this is the biggest travesty in years, this man did nothing except keep law and order in his country and he's sentenced to hang, he was ousted under false evidence.

Well, it is interesting that many are starting to point out that the country was better off with Saddam... Bill Maher pointed it out a couple weeks ago.
-
Everyone knows what happened.
Iraq did about 10% of the terrible shit North Korea has done.
Iraq - rumored to have WMD, ended up with 500 expired shells from 1985 in a bunker. Let UN search his country, and they found nothing.
N. Korea - fires test missile directly at Hawaii on the 4th of July, blows up a nuke underground, tells the world they will destroy the US.
Which country is a greater threat here?
-
I'll get over the technical "injustices". Would've liked to have seen him in court with a ball in his mouth.
Abu Ghraib his ass first though. 3-6 months left. Include some waterboarding.
-
Hitler kept law and order in Germany, boosted the economy etc...
The man needed taking down, simple.
-
What a sad thread.....you guys actually thought he should have lived. Sarcasm is just a flat out sympathizer and would expect nothing less!

That's dumb... He got taken down for everything he was doing outside his country. I hate to say it, but I'd bet nothing would have happened to hitler had he just exterminated jews his Germany. I don't support that idea at all but I bet that would have been the unfortunate reality. Hitler didn't get taken down for what he was doing in Germany.

correct. We could care less about what he was doing, until his ally Japan started eyeing Hawaii.

You are a Christian.
Do you support the death sentencing of Saddam? :o

Hard to say, will never know. Less likely they would've intervened, it's sadly true-might've been more like Stalin's scenarios that only came out much later.

everyone knoew death was the eventuality, my my bro saddam aint going out like no bitch
long live sectarian violence !

*APPLAUSE* The wheels of justice churn slowly, but they finally caught up with Saddam.

anyone who takes over a country full of barabric muslims is gonna have to run it in a brutal fashion, thats the nature of a backassed country
saddam wasnt such a bad guy back when he was gassing people with FUCKING US GAS, or shaking hands with donald rumsfeld
the trial was a fucking joke without several members of the regan era US govn't going to the gallows as well

How can you support the death penalty, if you're a Christian?
He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her...

??? The Bible doesn't support the death penalty? News to me. I believe in due process, justice, accountability, and punishment, all of which are consistent with Christianity and Sadaam's trial.

man who cares what he did or didnt do? IMO he is just another Iraqi dead, and that is a good thing
-
Torture over the next 10 years would be a much better solution.
-
What I don't understand is how anyone could think his trial fair, when his lawyers had been expelled from much of it. We all knew what the verdict was going to be. Everything else in between his capture to now, was simply theatre. :-\

agreed. we should just put him in an underground cell with no light with 20 other people like he did to thousands

Agreed but practically speaking in that context, with overwhelming evidence no one seems to concerned. No one wants a 10-year long Melosovic trial or more Hussein nonsense.

since the rise of responsible government pretense before a war is a probabality since nobody has the balls to say they support fighting for the real reasons
-
You're afraid.
Of?
-
Of?
You're afraid of a few things.
You're scared of the govt. You're scared to seriously consider how hijacked planes flew for 90 minutes without being intercepted. You're scared to seriously look at building 7 and say "why did this building turn into pulverized concrete in 7 seconds?
most of all, you're scared of this shitty house of cards falling. You are part of the 16% of Americans who still believe every word bush says about 9/11. Since that number has fallen from 99% to 16% in 5 years, you really have to wonder why...
But you don't. You're scared shitless, dude. You look in the mirror and you see a guy who nods nervously at the boss and tells him how nice his tie is. You see a guy who will goofily sing the twilight zone theme when you see a 47-story building fall for no reason. You see a guy who is an American but certainly not a patriot by any means.

I don't really have a boss, and the president of my company does not wear a tie. Ever. :) People rarely wear ties in my office. We wear aloha shirts pretty much every day. Except for casual Fridays. But I do have about 20 or so ties in my collection . . . .

Do you have a taste for cubans like your boy Saddam?
What you said is true, you gotta be brutal and keep order in a country like Iraq. Saddam wasn't much of a criminal in the eyes of Americans and the west until he decided to against America's oil interests in Kuwait.

he would be dead already if he wasnt under protection in jail

No. And I feel really bad for you. I can imagine you'd be the type, in 1940 Germany, to laugh at your neighbors as they were shipped off to camps because "hell, it's them, not me!"
Nah. I'd be the one signing up to serve my country, like you did . . . . no . . . wait . . . . you haven't served a day on active duty. It's not too late. Go sign up. Your country needs you.

