Not a  continuation in the sense that they were the same federation...the AAU was still around...just didn't have the best BBers...they all went to the NPC early on.

Continuation in the sense that the best of the best amateurs were all competing against each other for a IFBB pro card...

The only AAU shows I did were when I first started...there was no NPC.

 Mediocre post, Bob!

Bob - hate to be a stickler for the facts
but the NPC started in 1982 - there was a NPC show in New York in 82
also a Teen USA and Nationals that same year
You won an overall AAU Teen show in 1983

when the NPC came around in 82 and took on the AAU
it was a bit like the break-up of MA BELL - The AAU was a monopoly
so this upstart  called the National Physique Committee challenged the monster(AAU)  and won - so the lucky ones stayed with the winner NPC
others weren't so fortunate.

BTW -Musclememory.Com is not a complete data base
there a tons of AAU shows that aren't documented - probably because it's hard to get the info from who is left at the AAU -and I'm sure NPC/IFBB stars like yourself would like to keep it that way

Not likely for 1 very good reason...

The pursuit was for an IFBB pro card...to compete with the BEST in the world...to add my name to the list of greats that have won the Nationals or the USA ...to see my picture on the wall at Golds Gym, the Mecca of BB where all the former champs have trained.

Simply accepting a pro card with another federation, (PDI or otherwise) without proving yourself would have been an empty pro card in my book.

It's called HISTORY...and being a part of it. It was never about the money...it's about the prestige, the respect among your peers that YOU are now part of the club, adding yourself to the legacy that preceded you.

Others may have a different reasoning for THEIR goals, ambitions...this was mine.

That IFBB pro card might be just a cheap piece of shit visually...but it's a symbol of an accomplishment, of a goal achieved, and of a dream realised by many young kids that picked up their first Flex mag, or MD...and knew that THAT'S what they wanted to be.

It's not the look of the card thats important...it's what it represents.

A least Bob is admiting his egocentric motives. Many pros (especially the less successful ones) are in denial...

I am a post hero. Are all of my posts great? No, but neither are all of President Bush's decisions excellent and he is still the greatest president of the 21st century.

I would say that in those nearly 6000 post, 4500 are garbage

I'm sure you're correct..however, not everyone was on board with the NPC as of that time, and there were AAU shows that were already scheduled, as they didn't just disappear...I was a 14 year old kid...I didn't have any allegiance to federations, or even have any knowledge of who was running what, etc.

Why would we (IFBB Pro's) care about info on the AAU? There were shows for some years after the NPC took over, there were winners of the Mr. America, etc...they just never received any respect/ recognition because everyone in BB knew the best BBers were in the NPC...I had nothing to do with it, those are the facts of the matter.

None of there semantics has anything to do with my original post or point...BTW.

Bob - looks like you have been spending too much time in LA LA
where spin is king  "I was just a 14 year old kid"

once again basing my facts on www.musclememory.com
it says you were born in 1965 - and you won an overall AAU Teen contest in 1983
So that would make you 18

sure it's ok to pooh pooh AAU shows now - but I bet that overall win meant a lot to you that night - as it would be many years before you would win overall again

this is not about semantics - I'm just sayin with all the different fractions of federations in Bodybuilding post-Pumping Iron ( with the exception of The Olympia )- it will never be equal to winning an Oscar for Best Actor (for example) where you can imagine   the Oscar winner going home and saying to himself  "geez" I'm now part of an elite list of greats Gary Cooper-Spencer Tracy-Denzel Washington

actually some of your contemporaries who won overall NPC USA turned out to be jailbirds and accused murderers - but let's not be judgemental

CORRECTION

looking at Bob Chick's stats at musclememory.com
he actually won the overall NPC Jr Nationals in 1987
just four years after winning Mr Teen AAU New York State
which is quite impressive considering he was under 25
and no wonder he made the right choice to stick with the NPC

the dry spell came after that when it took him into the next century (2000)
to win an overall contest National level contest

Bob if you want to argue semantics - some people believe the 21st century did not start until 2001

Got to clear up a few facts...

Arnold never won a an NPC show because there was no NPC, and he was from Europe...the AAU was the only federation to speak of...The NPC "USA" was an extention of the old AAU "Mr. USA"...which goes back to the 1940's or so...same with the Nationals( formerly the AAU"Mr. America", which dates back to 1939 and the Bert Goodrich/ John Grimek era.

Much like the winners of the AAU shows never gained any respect...same would happen with a PDI amateur div. If you don't beat the best, you don't get the respect. All the best bodybuilders were/are in the NPC...

Pumping Iron was filmed in 1975...

If Mike wanted to, he could've pursued a Wrestling or movie career if he chose...had nothing to do with BB. Mike made a lot of money and was one of the most sought out guest posers up until he retired...making money and SAVING it are two different things.

Lots of guys made huge money back min the day, only to blow it on material things and end up broke (Paul Dillet, Flex Wheeler, etc.)

Best example for what Bob is saying is Jeff King. Was in the AAU family and wanted to crossover to the IFBB. never did.

according to previous posts on this subject
Jeff King never hit it off with Jim Manion

King probably thought NPC would not be around that long - so no need for ass kissing
