Overrated-underrated: Porter, Warren on opposite ends
Pete Prisco May 31, 2007
By Pete Prisco
CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer
A certain magazine known for a cover jinx put Joey Porter on its cover last year and called him the NFL's meanest man. Agree or disagree its got a little bit of everything for everyone...
This would have been a better description: The NFL's most overrated player.
Porter signed a five-year, $32 million deal with the Miami Dolphins this spring as an unrestricted free agent. The Dolphins think he can be a pass-rush force, adding to an already talented defense.
Many personnel people and coaches I talked to think they're getting something else, which is a player who has more bark than bite.
Porter had seven sacks last season, but six of those came in three games, two in each of those games. That means in the other 11 games he played -- he missed two for injuries -- he had one sack.
"What's even more alarming about that," said an AFC personnel director, "is that he played a 3-4 outside linebacker. Those players are expected to get double-digits sacks at the least."
Porter turned 30 in March, which is even more reason for concern. Add it all up, and it's why he's the pick as my most overrated player in the NFL, which is something I've picked each of the past four years.
This isn't to pile on Porter, who was fined $1,000 this week for his role in a fight with Cincinnati Bengals tackle Levi Jones in a Las Vegas casino. Porter could still face sanctions from the league for that incident.
The flip side of an overrated player is the league's most underrated player.
So who's that lucky player?
It's New England defensive end Ty Warren. In his fourth season in 2006, Warren had 7½ sacks and 84 tackles. It was his breakout season, and one that some said should have landed him in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.
The problem is that Warren plays opposite Richard Seymour, who is one of the best defensive linemen in the league. Seymour gets most of the attention, which is why Warren doesn't.
But keep an eye on Warren this season. He might be ready to join Seymour in Hawaii.
Here are the underrated and overrated players for each of the league's 32 teams.
Arizona Cardinals
Overrated: RB Edgerrin James.
Yes, he played behind a bad line last year when he struggled. But that's not the whole reason for his 3.2 average.
Underrated: LB Gerald Hayes.
Now that Adrian Wilson has finally gone to the Pro Bowl, it's Hayes who gets the slot here. He was a force in the middle as a 4-3 middle linebacker, and should be just as good in the Cardinals' 3-4 defense.
Atlanta Falcons
Overrated: QB Michael Vick.
Until he becomes a better pocket passer, he's always going to be in this spot. It can still happen for him, but it takes work. This is a huge year for him on the field -- if he stays there.
Underrated: DT Grady Jackson.
Say all you want about his weight -- and he sure is big -- but he knows how to clog things up against the run. He does have to get healthy again.
Baltimore Ravens
Overrated: RB Willis McGahee.
Blame the Bills line all you want, but this guy just hasn't performed like a star back.
Underrated: NT Kelly Gregg.
He is a short keg-like body in the middle of the defense who helps keep the linebackers clean to flow to the football. He does the dirty work inside.
Buffalo Bills
Overrated: RT Langston Walker.
It's hard to find one on this young team, but since they paid him money as a free agent he's the pick.
Underrated: LT Jason Peters.
He's close to being a Pro Bowl player. This converted tight end has a ton of potential.
Carolina Panthers
Overrated: MLB Dan Morgan.
The tools are there, but he can't stay on the field. That puts him in this category.
Underrated: QB David Carr.
He will take over as the team's starting quarterback at some point and show the Houston Texans they made a big mistake.
Chicago Bears
Overrated: S Adam Archuleta.
He's never been effective as a cover player. He's basically a glorified linebacker. Watch teams attack him in pass coverage.
Underrated: DT Tank Johnson.
Off-the-field problems aside, Johnson is a heck of a player when he's on the field. The Bears need him in the worst way.
Cincinnati Bengals
Overrated: CB Deltha O'Neal.
He went to the Pro Bowl in 2005, but didn't come close to getting there a year ago. He could be pushed for his starting job now.
Underrated: DE Robert Geathers.
He is a situational pass rusher with speed off the corner. That's why the Bengals made re-signing him a priority.
Cleveland Browns
Overrated: OLB Willie McGinest.
He doesn't have much left and that started to show up last season after the Browns paid him big money as a free agent.
Underrated: S Sean Jones.
