As far as I'm concerned, the current pro's have overdeveloped legs legs. Branch is a perfect example. Huge, stupid looking legs. Arnold was perfection

Correct.
Arnold's legs were huge, it's just that for some reason the standard went from huge, striated legs to obscenely huge, blocky, inhuman legs. If the standard in the 70's was to have obscenely huge legs, Arnolds would have been the hugest and the most obscene. I'm glad that was not the standard in the 70's though. Arnold looks like a God.

It is really hard to believe that he improved his calves so dramatically after 1969, being an ectomorf with very weak calves despite years of training. But they certainy don't look like implants, those weren't even possible back then.

Calf muscles tend to stay, even without (much) training and going off the juice. Maybe it has to do with stretching or hyperplasia. I think this is only the case with calves...

yup, my quads are non existant, yet my calves are still 19" . maybe an inch off their biggest.

You would think so, until you have the problem yourself. Sure, they might grow a little but after years of hammering them with everything you have but its very demotivating. 1000lb calf raises for 3 years with Reg + good german genetics=big calves

You would think so, until you have the problem yourself. Sure, they might grow a little but after years of hammering them with everything you have but its very demotivating. i actually thought i was missing calves genetically when i started training. but i didnt ignore them thinking there was no point training them. there were many days i literally could not walk. now, 30 years later they are always a pretty good size. i trained them in a way i have still never heard anyone talking about.

Any tips Hazbin? My background doesnt make calves an easy growing muscle, seated raises are what has given me whatever growth I achieved.
What I do know is that super heavy standing raises dont work for everyone, and I took Arnolds calf training advice years ago and wasted a ton of time going way too heavy and not stretching and contracting them enough.

Everytime I watch the movie Twins his calves seems to keep growing.
He was in great shape for that particular Julius Benedic role,

I'm not saying Arnold used it, but PMMA has been around for a long long time. And is used in more things then you can think of. From dentures, to white cavity fillings, to glass, to airplanes and implants. Arnold was Weiders science experiment. And Arnold looked for every shortcut imaginable in all aspects of his life. Weiders wife most likely knew all about different kinds of implants and for sure would have known how PMMA was being used for female implants.

I remember Arnold saying that he first started training calves seriously when he met Reg Park.
He claimed Reg Park would load the calf machine with 800-1000lbs and do sets while before Arnold would only do half of that weight.

I'd like to see a photo of any of these calf machines with 1000 lbs. That sounds like BS to me. Those machines cannot hold that much weight.

arnold thighs were a bit slim even so cut up . so calves gave him the legs . like vince basile said his calf improvment is a big spectacular sucess . . who elese got improvment like this on his calves in four years . or things that remain hidden . that he did .

Arnold had good calves (not great) but it was a lagging part that he worked hard to bring up. You don't get those striations and muscle quality with implants. Agree, many pros in the 70s/early 80s had perfect sized legs. The pros now have a miserable time doing anything athletic because many of them carry too much leg muscle, which kills any functionality...shit they can't even walk right.

From the photos in this thread, it is clear that Arnold has been doing calf raises using Adobe Photoshop. It provides a full extension & pump.

Such a lack of the soleus (width)muscle from the back. It's as if the soleus muscle didn't spread at all while the upper calf blow up.

Arnold didn't have huge legs, but I love the seperation and the size of his legs. Now, I know all Getbiggers have 35" shredded cathedral pillars on their lower halves, but to rest of the world Arnold's legs were huge.....and of course it's the validation of total strangers we're all after.

. It all started with Dorian, with Haney retired the so called Iron Age era ended and guys like Benfatto,Gaspary,Paris,Labrada thought they had a chance ....but things took a wild turn for the worse.

Agree hipolito. I totally admire Dorian for his work ethic and workman, hard, non-flamboyant training style but BBing in general was at its best in Lee Haney's time, the direction of mass over shape started with Dorian and got worse afterward. Back in the iron age, they didn't accept distended guts and organ growth.

hard work. most people decide that calves can't change - that they are completely genetic, so they don't train them at all.
Robbi Robinson had horrible calves throughout his career, but when he focused on them in1979 he still added an inch to them. so a black guy with bad calf genetics can add an inch in a year. what can a guy with good insertions and genetic predisposition do if he focuses on calves harder than any other group??

