How well known was Yates in the UK during his reign?
« on: June 21, 2006, 06:26:59 PM »
This may have been asked here before.....every topic has been covered.

But I'm curious how "big" he was in the UK when he was the reigning Mr. O.

Was he on national TV?

Did the average person know about him?

Or was it the same as the US - nobody cares.

He was basically unknown in the UK he talked about this in a number of interveiws when he was in the U.S as soon as he stepped off the plance a number of people would spot him and ask for a autograph or pic , he also said once he won the Mr Olympia and started to do better financially he moved to a better neighborhood and the neighbors had no clue who he was just some big guy who lifts weights , but Ronnie touched on this as well in 99 that not much changed for him at that point.

It's funny because there are more people who know who's the Idaho golf champion, than there are those who know who Mr.Olympia is. It's funny in a very sad, pathetic way.

i'd say he was even less known than bodybuilders in the usa since it's not as big in uk as in us. also off-season with their clothes on bodybuilders are not that impressive, even to me i've seen competiting amateur bodybuilders that looks just like the next gym guy when you meet them on the street.
i've met dorian just after he retired, his buddy was the bigger of the two so most people would've thought HE was the champ...

many people would have simply thought he was a thug. which in fact he alledgedly was. Only time he would been recognised was by the odd gym freak in his area shopping or actually in gym.

Not very well known, one problem could have been his looks, not exactly marketable!
It hasn't helped...

Goudy, why was he "allegedly a thug?". I've never heard this.
Dorian was [and is] revered as a God amongst bodybulders and bodybuilding fans in the UK. During the nineties he was the only topic of conversation amongst gymrats. What was he taking, why did he do so few sets, what was he eating etc etc. When those infamous black and white photos came out everyone immediatley doubled their dosages. It is still impossible to underestimate the impact of those damn things - both good and bad. To give an example, in the early nineties a typical cycle [for the average gymrat, not a pro] would be 250mgs of test, 200mgs of deca and 30mgs of dbol. Nowdays a beginner would double that for their first cycle [except the dbol]. Back then you were considered pretty hardcore if you did 500mgs of test :o
Dorian occasionaly made the mainstream press, just details of his latest victory, usually followed by snide remarks about steroids.