He emerged as a top-notch safety last season, showing why the Browns drafted him in the second round in 2004. He had 111 tackles and five interceptions.
Dallas Cowboys
Overrated: QB Tony Romo.
It's way too early to put him as a top 10 quarterback, which some have done. He sure didn't look like it at the end of last season.
Underrated: CB Terence Newman.
His not going to the Pro Bowl last year was a crime. He is a top-notch cover corner.
Denver Broncos
Overrated: DT Gerard Warren.
In fairness to Warren, he played with dislocated toes last season. But he still didn't play like he did in 2005. Of course, John Lynch could fill this spot every year.
Underrated: LG Ben Hamilton.
He has taken over as the team's best offensive lineman. He's a tough, physical player whose best football is still ahead of him.
Detroit Lions
Overrated: G Damien Woody. He hasn't played well since signing with the Lions as a free agent and now he might go to the bench.
Underrated: QB Jon Kitna.
Maybe he's not the long-term answer, but he got the job done last season for Mike Martz. He knows where to go with the football.
Green Bay Packers
Overrated: TE Bubba Franks.
His career has gone down the toilet in a hurry. This former first-round pick is now fighting for a job.
Underrated: DE Cullen Jenkins.
His emergence as a defensive end will allow the Packers to make Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila a situational pass rusher.
Houston Texans
Overrated: RB Ahman Green.
In his last 34 starts, Green has nine rushes of 20 yards or more. In 2003, he had 15 alone. The Texans paid him way too much money at his age.
Underrated: CB Dunta Robinson.
His silky smooth cover skills get lost because the defense has struggled at times.
Indianapolis Colts
Overrated: DT Anthony McFarland.
It was tough finding an overrated player on this team, but McFarland might be it. He did nothing during the regular season, but did show up in the playoffs. Maybe that says something about why he's here.
Underrated: TE Dallas Clark.
His versatility is so key to the Colts offense. He can flex out like a receiver and create match-up problems.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Overrated: DE Paul Spicer.
The team talks up his effort, but what does he really do? He needs to be replaced.
Underrated: DT John Henderson.
For whatever reason, he doesn't get the due he deserves. Maybe it's because he plays next to Marcus Stroud.
Kansas City Chiefs
Overrated: CB Ty Law. He's living off the past. He has slowed down and it shows. Even in the Chiefs' Cover-2 defense, that shows up.
Underrated: DE Jared Allen.
If he can stay clear of off-the-field problems, he will cash in big next year as a free agent.
Miami Dolphins
Overrated: LB Joey Porter.
And it isn't even close. Why they paid him all that money is a great mystery.
Underrated: S Yeremiah Bell.
When he was inserted into the starting lineup in the sixth game last season, the defense became better. He's a good, solid tackler.
Minnesota Vikings
Overrated: LT Bryant McKinnie.
He gives up too many sacks. He's never lived up to the hype as a first-round pick.
Underrated: LB E.J. Henderson.
He had his best season last year and now moves back from the outside to the middle. He struggled as a middle backer earlier in his career, but he's better suited for it now.
New England Patriots
Overrated: LB Tedy Bruschi.
He has slowed down, and that showed up in a big way in the playoff loss to the Colts. He doesn't have it anymore, and is living on his reputation.
Underrated: DE Ty Warren.
Keep a close eye on him. His Pro Bowl time is coming.
New Orleans Saints
Overrated: CB Mike McKenzie.
When he wants to be good, he's good. But he has too many lapses to be an elite player.
Underrated: G Jahri Evans.
As a rookie, he didn't give up a sack. That's high marks for a young lineman.
New York Giants
Overrated: CB Sam Madison.
Once upon a time he was a great man cover corner. You'd never know it now.
Underrated: DT Fred Robbins.
He started all 16 games, getting 62 tackles and 5½ sacks. He's a good, steady player who doesn't get much due.
New York Jets
Overrated: QB Chad Pennington. Can he be a Super Bowl quarterback? I doubt it. He threw 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He's just okay.
Underrated: S Kerry Rhodes.
Much like Adrian Wilson of the Cardinals, his time in the spotlight will eventually come. He's too good a player for that not to happen.
Oakland Raiders
Overrated: RB Dominic Rhodes.
Yes, he had a nice Super Bowl. And he did nicely splitting time with Joseph Addai. But that's all he is, a spot player.
Underrated: CB Nnamdi Asomugha.
This kid has developed into one of the best cover corners in the league. He was a Pro Bowl snub last year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Philadelphia Eagles
