Why no safety gear? That doesn't sound like a good idea 
Well, it's a brutal day-long hike to quarter-dome, where the pic above was taken. Everyone I went with was looking forward to the climax of the hike, which is the very top of half-dome. However, when we got there, we realized the poles that hold up the steel cables that allow for a relatively safe trek up the final stretch, where down! They get taken down during the wet season to discourage climbers from going up while it's slippery. However, as you can see from the pic it was a dry/sunny day. So, I decided to do it anyway...it's why I was there. It was physically grueling, specially after hiking all day. But the real hard part was overcoming the fear of being up so high with nothing to hold on to except a steel cable. It was even worse coming down.
