Saw it at midnight. The movie absolutely perfect. I am about 90% sure that Heath Ledger will get the best actor Oscar. Jack Nicholson as much as I love the guy was simply destroyed by Ledgers take on the Joker. This is the Batman/Joker movie that Bob Kane would finally be proud of. Christian Bale while overshadowed by Ledger (impossible not to be in this case) was better than ever and brought even more layers to the character. And Dent/Two-Face was incredible too. Finally a comic book movie has topped Spider-man 2. This will be nominated for best picture.

Not this time. Marvel will never top this. Ironman, Spider-man 2, and Hulk come the closest but this sets the standard. Hellboy 2 failed miserably in my eyes.

Not to ask the obvious, but is it fair to compare it with the original 1989 edition?

although the 1989 orginal has less action....its batmobile and "bat jet" are exactly the same as the comic and are very cool.....jack N got the best actor oscar if i am not wrong...... it was directed by tim burton

batman returns also by tim burton is alright.... at least it kept the "darkness" of the comic.

batman forever and " batman and robin" moved from the darkness...into comedy...

Dark Knight to storm the box office
Ledger's last film expected to be a classic

Heath Ledger's last film "The Dark Knight" is shaping up to be the biggest film in box office history as fans eagerly await its Friday night opening.

"The Dark Knight," had around 3,000 late-night showings, including almost 100 showings at 3 and 6 a.m. Friday, according to Fandango.com spokesman Harry Medved.

Medved said he couldn't remember the last time there were more than two or three such showings in the middle of the night -- usually in New York or Los Angeles.

"Isn't that when people are just thinking about waking up and going to Starbucks?" Medved said Thursday. "I predict coffee sales will increase tomorrow."

Theaters reported sellouts all over the country, and excited fans were energized by the opening. Enthusiasts showed up in groups, some dressed head to toe in their Batman gear to celebrate the movie's release.

One group attending a showing at the 428-seat Henry Ford IMAX Theatre outside Detroit, Michigan, drove to the venue in their version of the Batmobile and outfits representing nearly every major Batman character. The midnight show -- with a costume party preceding it -- sold out in less than a week, according to the Detroit Free Press.

With a running time of two and a half hours, Medved is declaring "The Dark Knight's" opening day "Dark Friday," predicting attendance at work could be dramatically down.

During a survey given to people who buy tickets through Fandango.com, 38 percent of those who are working said they would be taking either some time or the day off to see the movie.

According to MovieTickets.com, "Dark Knight" sold out more than 150 performances in Los Angeles and New York alone.

The midnight show times were not just for major movie centers, either. Medved said cities such as Fresno, California; Orlando, Florida; and towns in Minnesota were scheduled to host early-morning showings.

"The Dark Knight" already has risen to second place on Fandango.com's all-time list of advance tickets sales, second only to "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith." "The Dark Knight" tickets represent 94 percent of Fandango's sales, Medved said.

Interest is high at IMAX theaters, too, especially because six film sequences were shot with IMAX cameras.

And it's not just the movie business that's looking to cash in on the blockbuster. Corporate America hopes to capitalize on the hype, too, with Dominos offering a "Gotham City" pizza, and Comcast showing behind-the-scenes movie footage and interviews with the cast and filmmakers via their On Demand service.

The film also is earning Oscar buzz, thanks to the late Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker.

Moviegoers purchasing tickets on Fandango.com echoed those sentiments, with 53 percent saying his performance was their main motivation for seeing the film.

Ledger's performance has been hailed as "indelible" (Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan), "powerful" (The Washington Post's Stephen Hunter, in an overall mixed review) and "mesmerizing" (CNN.com's Tom Charity); clips of his character have dominated the movie's marketing campaign.

His absence was conspicuous Monday at the New York premiere, his co-stars noted.

"He should be here, shouldn't he? Because this is his big moment -- because he is the most amazing thing in the picture," said Michael Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred. "And it's not because he's dead or something and everyone's concentrating on him. He would have been the most amazing thing in the picture anyway."

