) he might of been a mainstream media star with movies -wrestling etc -

Got to clear up a few facts...

Arnold never won a an NPC show because there was no NPC, and he was from Europe...the AAU was the only federation to speak of...The NPC "USA" was an extention of the old AAU "Mr. USA"...which goes back to the 1940's or so...same with the Nationals( formerly the AAU"Mr. America", which dates back to 1939 and the Bert Goodrich/ John Grimek era.

Much like the winners of the AAU shows never gained any respect...same would happen with a PDI amateur div. If you don't beat the best, you don't get the respect. All the best bodybuilders were/are in the NPC...

Pumping Iron was filmed in 1975...

If Mike wanted to, he could've pursued a Wrestling or movie career if he chose...had nothing to do with BB. Mike made a lot of money and was one of the most sought out guest posers up until he retired...making money and SAVING it are two different things.

Lots of guys made huge money back min the day, only to blow it on material things and end up broke (Paul Dillet, Flex Wheeler, etc.)

That's why I say the IFBB should provide Money Management Solutions much like the NFL does.

Understood, but that's how the IFBB (and the Olympia) began. Winners of the NABBA (and later IFBB) Mr. Universe were allowed to compete in the Olympia. Any organization has to start somewhere. If they started only with amateur competitions, it'd take years before they had enough pros to hold a contest.

Difference was, the Olympia was put together to showcase top pro's from all other federations (especially the reigning 4 Mr. Universes...to see who REALLY was he best...

Were not talking about a hodgepodge of guys...some amateur, some pro, etc.

There's always been a level of respect among IFBB pros because everyone had to pay their dues the same...everyone had to reach a level of achievement just like the guy standing next to you on stage...even guys that didn't particularly like each other, still had that respect because we are all part of the same club.

Bob - yes -I should of worded it - that Arnold never competed in the NPC
as 1982 Arnold was making Conan movies -

you claim in your post of getting the facts straight the NPC USA  is a continuation of the AAU Mr USA

according to Musclememory.Com The AAU Mr USA was still happening well into the 90s
so that statement is not accurate - and I notice you did an AAU show in 1983
guess you were lucky to get out when you did otherwise you might of been another Jeff King

Meaning, get overlooked for a few years so the guys with seniority (but not neccesarily the best build) could get ahead because they paid their dues.

Sad.

Not a  continuation in the sense that they were the same federation...the AAU was still around...just didn't have the best BBers...they all went to the NPC early on.

Continuation in the sense that the best of the best amateurs were all competing against each other for a IFBB pro card...

The only AAU shows I did were when I first started...there was no NPC.