Overrated: MLB Jeremiah Trotter.
He doesn't get to the football, and it shows in the run defense. His best days are long behind him.
Underrated: C Jamaal Jackson.
Playing on the best line in the league, he doesn't get the Pro Bowl attention. But it could come this year,
Pittsburgh Steelers
Overrated: G Alan Faneca.
He's a nice run blocker, but he struggles in pass protection. The Steelers will make the wise move not paying him a new deal.
Underrated: DE Brett Keisel.
He always seems to be around the quarterback. This year, the Steelers plan to use some special defenses where he will line up as rover.
St. Louis Rams
Overrated: TE Randy McMichael.
He's OK, but he's not nearly as good as his reputation. Miami wouldn't have let him go if he was.
Underrated: CB Fakhir Brown.
Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett had him in New Orleans and wanted him in St. Louis. Brown is a much better corner than he's given credit for being.
San Diego Chargers
Overrated: QB Philip Rivers.
This being nitpicky because I really like Rivers. But I've seen him ranked as a top five quarterback already. That's a bit quick. He can get there this season, but not yet. There aren't a lot of candidates on the Chargers for this spot.
Underrated: DE Igor Olshansky.
He tends to get overlooked on a line with Jamal Williams and Luis Castillo, but he's right up there with them.
San Francisco 49ers
Overrated: WR Darrell Jackson.
If they think he's going to cure their receiver problems, they are wrong. He's not better than Antonio Bryant, the guy they let go. Jackson drops a lot of passes.
Underrated: LB Brandon Moore.
He had 6½ sacks last year, four games with 10 or more tackles, including the last three, and yet you'd be hard-pressed for people on the East Coast to know his name. He's a heck of a player.
Seattle Seahawks
Overrated: WR Deion Branch.
He's a nice player, but he wasn't worth what the Seahawks traded and paid to get him. Is he really a No. 1 receiver?
Underrated: WR D.J. Hackett.
He got a chance to play last season because of injuries, starting five games, and showed some nice skills. He caught 45 passes and had four touchdown catches, the same as Branch, who started 13 games.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Overrated: QB Jeff Garcia.
He played well for the Eagles last year, but is he really any better than Chris Simms? We'll find out. I doubt it.
Underrated: DE Greg Spires.
He doesn't get the attention Simeon Rice gets, but he is one of those effort guys all defenses need.
Tennessee Titans
Overrated: QB Vince Young (LOVE IT!!!)
Is it crazy to put a second-year player in this spot? Maybe. But he isn't close to being the quarterback some say he is. He can't pass the football consistently yet, but most would make you think otherwise. Give him time.
Underrated: LT Michael Roos.
He isn't Pro Bowl caliber yet, but this young player has a chance to be a nice starting player for a long time.
Washington Redskins
Overrated: WR Antwaan Randle El.
Is he anything more than a good No. 3 receiver? The Redskins paid him way too much money.
Underrated: DT Kedric Golston.
He won a job last year and played well inside as a rookie. He has a chance to develop into a quality defensive tackle. He might never be a Pro Bowl player, but he will be a consistent starter.
-
Not sure why they didn't have room for Charles Woodson - he's easily one of the top-5 most overrated players of this decade.
-
I really don't put much stock into what sports writers deem as "overrated". I don't know how you can be overrated when you've had an established career like the majority of the players mentioned in that article. If you wern't playing at a level worthy of your paycheck, then the player wouldn't be in a position to step onto the field of play.
The bottom line is that if you're good enough to step onto a pro football field, and you're good enough to be actually playing, then you're among the best in the world. Period.
About 95%(if not 100%) of the local beat columnists for every sports town have never even stepped onto a football field, much less a pro level.
I know Earl is going to chime in with his Joey Porter mantra but if he's good enough to start for the Dolphins, then he's probably still good enough to be playing for the Steelers as well. Porter's value goes much more beyond then just sack stastistics. Even though he's been an asshole for much of his career, he's still good enough player to start for all 32 NFL teams. If he was 3 years younger, he'd still be a Steeler. I would have loved to have had him on the Ravens. He would have been a major upgrade over Jared Johnson, their projected starter going into the 2007 season.
-