Caine also praised the late actor's commitment to immersing himself in a character, something he says is evident from Ledger's opening monologue.

"It's one of the finest close-ups I've ever seen," Caine said.

Aaron Eckhart, who plays Dent, said it was tragic that Ledger wasn't around to celebrate his achievement.

"It's hard to talk about; this is his. He created the Joker," Eckhart said. "He did it in his own way, and it's sad, but on the other hand, I am proud to be able to honor him tonight."

saw it last night and it absolutely blew my mind. i was looking forward to it to be sure, but it was far better than i expected.

you know how when you watch the 1989 batman and think about how badass it would be without all the camp and silliness, and if they cranked up the insanity and darker aspects up to 11? that's dark knight.

It'd be cool for them to film the "Dark Knight Returns..." where Batman returns to action at age 55 and must fight Superman, and actually beats him, as seen in Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same

The movies itself was unique in that it was much more realistic than other superhero flicks. The action itself didn't look CGI, but REAL

Heath Ledger's joker is probably the scariest villain I've ever seen. The character felt almost real to me lol that's the only way I can even decribe his performance

I'm going to go further than the critics and say that Ledger's performance was the best I've ever seen since Brando's incarnation of Don Corleone in "The Godfather". It is that good. The only problem with giving him the Oscar is that the naysayers will claim that they are giving it to him only because he died, because they feel sorry for him. Of course, this is outrageous.

I told you Moose.

They hit a homerun by not making a kiddie flick with all CGI and cheesy storylines. Instead they had good acting coupled with very real stunts and a realistic storyline.

One thing they did to make the film more realistic was by having the Joker be more of an urban terrorist than a criminal. Ledger's Joker = one of the best villains ever.

Probably, but they ought to give it to him despite what idiots say or might say. You have Oscars going out to actors that act in movies that the general public does not care about. This time around you have an excellent performance in a mainstream film. Giving it to Ledger would restore some credibility to the Oscars

Incredibly awesome movie.  Probably the best superhero movie ever imo.  Ledger was absolutely ridiculous as the Joker 8)

I told you Moose.

that you did

I just saw it

great movie...best movie i've seen this year.  But Ledger really stole the show.  Its #1 on IMDB's top 250...knocking off Godfather, which I think is bullshit.

Stupid fanboys who think this movie was greater than Godfather and Pulp Fiction.  Great movie none the less, Christopher Nolan will probably be Hollywoods next big director.

I just got back from seeing it....

I was one of the many skeptics who assumed it was a lot of dicksucking just because of ledger's passing, but after seeing it for myself, I was blown away.  best movie I have seen in a long time.... the joker character completely stole the spotlight... while bale is a good actor, the terrible voiceover of him when in batman character and the joker portrayal  pretty much muted his performance, almost making him a footnote.

I will definitely go see it again, it was long but did not seem drawn out.  overall pretty fuckin awesome in my book.

I just saw it and agree with you 100%.  The stupid voiceover of him at the end with the joker hanging is retarded.  The joker was awesome.  One thing I also noticed is that Christian Bale lost a lot of muscle from the first one.  You see him take off his shirt to show off some bruises at the beginning and he is basically normal sized.

Well, Stavios, as the owner of EVERY Amazing Spiderman comic, from #1 to #300(at which time I stopped collecting), The SM mnovies are actually SUPERB in capturing, to trhe letter, the essence of the comics. Except for the web shooters, which, in the mags, are made by pp and the webs do not come out of his arms, everything is true to the letter.

I can't say that about BM, never collected DC.

I think the main reason why I hate the spiderman movies is because of Kristen Dunst.
I don't know why, but it pissed me off everytime she was on the screen.

Not everything is the same as in the comics...What I  didnt agree with for the Spider-man movies was how they killed off all the major Villians! Venom, Green Goblin...they freakin killed Harry off!

