Not once. You have to remember that I came up in an enviroment sorrounded by the top pros and amatures of the 90's. Even from the getgo I knew there was no way in hell that I could ever reach their level. I also got to see the ugly side of the sport and wanted no part in it. Had I won the last show I did (1996 NPC LA), I would have tried for the CA and regardless of my placing I would have stoped. As it was I got smoked at the LA and chose to move on. After that show, I did not set foot inside a gym for three years

I've been training of and on since...

as for my marathon time 3:58:03...a personal best even though it was pouring rain. The average time for men was 4:32:08.

Keep in mind that Layne is "natural" (more natural than a full blown juicer anyway) and Mindspring isn't those contest pics. Not a fair judgement. But I will say I still think Mindspring could have taken him if he stayed natural, just better genetics. I will also give props to Layne, the guy really appears to bust his ass. It's a shame he doesn't have better genetics but he's making the best of what he's got.

He stays at around 6 percent bodyfat in the offseason.

6%?

More like 10%, which is still extremely lean.

A lot of BB pros compete at around 4-5 % BF.

Maybe you meant that he was @ around 9 %. Since 2-3% is generally the absolute minumum BF (some people call it zero percent bodyfat for some reason), and 3+6 = 9%.

The brutal part was that final climb. There is no safety gear. Just you, a cliff and a rope. All upper body strength for a solid 45 minutes. If you let go...you're dead. But, all worth it when you get the the top. The view is indescribable!!!

Well, it's a brutal day-long hike to quarter-dome, where the pic above was taken. Everyone I went with was looking forward to the climax of the hike, which is the very top of half-dome. However, when we got there, we realized the poles that hold up the steel cables that allow for a relatively safe trek up the final stretch, where down! They get taken down during the wet season to discourage climbers from going up while it's slippery. However, as you can see from the pic it was a dry/sunny day. So, I decided to do it anyway...it's why I was there. It was physically grueling, specially after hiking all day. But the real hard part was overcoming the fear of being up so high with nothing to hold on to except a steel cable. It was even worse coming down.

that sounds more dangerous and stupid (no offense) than anything bodybuilders do