The only exception I can think of would be former Dallas CB Larry Brown, who actually won a Super Bowl MVP for being in the wrong place at the wrong time...twice.

Well maybe because he was tied for number 1 in interceptions in the NFC....and 3rd in the nfl...not overrated at all
and Samuel from the pats should have been on the underated list because he led the nfl in picks and didnt go to th pro bowl..
and another thing.....Hall from the falcons should have been on the overrated list...dude cant play man on a physical reciever and thats what the nfc is full of

No, he's not. Why is he overrated? Because he's been injured the last two years? What about the years before that? What about when he took the Eagles to the Super Bowl? A place they haven't been since 1980?
Again, why is he overrated? He was blowing up the NFL statistically before he got injured last season.

Let me preface again by saying I am an Eagles fan and a huge one at that....and he is my fantasy QB so I know the stats, but watch him on a game to game basis....he loafs...he doesn't give 100% every play...he has the skills but doesn't put forth the effort...have you forgotten the last drive in the Super Bowl?
-
Dwight Freeney...spins himself out of almost every play. Mostly a non-factor last year. Wants a big contract.

Bro...You have to be kidding me. How does one loaf during a football game during the course of action? The QB is the main target of every play as soon as the ball snaps, while he has the ball. When you have 250 pound linebackers and 300 pound lineman looking to take your head off, who can really move, how would any QB have an opportunity to loaf when the ball is snapped??
As far as the Super Bowl goes...he choked during the pressure and the big lights. Plain and simple. It wasn't the first time it happened and it sure as shit won't be the last.
The success of his offense depends on what Mcnabb puts into every play on every snap. He doesn't loaf, he's not overrated and I would give up my right testicle if he were quarterbacking the Ravens. You just mentioned his stats. How does one loaf and put up stats like that?
You should feel lucky to have him. Who would you prefer? That rookie QB douchebag they drafted out of Houston in the second round?
Please. ::)

If you can still step onto an NFL field, you're not overrated, period.
The powers that be will see that you won't step onto the field if you're not playing up to your contract. The pressure to win in the NFL is enourmous and extremely cut throat.
The worst player you can possibly think of in the NFL is probably better than any athlete you grew up with in high school or college. (at the skill positions, not kickers)
-
Sure. I'd still take him on my team and so would you if given the chance. I'm sure Body88 would agree.
The Pats don't play that syle of defense. He had two good years and Mathis still led his team in sacks. he didn't have a sack last year until more then half way through the season.
-
Freeney gets double teamed on nearly every play. That is why Mathis reaped the benefits for the last two years with one on one blocking.
I'd take him in a heart beat. He's not overrated. If his sack numbers are down, then you know someone else on the line will bring up the rear. He commands that much respect from opposing offenses.
-

YEAH..I AGREE 100%...DUDE IS A FREAK OF NATURE...HE DEMANDS A DOUBLE TEAM...1 ON 1...NO TACKLE CAN BLOCK HIM...AND HE WILL ONLY GET BETTER...I WOULD TAKE HIM IN A SEC..
-
I still can't get over how bad Freeney schooled Ravens' left tackle Jonathen Ogden a couple of years ago. The Ravens decided that Ogden(a future hall of famer) had the goods to block Freeney one on one. Didn't happen. That game was during the 2004 season and was on Sunday night football in front of a national audience. The game signified Freeney's arrival as a dominant force. Since that game, Freeney gets double teamed on ALL passing downs.