In the comics, Harry is supposed to be Peter's best friend who eventually get married and has a kid and has amnesia that he is the Green Goblin.  In the comic, the Green Goblin came to be when he drank some sort of potion, it wasnt supposed to be scitzo personalities! It was the Green Goblin potion that was responsible for the Greeen Goblin persona and the super strength.

In the Comics, Mary Jane is also an actress but she was also a famous model.

I was very pissed off that they killed off the major villians jsut like the X-men movie killed off Jean Grey, Cyclops, ect....

It just pisses me off that the movies somewhat ruin comic book continuity.

But you knew it had to happen though right?

When I heard Harvey Dent was one of the characters, I knew that Tw-Face was going tobe in the film.

Remember the first Bat-Man movie with Michael Keaton? Harvey Dent was played by that black actor who played Lando Calrisean in the Star Wars movies then Later played by Tommy Lee Jones in the following Bat-Man sequel who played Two-Face?

The pople that made the First Bat-Man movie probably didnt know that Harvey Dent would eventually become Two-Face when they Gave a black man the role as Harvey Dent

Yeah that pissed me off!!

Venom wasnt supposed to die. He plays an intrical part in the Spider-Man comic.

He eventually becomes a vigilante bringing his own brand of justice just like the Punisher! Venom actually become a good guy who kills people. Becomes the anti Spider-Man. (Venom-Lethal Protector).

Now only that but Venom actually spawns "childern" that include Carnage and a female symbiote.

The person who wrote the story for the movies should be shot!! He didnt know what the hell he was doing andf ruined comic book continuity. He ruinedit for the true comic book fans

yep, and while we are on it. Why not show Galactus in FF2?

Please dont get me started!

That movie pissed me off! Remember the scene where the Surfer falls off his board and they shoot him with rays to make him weak? The way that movie played out was that if the Surfer was separated from his board he was powerless! Not true!!!

The Silver Surfer was powerful with or ithout his board in the comic book. He could actually will his board to come to him whenever he wanted it to.

So the part of when he was being torured and feeling pain isnt supposed to be true because the Surfer is made out of some sort of metal.

The movie makers made the Silver Surfer out to be a weakling when in fact he is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

We comic book fans no that there is no way in hell the Surfer can destroy galactus but the movie writer who wrtote the film made it out that way...bullshit!

That was Billy Dee Williams, and he took the role with the expectation that he would be brought back to play Two-Face. Williams reportedly even had a clause added to his contract reserving the role for him.

During casting for Batman Forever (1995) Warner Bros. decided they would prefer Tommy Lee Jones and bought out Williams' contract for a pretty hefty chunk of change.

Its not fair to compare because 89 stands absolutely zero chance. Nothing about it touches Dark Knight in anyway.

And they are two different franchises.
The Dark Knight is not a remake or rehashing of 1989’s.

Tim Burton’s films were dark and sinister, but still had that comic book feel. The Joker falls into toxic chemicals, "disfiguring" his face into a perfectly symmetrical smile. And his weapons, while deadly, looked and functioned like cheesy props – like the boutonniere that squirted acid.
No problem, though. Burton pulled off what he set out to accomplish, and it was a great movie.

Nolan is telling a different story. His Joker is not an evil clown, but a deranged, psychopathic terrorist who just crudely slapped some clown makeup on more as a form of war paint. No special weapons or purple suits. The character – as well as the entire movie – seems more realistic.

from what I've read the Joker in The Dark Knight is how the original joker was written before the censors started with comics in the 40's.

What’s funny is I just talked with my Uncle earlier today. He’s 67 and hasn’t seen any of the Batman films since the campy 1960’s Adam West series.

He told me that when he was a kid he loved the Batman adventures they played at the movie theaters before the features.
Back then, Batman simply carried a pistol – no fancy cars or weapons.
He said the Joker wasn’t even around yet, and the shows simply featured regular gangster type villains.