Ben Franklin never served in the military.
Would you say he's not a patriot either?
-
yea sign up for the military to get killed so that "Iraq can become a democracy" Or maybe get killed by your own people then have it covered up by the government, so you can be a 'patriot'. Sounds great
Kerry is right. You do have a to be an idiot nowadays to serve in the military.
-
Ben Franklin never served in the military.

Ben Franklin was a patriot, but what does that have to do with you and your lack of military service? Are you comparing yourself to Ben Franklin?? ?? ??
-
Nope. But you mocked the fact that I have not served. Military service is a great thing, but by no means the only measurement of the ways a person can serve his country.
-
I agree.
And when have I ever mocked you? You're making it sound like I'm constantly referencing the CIA or the Twilight Zone or something. . . . ;D

Some people think all murder is wrong, even state-sanctioned. Courts of law are supposed to mete out justice, not revenge.
-
White House press secretary Tony Snow, with the president in Texas, said the verdict is evidence Iraq is creating an independent judiciary. He said it was "absolutely crazy" to think that the verdict was timed to coincide with the elections.
-
What I don't understand is how anyone could think his trial fair, when his lawyers had been expelled from much of it. We all knew what the verdict was going to be. Everything else in between his capture to now, was simply theatre. :-\
To be honest Jag Saddam was up there with Stalin, Hitler, Chairman Mao. All the famous mass executioners in history. I don't think too much testimony was needed to know Saddam killed many, many people in cold blood.
-

More of a Stalin wannabe who had plenty of books on Joe. Never came close to the same scale.

Yeah, no doubt the guy was a sadistic dictator who murdered many. But what's alarming here is that the US was buddies with this sick fuck not so long ago.
I dunno why he even got a trail, he should have been shot to death.

Deedee, did you read his post? Here it is- "this is the biggest travesty in years, this man did nothing except keep law and order in his country and he's sentenced to hang, he was ousted under false evidence." Sarcasm never states anything about being against state sanctioned murder. Can't you hear the sarcasm in his tone? I can. Anyway he was tried in Iraq by Iraqis under Iraq law. Its their business whether they hang him, fry him, torture him etc... They meted out their own justice Iraqi style.
-
More of a Stalin wannabe who had plenty of books on Joe. Never came close to the same scale.
True. Uncle Joe killed millions of his own countryman.

exactly right.

The only reason we were buddies with him at the time- 1980 till 1990 was because Iran under Ayatolla Khomeini was our primary enemy and Saddam was enemies with him also.
-

I hear a little sarcasm in his tone, but seem to remember him saying he was against the death penalty elsewhere. The fact is though, Saddam kept an unruly bunch of people from boiling over for a long time. But you're right... he's getting justice Iraqi style. Live by the sword, die by the sword, I guess.
I just always get a little chill when I hear westernized people talking about "frying" people etc.
-

Deedee, I think when we talk about frying people its done tongue in cheek. Capitol punishment is a tough, tough issue. You can be for it or morally against it. I know when I watch shows like court TV and someone who has raped or murdered or molested numerous times gets the death penalty and it gives the victims family closure many times that they would not have. It also is for the victims.
-
Not to get too far off topic, but of course, families of victims, and victims themselves, are entitled to feel murderous indignation. But that's why we have the courts who are supposed to administer justice with cold blindness. Otherwise we'd be barbarians and vigilantes. I can't help but look at Saddam's mug on the news and think what they're doing to him is no better than what he did.
-

You are feeling sorry for him because he looks like a pathetic old man. Remember that he is responsible for hundreds of thousands dead in Iran, Kuwait and his own country.