That was one bad game..Freeney spins out of a ton of rushes and ends up way past the QB. Overated nad here is his 2006 numbers...a season which was better then 2007 campaign. Let's look at some Cold, Hard Football Facts regarding the so-called elite defensive end. Freeney last year registered a paltry 34 tackles (29 solo, 5 assists). This number is way down behind other Pro Bowl defensive ends such as Strahan (81), Taylor (74) and Umenyiora (70). In fact, of the top 30 sack leaders, Freeney had the lowest number of tackles. In my mind, an upper-echelon end can play the run as well as the pass. From watching Freeney play, twinned with his tackle numbers, you can conclude that Freeney is a liability against the run and always looking to get his hands on the quarterback. But he registered 11 sacks last season and was just ninth in the category. In fact, he trailed his teammate Robert Mathis in both sacks (11.5) and tackles (54).
It gets even worse for Freeney when you look behind the numbers: 8 of his 11 sacks came in six games against Houston, Tennessee, San Francisco and Cleveland. All poor teams with poor offensive lines. He registered three of his 11 sacks in the third game of the season against Cleveland. He had just seven sacks in the final 13 games of the season. Freeney has had the luxury of playing Houston’s porous offensive line twice every year to rack up his sack totals. He has had considerable luck facing Tennessee and Jacksonville's less-than-stout lines also. In 2004, Freeney racked up a career best 16 sacks: 6 of these sacks came in back-to-back games against Houston and Tennessee. He failed to record a sack in 7 of 16 games in 2004. Freeney likes to rack up his sack totals in spurts against weak opposition. A liability against the run and his effectiveness greatly reduced when not facing a revolving door of an offensive lineman, it is my opinion that Dwight Freeney is the most overrated defensive player in the NFL. All this courtesy of the COLD HARD FOOTBALL FACTS.

dude how do you justify manning over brady in the clutch...
-
That's a hard one to call because there are other factors beside pure athletic ability.
For example:
Q: Who would you want leading your team on the final drive for the go ahead touch down?
A: Montana. He won the biggest games. Elway lost in big games.
Q: Who's more athletically gifted, Aikman or Young
A: Young. But Aikman was more consistent as QB.
Q: Who has better ratings and stats Brady or Manning?
A; Manning. But Brady has delivered when it counts.
Q: Which QB's are good fantasy pics but not good if you're looking to see there team in the super bowl?
Fantasy: Young, Manning, Elway.
Super Bowl: Montana, Brady, Aikman.

Montana
Brady
Manning
Tommy has to win a few more to be the goat. Out of the three Tom has had the least offensive talent around him. Two words Antoine Smith, lol. Brady has a playoff record of 14 - 3 with 3 rings. While Manning is a fantastic qb, and a legit candid for the goat, he has always been surrounded by pro bowl players. From his offensive line to his rb. Brady had Smith Manning had edge. Brady has had three sets of average/subpar wr's. Manning had had two of the greatest of all time since for his carreer. Harrison is a first round hof no questions asked. Manning has always had the better o line, and the better weapons. Polian is a offensive wizard. I am not taking anything away from manning, but I would like to see him take Reche Caldwell , A past his prime Troy Brown, and a Jaber Gaffney all the way to the afc championship game. I cannot see him having the same type of stats during the season with Reche Caldwell/Gaffney running around out there. My main knock on Manning is not his skill. Talent wise he is prob the best to play the game, but what has he had to go through? When was he not put in the best offensive systems you could dream up? How many diff wr's/players has he won sb's with? Has he ever won with "average" wr's? How about dealing with injury? Did he ever toss teamates under the bus? How many of his best players did he lose to f/a or trade?Losing coaches and coordinators? Brady and manning are apples and oranges.

I agree. Tom Brady has done it with sub par talent in many respects considering the talent Montana and Manning have and had.
(this is coming from a die hard Niner fan and a BIG time Montana fan.)

