Start with the basic decent bourbons - knob creek, makers mark, etc. Sip it on the rocks. Eventually, start removing ice cubes and you're there.
I got into by accident. 15 years or so ago, I decided I didn't have "a drink". I saw a blurb in a magazine that said "jack daniels, rocks, get to know it". Ordered one that night and got the shivers on the first sip. Then, the ice melted a bit and it got better.. After awhile, you start to appreciate the different subtleties and stuff.
Once you do that, and eventually do a real TM type race, I believe my work will be done here.