I actually saw part of something like this on AMC years ago. Talk about old school. I think this was from the school that burned down before the old school was even built. But it did have Vicky Vale, who would later appear in 1989’s mega-hit.

What did you uncle think about the 'The Dark Knight?'

He hasn’t seen it yet, but I think I convinced him to at least give it a chance.
He seemed pretty interested when I told him there was no cartoonish bullshit like in the previous franchises. He stopped watching back when they gave Adam West the suit.

He always liked the more realistic, “regular” city and villains from the old B&W series.
Interesting that that’s almost the same formula they’re now using to great success once again.

It's not the bruce wayne puts on the batman costume it's that Batman puts on the "bruce wayne costume".
Stems from the comics.... batman was always, since 30's the best ever superhero, everyone else had super powers, spidey, supes, hulk.... not bats.
The greatest cast of villians ever assembled in story.....  with each villian having some of the sam attributes of bats himself..... greatest comics ev..... knightfall the best series ev.... novel ev.... batman rocks  ;D nutshell ;)

Not a comic book movie fan? Sometimes the adaptation of the comic book doesn't not translate to the big screen. I think this movie goes beyond that. It seemed like more of a real story that goes beyond the comic book.

Your opinion is the first I've read that didn't think the movie was excellent. Ledger will be nominated for the Oscar but I don't think he will win.

His performance was superb, though. No denying that.

i liked the first spider man and all the batman movies, except batman and robin

i didn't like iron man, incredible hulk, or x men so I wouldn't say i'm a big fan

the dark knight was a good movie, probably the best batman but it didn't meet the hype imo

ledger was good but i don't think he was any better then two face, who is a much scarier and more interesting villain if you ask me

they say playing the joker is one of the main reasons he was on so much medication, maybe people think his performance is oscar worthy because they don't want to think he died for nothing

no matter what ends up happening, he definitely died for nothing, regardless.

Such a talented actor too. He did get extremely deep into his Joker character. He was definitely a method actor to an extreme from what I've read. He was having sleepless nights and hooked on medication like you said because of this role. I find it to be a cop-out to abuse drugs, if you ask me. I heard he was quite the partyer in his day. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

Too bad, he will be missed.

Saw it last nite, midnight showing, Simply put........ OUTSTANDING!!!!!!! Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker blows Jack Nicolson's out the water. Great story theme, Best Batman movie thus far!!!!!

I had really high hopes for this movie due to all the positive reviews and such, so maybe that was the problem. I was disappointed. It was at least an hour too long, the action scenes were boring, there were no new cool gadgets, etc, .and generally nothing special.

What was up with the ridiculous voice Bale put on when being Batman? I don’t recall him doing that in Batman Begins, which I actually enjoyed far more. That voice he put on didn’t work at all.

Two, the leading lady was not very attractive. In fact, kinda fugly. The richest and best looking guy in town, and the Mr hunk blond DA can’t do better then that???!! Here she is for those who didn’t see the movie:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/celebritynews/2447565/Gyllenhaals-struggle.html

Ledger pretty much made the movie. In fact, for me, the only thing that kept this movie from being a total dog, was the collection of great actors that made the human element work at least, such as Ledger and Gary Oldman and othes. Other then that, I was very disappointed. The movie's attempts at exploring the nature of human behavior and morality and such was all well and fine, but I don't go to Batman movies to explore human morality...

I was with 4 people, and we all had the same response to the movie, so I knew it was not just me being ultra hard on the movie (which I am in general) and we all had the same “this is what got such great reviews?” comments on the way out. My review is, wait ‘till it hits video…

From Perez Hilton

It keeps getting better and better for Warner Bros, though the same can't be said for Christian Bale.

The Dark Knight took in $24.M on Monday.

And, now we have yesterday's earnings!

The film made an addition $20.8M on Tuesday. Most movie's debut to that number (or less) on a Friday!

The Dark Knight's domestic earnings currently stand at $203.7 million, in less than one week of release.

It's the first flick to cross the $200 million mark in 5 days.