I am also a big Montana fan. As much as I love Tom he has some things to accomplish before he passes the goat Joe Montana. Statistically speaking Brady is on track to be right up there with Montana when he retires. The sb's will differentiate the two. Montana is the goat at this time. The guy was a amazing.
-
dude how do you justify manning over brady in the clutch...
I actually hate manning but I think if you put Manning with the Pats he does the same thing Brady did
-

Manning had horrendous playoff stats this year throwing to two of the greatest receivers of all time. Recievers he has been working with forever. He had horrendus stats with a superior offensive line to the pats also. Why did he have a bad game in kc? They where not a good team. They did not even show up to play.
If manning could not win a sb with the best offensive talent around him for 6 consecutive years, how could you expect him to take his team to the afc championship game with a lesser offensive line, and a bunch of misfit wr's that never looked at a colts playbook until seasons start? Caldwell missed half of preseason as a rookie! As you know routes are based on timing and feel. Pretty hard to do those things if guys are missing preseason. The colts d stepped up and carried them during those first two games. Manning did not throw a single td in the Baltimore game. He threw ints not td's.
When Brady lost Branch and Givens you could see the drop off in his production. branch and G are not in the same league as Wayne and Harrison. If you replaced those two guys w Caldwell and Gaffney there would be a monster drop off. Caldwell is slow as shit. A big reason Toms stats where down was the fact Caldwell and co where to slow to create separation.
At the start of the season Caldwell and Gaffney where terrible. By then end of the season in the playoffs they where putting up massive numbers despite there shortcomings. Yea Caldwell muffed a pass that would have taken the pats to another sb, but as a whole his numbers where huge. His catch in the San D game was huge.To me that is more impressive then Manning taking athletic freaks of nature and making them better. People claim Manning makes his guys so much better. Take a look at a Harrison highlight real. The guy is a athletic freak. I am not saying manning is not great, but no one ever points out who he has been surrounded by his entire career.

Vince Young is overrated. And not just a little.
-
dude how do you justify manning over brady in the clutch...
when it comes to "the clutch" brady is overrated
he led his team down the field for about 30 yards for vinitieri to kick the winning field goal
people forget that in the super bowl against the panthers their dumbass kicker kicked the ball out of bounds placing the ball on the 40 yard line right before the pats winning drive

He can be in as great a shape as he wants but there is no way he's faster now than he was in his early to mid twenties, sad to say.
He needs to do whatever it takes to stay ahead of the ageing curve. At 32 years old, he's entering his swan song as an NFL player.
But come to think of it....Ray will probably try to play into his late 30's because he loves the game SO MUCH. Crazy passion. I remember Clay Matthews from the Browns played into his 19th season and still was productive. I can say the same thing about Ray. Therefore, I think he'll always make it a point to be in great shape with little down time in the offseason.

I agree with this.

As a lifelong Raider fan - until a few years ago - I always had a tremendous respect for Elway and pulled for his Bronco teams in their Super Bowl runs. The guy was a competitor and even though the 'come from behind' stat can be highly overrated, he just had a knack for getting his teams in position to win.
I don't know that Brady has the same physical toughness, but he's as mentally tough as any QB I've seen in my lifetime...even if he did go to Michigan.

Shocking, isn't it?

Body88 holy shit man i actually read your whole postt you hit that shit right on the money..you are definitely a fiehard football fan...but lemme ask you this...from the 80's until today who would you want to have as best qb,rb,reciever combo??
myself i'd go with Montana(in his prime) Rice(in his prime) and emmit smith(in his prime)..what would you go with?
-
I think Trent Green is overrated...who would give up a second round pick for a 37 year old QB stupifies me.

Plus the history of concussions.. They ended Troy Aikman's career..
Should have given Culpepper another shot.
-
is terrell owens overrated? and who is not on this list that should be...
and with the game on the line who would you pick at QB:
Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?
Troy Aikman or Steve Young?
John Elway or Joe Montana?
damn i love this friggin board... ;D
Brady-Three Superbowl rings
Aikman-i hate him more than anybody...but his accuracy was incredible
Elway That run and dive he did in the 96 superbowl for a first down is legendary

Not sure why they didn't have room for Charles Woodson - he's easily one of the top-5 most overrated players of this decade.
I didn't understand why GB signed him. I thought he couldn't put a full season together b/c he's made of glass but he had a very respectable year. I still don't think he's worth the big bucks and he's not 1/2 as good as he thinks he is.
