Tanning Memory?
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:03:32 PM »
I've been wondering this for awhile now and I thought I'd ask you guys. Is tanning similar to muscle memory? What I mean by this, say for instance you get tan one summer and then lose that tan during the winter, will it then be easier to get tanner again the following summer, or is it just like starting all over again? I was wondering because I used to be really white all year round so I started tanning during the summer a few years ago. Now it seems like every year it is easier to regain that tan. Also, it seems even during the fall and winter when I don't tan at all, that I still retain some color and am a shade darker than I used to be before I tanned at all. Just wondering what you guys thought of this.

Maybe there's some truth in this.
I've heard similar experiences.

It's obvious some people tan easier and differently than others (e.g. red skin rather than brown tan).

On holiday, I got a deep tan on the middle quad to lower legs, since I was wearing shorts. Months after, without tanning again, I still kept that contrast on my skin, since it was such a deep tan. I'm not sure about tan memory, but the skin does adapt to certain things.

I think it is true to some extent - when I first started using tanning beds it took me ages to get a decent colour - now I'll only use them three or four times a month and my tan stays constant all year round.  :)

He's from Knoxville.

I think it keeps the skin pigments active that's all. Tanning is actually damage to your skin and the pigments working ovetime to compensate for the damage done...tanning should be in cycles just like a steroid cycle IMO. Tan 4-5 weeks 3-4x's a week and take 3 weeks off and repeat.

Tanning is also cumulative...over time with consistency you will get darker because of pigmentation has to increase to meet the demands of the skin to the exposure to the rays.