Saw it a few days ago.

Solid movie, very well directed and beautiful plot and story.

The lack of CGI was great too.

The character of the Joker was written well and delivered by Heath extremely good.

I think he'll get a nomination.

But i agree with Earl, probably not good enough for an oscar.  but you never know.  Maybe the rest of the year nothing else is up to that level.

Maggie G.  was the only weak spot IMO.  She doesn't do well if the role isn't good for her and she's didn't give an air of defiance that Katie Holmes gave to the character.

But again, not much i can say.  9/10 or better but not a 10.

It's my favorite classic comic book movie however.

I just saw it, only released yesterday in this part of the world.
I liked it BUT yes it was a bit long and the lead lady was pretty normal as far as standards go.
Still good entertainment though I give it a 8

THE MOVIE IS FUCKING INCREDIBLE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Heath Ledger was a fucking psycho to be able to play the joker that well.
it was fucking crazy  :o :o :o

He certainly tapped into a dark side to himself. No wonder he was so disturbed after his performance.  :'(
That's a side of acting most people aren't aware of, ...you don't always get to leave the job on the set.

I saw a screener of it a while back. Absolutely fabulous film. They did an excellent job and Heath's performance was simply amazing. He definitely deserves an Oscar nomination for it. Whether he'll win, we can't say. There may be others eligible and perhaps more deserving of the accolade, despite Heath's ...matrydom, for want of a better word.

If he is nominated though, ...I hope it doesn't get political. It's no secret the Dark Knight is merely a propaganda tool to help redeem the Bush admin, neverless Heath Ledger did an amazing job and should be voted for or not, ...based solely on his execution of the character rather than the propaganda behind the film.

Christian Bale may have been the title character, but Heath definitely stole the show.

I wonder if they will make a prequel, that tells the audience how the Joker actually came to be?

Martyrdom? That is quite possibly the most euphemistic description I’ve heard to date. ;D

I hope they don’t continue the character – even in the context of a prequel. If they do, I really think the fans would fart on it. #1 To many folks it would seem a bit disrespectful to cast another actor in the role, and #2 Heath did such a fantastic job, I don’t know if fans would accept someone else playing the part.

Right at the end of the movie when commissioner Gordon is talking to his son:

"Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a dark knight"

Dam that shit made my cock hard! Best part of the whole movie for me.

Yes, when the Morgan Freeman character built Batman a suit to resist dog bites he said something about it protecting him from cats as well.

That's the whole idea, ...don't think, ...just go on auto-pilot and let it all sink in.

Are you saying you missed the parallels between the warrantless wiretaps and the sonar triangulation of cell phones? It was so blatantly obvious? Then the whitewashing & coverup of Dent's role? oh puleaze! It was sooooo in your face. the secrecy... the deception... the lies... HELLO!  ;D

That didn't stop George Lucas from making Christiansen the new Skywalker.

They said the same thing about Nicholson's joker as well. Now fans are embracing Heath,
...as they will one day embrace another. Don't forget, ...fans can be notoriously fickle.

Police in the town of Three Rivers, Michigan think they've caught a joker in the act of committing a crime on a dark night.

It happened Monday when cops in the city near the Indiana border were called to a local movie theatre. Officials there told them someone was trying to steal posters and other items related to the new Batman movie - and that the culprit was clad in make-up to make him appear like the Joker, the character played in the film by the late Heath Ledger.

Incredulous cops arrived to find a man with white make-up on his face, a green wig on his head and wearing a purple suit, being restrained by employees who were holding him for police.

A 20-year-old named Spencer Taylor (top left, shown in and out of his alleged disguise in a police photo) is being held for larceny and malicious destruction of property. He'll be in court next week.

"The Dark Knight," the latest and some say the best of the Batman films, is well on its way to becoming the most successful motion picture of all time at the box office. It has already attracted a rabid fan base and collectors may be expecting to reap a small fortune from anything related to it - provided they come by it all honestly.
