Shadow,

By having 3 shows in 3 days does not mean they are going in the right direction.

Can you elaborate?

dude its simple..more shows more coverage more athletes more money more bodybuilding recognition..also earlier they had 10 pro shows..now they have 15 pro shows all with sufficient prize money..and IFBB is definetly going the way it has always been..

This year they're having 3 European Grand Prix shows after the Olympia.   In 1997, they had 7.

I guess my question was your use of "Right direction"

More shows, does this mean there will be more judges (different) and truly be judged on their body, not who they are etc etc?

More shows still does not put them on ESPN (1 or 2), Sunshine (for FL) or any of the other shows...

Believe me I am all for trying to reinvigorate the IFBB but doing more shows is not going to do it. I miss the days of having bdybuilding on ESPN 2-3x a week, American Muscle, local shows etc etc.

I really hope the PDI succeeds so that it will wake up the sleeping giant aka IFBB

Good to see that they have an Olympia qualifier in Europe the week before the Olympia, the SANTA SUSANNA PRO GRAND PRIX http://www.stasusannafitweekend.com/ in spain.  Looks like all the competitors are non-US pros, so that event could bring in three (?) non-US bodybuilders, adding some more variety to the Olympia.  Here is the current list of competitors:

Marcos Chacon – Spain – www.marcoschacon.com
Paco Bautista – Spain – www.pacobautista.com
Silvio Samuel – Spain – saviour94@hotmail.com
Armando Alcazar – Spain – armandoalcazarifbb@hotmail.com
Dennis James – Germany – www.dennis-james.com
Mustafa Mohammad – Austria –
Markus Ruhl – Germany – www.markus-ruehl.de
Harold Marillier – United Kingdon – www.theforestgym.co.uk/Harold_Marillier/harold_marillier.html
Tomas Benagli – Italia – http://198.66.195.22/benagli/hb/index.html
Manfred Petautsching – Austria – www.manfredpetautschnig. com
Christian Lobarede – Chile – www.christianlobarede.cl
Tommi Thorvildsen – Norway – www.tommithorvildsen.net
Dennis Wolf – Germany – www.dennis-wolf.de/
John Barry Hodgson – United Kingdom – www.john-hodgson.com
Shehab Eldin – Netherlands – www.shehabeldin.nl
Alison Marνa – Netherlands – www.alisonmaria.nl
Josι Alves-Jorge – France –

Wonder if Tommi Thorvildsen can finally get back on the ball and come in large and shredded?  (He certainly hasn't lived up to his hype from a few years back.)

I don't think 'more shows' is the answer.

I used to think that having a true contest 'circuit', consisting of a bunch of low-level events, would be great for increasing exposure, but when you look at the numbers, that's not sound thinking.

The costs of a professional-quality venue are too great to justify the expense when you consider just how few people are actually willing to buy tickets to see a 'pro' bodybuilding event.  Then when you add in the costs of prize money, sanctioning, judges, etc., it just isn't worth it.

Imagine a world with 4 shows each year.

Mr Olympia, Arnold Classic, The Euro Show, and the LoneStar Showdown.

If you're in the continental US, there is likely a pro show in your timezone.  The caliber of athletes would be incredible, as you would have to get top 5 at the ASC, EUR, or TX to earn an O qualification (although it could be #6-10 should the top 5 already be qualified).

you wouldn't have shows closing, you wouldn't have these lame lineups.  Sponsors would fight for chances to be on banners.  Fans would go.  Of couse the athletes would do the shows, and they'd look great up there, as they didn't have to peak for the 10th time this year.    And if a VYO or muscletech wanted to "run" something, they could set up adjoining expos or events in conjunction with the shows.  Imagine going to Houston for a show, and spending Thurs night at the Vyo UFC match, Fri at the muscletech sports extravaganza, the BBing show on sat, and the Atlarge PLing Championships on Sunday.

lots of people are willing to buy tickets to a pro event, if you give them something to see.  that includes a contest where you don't know ahead of time what the results will be.

I'm sure you're not implying any IFBB show is more predetermination than free will.  Are you?

:)

no, that means that because of the judging criteria (mass over everything else) the same 3-4 guys win every show

Imagine going to Houston for a show, and spending Thurs night at the Vyo UFC match, Fri at the muscletech sports extravaganza, the BBing show on sat, and the Atlarge PLing Championships on Sunday.

this is the key problem.

there aren't enough bodybuilding fans to fly to Columbus for a long weekend in March,  Las Vegas in October, Texas when ever, Denver, Toronto, etc.    Who has the time or money to fly to one city or another many times a year for a weekend mega-event?

but there are many fans who would spend $50-100 for an evening show at a local theater.

a mega event may be necessary to convince people to fly in for the weekend, and since they are already spending all that money for the weekend, they'll buy tickets to the various bodybuilding contests.  but I believe the expo and all the other events kill the local ticket sales.    Walking around the $15 expo is often enough to satify your need to mingle with other bodybuilders and fans of bodybuilding.   No need to buy tickets for the main event.

I think a show in a major city aimed at the local fans could do quite well.   No expo. No dozens of side events.  Not even an official host hotel.    Judging at 1 pm, finals at 7 pm.    Advertising in the metropolitan area only.    Alternate weekly newspapers, bar rags.  have guys stand out in front of the hardcore gyms handing out cards.

Also, why do they rent a 5000 seat theater?

Why not get a REALLY NICE hall that seats 300, and sell tickets for a little more.  Value will go up, quality of event will go up, and the price to rent a room is a lot less than the price to rent the superdome :)

Just think how that could improve the pro's "soiled posing trunks" market!