Calves don't disappear. Mine are still over 17 " cold with absolutely no calf training. Arnold's calves have atrophied quite a lot. A mystery!

In addition to Schwarzenegger, Eric Fankhouser and other bbs with extreme calf development have similar natural muscle formation "lumps" which appear more prominently on the inner head of the gastrocnemius in that particular calf pose.

Thanks for that photo. Who knows what Arnold did? He sure changed his physique and condition after living in LA for a couple of years. Must be the west coast climate!

Those calves (1988) as they were that year, were better calves than 81 Franco's 83 Sammir 84to 91 Haney's, 98-2005 Ronnie's Dexter 08 and Philsulin....
......only Yates and Cutler had super calves in the same field as Arnold...is crazy when you consider that Arnols wad retired for 8 years.

it's like dorian. his first two pro shows, he got beat by guys with better backs. he didn't run to Tijuana and buy a fake back . he went to the gym and BUILT the best back ever.

Im not doubting Arnold, but I can be HONEST about Robbie, he told me first hand how he improved his calves with site injects, small amounts of oil prior to training and stretching them, there was three sites per calf to even it out, they were then stretched slowly and trained lightly and slowly, its a protocol that helped improve a lot of mainly black calves over the years, Im pretty sure brought in by Charles, you still trained them a few times a week and shot them at least twice, small needles long insulin type, some of the lumps we see are genetic, but some aren't, Arnold was rumoured to have put Primo there years ago, but his didn't have the fascia damage of others but he did have that lump, I prefer not to believe, Nasser shot his calves to a similar formula and they remained decent unlike Flex Ronnies, but its a protocol that was well established and used by guys who didn't have the cells in their calves, I was surprised Nasser did as his calves looked genetic, but I think he got away with it in comparison to flex and Ronnie due to the shape.

Im not doubting Arnold, but I can be HONEST about Robbie, he told me first hand how he improved his calves with site injects, small amounts of oil prior to training and stretching them, there was three sites per calf to even it out, they were then stretched slowly and trained lightly and slowly, its a protocol that helped improve a lot of mainly black calves over the years, Im pretty sure brought in by Charles, you still trained them a few times a week and shot them at least twice, small needles long insulin type, some of the lumps we see are genetic, but some aren't, Arnold was rumoured to have put Primo there years ago, but his didn't have the fascia damage of others but he did have that lump, I prefer not to believe, Nasser shot his calves to a similar formula and they remained decent unlike Flex Ronnies, but its a protocol that was well established and used by guys who didn't have the cells in their calves, I was surprised Nasser did as his calves looked genetic, but I think he got away with it in comparison to flex and Ronnie due to the shape.
wow. never would have guessed that. I never even considered injecting my calves. I guess that's why five years later they still measure almost 20 inches.

I just take offence to people accusing Arnold of having fake calves. watch 'Twins'. his calves danced and split like fooken crazy.
how could Arnold get implants in Tijuana in the 60's or 70's that good when guys today look like idiots when they fake their calves????

Just look at the pic of arnold and patrick biking together and see if their calves were overlaid on each other they are identical. Implants cant give the diamond shape and development. His calves never changed shape just got alot bigger

They have overdeveloped thighs. Many of them have underdeveloped legs in regards to the calf portion of their legs.

like the others said...probably didnt even train them at all, or barely...prior to meeting park.
then trained them like, or harder, than he had been doing for arms and chest etc... bam!... big like the rest of him.

sometimes its just the truth. no one who has faked something would bring so much attention to the achievement...and he made a big deal out of bringing his calves up.

I was at Golds Gym in October 1968 when Arnold arrived. I got to measure his arms one day and they were 21 1/2 inches. That day he wouldn't let me measure his calves and told me to come back in two weeks. I always wondered what was supposed to happen in just two weeks.
He is the only bodybuilder from those days who had huge calves from the side. Except he had an unusual lump on the inside. You can see it from the back as well. What the heck is that? If you compare his calves at their biggest with the guys today who have huge calves his seem odd. So we know what huge calves look like and Arnold's look weird.
There were accusations that Arnold cheated and got help from doctors. Joe Gold claimed he knew the truth but wasn't telling.
Calves don't disappear. Mine are still over 17 " cold with absolutely no calf training. Arnold's calves have atrophied quite a lot. A mystery!