Lol, well I am a bit of a softie, and he does look like a pathetic old man without the beret and uniform. BUT, I do remember the video clip I saw years ago, where he personally read out the names of people in his parliament (or their version of it) who were summarily taken out to be hanged or beheaded within the week... and remember seeing the looks of fear and realization in their faces, so no, I don't have much pity for him. But then when you see the news clips of people dancing in the street who also look like uneducated, well, barbarians, you can see what kind of a job he must have had, keeping these people in check. It's not like atrocities haven't been committed ad nauseum elsewhere in the last decade. I guess it is just a question of personal morality. I'm just against killing in general... including state sanctioned. :-\

Deedee, I saw that clip too. Some men begged and sobbed for their lives. That part of the world seems to be a dog eat dog. That part of the world is literally still in the eight century. Saddam and his sons, their henchmen and cronies were muderous, cold blooded men. Saddam killed his own son in laws.

What an elitist post lol
All people of poverty from third world countries protest on the street, it doesn't make them barbarians. Sure they're uneducated, but you speak as though those people don't have any good in them and that's not a fair thing to say. Judging from your hippy stance on capital punishment, I find the above post surprising.

Lol, sorry, don't mean to sound elitist. Perhaps barbarians was a little strong, but I couldn't come up with an adequate word, although you can't totally deny that the taking to the streets in recent years, has often resulted in barbaric acts. Don't mean to say they have no good in them either. I pity any society that is prisoner to religion or culture.

In about 2 seconds, then I would have started over by just dropping one nuke on Bagdad from day one and endured a few months of international outcry before getting back to normal.

Yes it is.
People will elect pro-war candidates out of office.
To convince people that war is needed, you use fearmongering. let's look at past wars-
WWII - Pearl harbor was allwoed to happen to get US population support. We were STRONG isolational belief population. People wanted no part of that mess.
Vietnam - We staged the gulf of tonkien attack to justify war. 2005 declassified documents show "a slight misunderstanding in middle management caused erroneous report of who actually shot first". You don't go to war for a decade over "small middle mgmt errors"
Egypt 1967 - We had Israel shoot the shit out of one of our boats to try to sink it, the USS Liberty. When it didn't sink and the russians showed up to videotape, the attack ended. men were gagged. But LBJ's transcript calling off assistance, saying "I want that boat at the bottom of the g*ddamn sea" is pretty convincing.
Fake attacks are used to piss people off, or scare them, so that they'll vote for TOUGH politicians (those who want war). however, with all the election rigging we'll see in 2 days, it's a moot point now.
It's all about illusions. Brainwashing the people to let them believe a certain war is appropriate. The people have been brainwashed by their church, their religions, their leaders and other people who call themselves "Elite."
People should learn to think for themselves. People should know the truth, and the truth will set them free.
Otherwise:history repeating.

Tempting but just doing the post-invasion right, getting their existing army retrained and then getting out or back to military bases in Iraq would've worked.

I hear that. We really needed to show we were serious about this war. A nuke would have sent the message. These fuckers like that Sadr guy wouldn't be fucking with us if we did it right.
SHould the US drop a nuke on the capital city of every nation who abuses human rights?

No, the list is fine. It's just your 9/11 theory is wrong and you are married to it and are continueally trying ot pimp it out on threads ;D
Don't sweat it 240 or Bust, you don't seem to be a conspiracy theorist anymore, not as obsessed.
You will still have to deal with the luggage of all those threads you started though.
Shit happens.
Edit: Being obsessed with high standards can never be a bad thing IMO.

99 out of 100 people who watch an hour of documentary on 911 - and see more than their 5-year old memory allows - will realize it was an inside job.
I used to not focus much on the war - after all, it's a volunteer army, and we're attacking bad guys. It's only when I learned about the pattern we have for starting fights with people who have resources we want, that I started to get annoyed. If we want to be a dominant empire, then let's just call it like it is. but it turns my stomach to hear neocon sympathizers saying "WE'RE HELPING THEM!". Cause we're not. We're taking their shit because we want it. That is fact. It's not going to change, but let's at least call it like it is.

Nope just the ones we don't like.

See that would have taken a plan..which I think has been proven nobody had, thus we find ourselves in a pile of quicksand without so much as a vine within reach.

It was huge mistake disbanding their army. An instant 500,000 angry, jobless Sunni Mulsim's.

I think the English speaking nations of the world, the rest of Europe including the old Soviet bloc nations and Russia and Japan should just take over the rest of the world. By force if need be.

