Trump has done well because this is the same base that cheered a serious topic like the death penalty in 2012 when perry bragged about all the people he gave the needle. They have blood lust, war boners. Talking about killing the families of terrrorists and carpet bombing villages to teach people a lesson - that is great for the base at debates... but doesn't fly with moderate voters that decide elections.
I agree with you. Stooping to the level of the lowest denominator is never a successful venture.