Skipped most of the responses, but...
Iraq was better off with Saddam, period.
If Hitler hadn't invaded Russia (and to a lesser extent N. Africa), most of Europe would be speaking German. A lot of people believe FDR let Pearl Harbor happen to bring the US into the war. The American public would have never supported a war with Germany unless the Japanese hadn't attacked. We knew about the holocaust well before engaging the Germans/Japanese.

You are a Christian.
Do you support the death sentencing of Saddam? :o

Fundamental Christian. An eye for an eye and Suddam is guilty of genocide. Ask any surviving Kurd about mustard gas.

We sold Saddam the gas. Are you suggesting our leaders should be on trial as well?
We also trained the Mujahadeen (sp?) in Afghanistan. Abu Ismael, the same assclown who tried blowing up the WTC a long time ago, was trained by us to fight the Russians. Who should be on trial for that?

No. That is Judaism.
Fundamental Christians are "by-the-letter", hence very true to the word of Jesus.
Jesus spoke about "turning the other cheek".
Look, I have no problem understanding why Jews or Muslim are seeking death penalty, as their religions clearly have room for that.
Christianity, on the other hand, I just don't see the support.
Sure, a lot of "Christians" repeatedly tries to interpret the Bible into being pro-capitol punishment, but that's just assaulting the intent of the religion, trying to bend the rules to get away with (literally) murder.

The Bible does not prohibit capital punishment. It isn't inconsistent with Christianity at all IMO.

Actually, the FBI provided the explosives and the truck for the 1993 WTC attacks. There are many recordings that the terrorists made, as they were told the explosives, it was a drill, and they would be paid by the US Govt for their services in helping with this *drill*.
You can google '1993 WTC tape' and listen to them yourself. The FBI helped plan the attack. This isn't a conspiracy or a theory. You can hear it with your own two ears. The tape was even played by cable news for one day, before all mention of it instantly disappeared.
Sadly, some people here will say it's crazy talk to hear a govt will attack/let its people be attacked to serve a political agenda. but it is very much real. Like 9/11 happened nine months into Bush's presidency, WTC1993 happened two months into Clinton's presidency. And with both administrations, it laid down the fear groundwork to justify legislation and govt actions which would be shot down by the people, were they not so damn scared.
Look it up. WTC 1993 tape. Inside job with the tape as the smoking gun.

Trying to fitting capital punishment into a religion where the leader (Jesus) preaches that "He who is without sin shall cast the first stone" (I recommend everyone to read that passage in the Bible)?
A religion that preaches to turn the other cheek, and to give away the cloak to those who tries to take your belongings?
A religion that preaches forgiveness, the very essence of how we ends up in heaven, we are forgiven our sins, because Jesus gave his life for us?
To promote capital punishment is not the Christian way, although you will still go to heaven, as long as you believe in the Lord.

Okay Zack. I see you are trying to play Devil's Advocate. I do that a lot. :)
Casting the first stone has to do with being a hypocrite, not punishing someone for wrongdoing.
You are not required to give your stuff to thieves, and "turning the other check" is clearly a metaphor. Nothing anti-Christian about self-defense.
Forgiveness and punishment are not inconsistent at all. Part of what the Bible teaches is actions have consequences. What you're advocating is anarchy. If you follow your line of thinking, the government should not put anyone in prison, there should be no fines, community service, loss of freedom, etc.

Which country is a greater threat here?
pssst...
you dont go after a country that actaly has the nukes....
cause...umm they might...umm....use em! ;)
i bet saddam is kicking himself in the ass right now..i bet he's thinking..."allah damit...i shoulda used them WMDs while my country ws getting blown to bits"
...maybe he didn't do it fearing negative press eh ::)
lol..as i grow older i've come to expect idiocy from others....

To be honest Jag Saddam was up there with Stalin, Hitler, Chairman Mao. All the famous mass executioners in history. I don't think too much testimony was needed to know Saddam killed many, many people in cold blood.
sooo we r sticking with the iraqi freedom story now...hmm wonder why we didn't do shit about polpot....hmm no oil there maybe?

this is the biggest travesty in years, this man did nothing except keep law and order in his country and he's sentenced to hang, he was ousted under false evidence.
What about the millions of Iraq people that he's killed over the year??? Mass burials? Torture??? Invading neighbouring countries??? All the people that his idiot sons killed??? Dictatorship??? This man is lucky he is only sentenced to death. Its and easy way out for him. He should have been tortured and burned slowly.
