"We received phone call today (Thursday November 8 ) from Mike Matarazzo, who told us he had suffered a heart attack on Monday, Nov 5. Matarazzo had been hospitalized for a couple days but is now back in his home in Modesto, California.
Arguably the most popular bodybuilder of the 1990s, Matarazzo was first diagnosed with heart problems three years ago, when, in December of 2004, he underwent triple bypass surgery. After this most recent setback, Matarazzo has had a pacemaker installed and has been instructed by doctors to take it easy for a while. According to Matarazzo, he had been "training regularly and eating clean" until the heart attack.
Matarazzo informed us he wanted everyone to know he is taking this latest challenge in stride, philosophically adding, "You just play the cards that life gives you." As for his condition, Matarazzo told us, "The doctors said only 25% of my heart was functioning." Those who know Mike will tell you 25 percent of the Matarazzo heart is about 120 percent that of a normal person's.
Let's all wish him well and a speedy recovery. "

Genetics will kick your ass everytime.
-
hopefully for him and his family and loved ones he'll get better quickly.
-
Oh no,
That is just horrible news!! I was just thinking about Mike Matarzzo when replying to the Puckett thread.
I remember months after his first heart surgery, Flex Mag did an interview on Mike. The shit Mike was saying hit me hard. It was raw.... almost too raw for Flex Mag to publish.
Hope he recovers.

Not being a smart ass, but I wonder if this would have happend regardless of the 4 grams of test, gh, decca, insulin etc.... he was taking. Thoughts? I do agree genetics plays a huge role.

For heaven's sake, when will you guys stop being so ignorant!!
Read the Puckett thread.

You don't even know why Puckett died. Could have been a cocaine OD or anything!

ROFL.
Ignorant idiot.

ROFL.
Ignorant idiot.
Why is he an idiot? Juice ain't going to kill someone that is 22. Sorry won't happen.
-
Mike used to eat inhuman amounts of red meat, that would have been more of a contributing factor than the drugs.

Ignorant idiot.
OK, please state the exact cause of death here and when the autopsy results come back we'll see if you were right. Maybe an autopsy is worthless since you have already confirmed the cause with 100% certainty?
BTW, how many of the guys who've dropped out of the sport due to health issues had rec drug problems? A far more likely cause than any steroid.
-
Dude,
I had 6" of my small intestine pulled out and my doctor said it was "genetic and from natural causes". Deep down I knew better but it made me feel better to think I was not destructing myself.
GH and Test are great when used correctly.
The exotic drugs are going to take a toll on your body. With juice comes added strength..... More strength than what your body was intended to have. I fucking love lifting heavy ass weight more than anything but I also understand when you get to "THAT LEVEL", your body is going to reject it.
Lifting heavy weights will lower your immune system. It is not good for blood pressure. Add fina , clen, insulin and a lot food. This is why I advocate taking an easier offseason (something I never did in the past) and figuring out your body to do this more efficient.

Juice will not kill anyone at 22. An eight ball of blow in an hour will. Your comment made perfect sense.

The whole steroid/drugs contributing to early death argument is a joke, sometimes people die young. Millions of young people use steroids daily around the world, why aren't they all dying suddenly. Their are masses of documented cases of people using steroids and other bodybuilding drugs for many decades with very few side effects, where are all the bodies from these so called lethal drugs that are killing people young.

I am not saying JUICE. That was the other user that whores on this account.
I am saying a combination of heavy lifting (red faced, eyes bulging out of orbital sockets), heavy eating, and exotic substances will contribute to your death.
For what it is worth, at my work site I see many individuals that have shot so much meth in their body that they have deformed arms from massive sores. Guess what people, they are still alive and have been addicted for 3/4 of their life. A little more off the wall info for you, they like to pick off their scabs and sell them to other addicts because of the rejected chemicals in their body fluids. They like to lick and eat the scabs to get a high.

You still don't know what the hell happened to this guy, what he was on, what he had been on, what his blood pressure was, etc. No one is saying the drugs are side-effect free, but don't jump to conclusions until you know the whole story.
Did your doctor know you had taken steroids? If he couldn't pin it on steroids how can you? You know they love to blame steroids.

I have no idea what you are trying to say and who I'm responding to.
-
We don't know what caused his death, people.
I've said before....those who "support" drug use, find zero fault at times like these, while those demonize them (drugs), will blame them entirely. I'd like to think that truth is somewhere in the middle.
-
eating all that red meat is a biatch
-
Van,
Of course you don't know how to respond, nor understand what I am trying to say. I have seen so much shit it is sickening.
Mike is fairly open about the bad taste in his mouth with bodybuilding. Although he has said in the past that he would not change the past, he also says he does not advocate bodybuilding to anyone.
After this second heart attack I wonder if he would change his previous statements. Mike is a great guy and I hope he recovers.
-
I see yet another donation for Mike from Flex magazine. ::)

Mike had a long history of bodybuilding drug use. Long history of poor cholesterol readings. Then we have this young kid who just dropped dead and we don't know the exact cause. Different scenarios, no?

i think he'd have had heart problems no matter what, he probably just brought it 15 years sooner with the drug use.
Steroids don't usually "Add" problems, they "add to them" and increase the rate.
Im sure mike would tell you he isn't the only one in his family with a history of heart issues.
sucks either way, it's a shame that guys like Matarazzo are taking an ass kicking this early in their lives.
-
scary stuff all around this week. Hope mike recovers and does whatever steps are necessary to stay alive. being 120 pound vegan might not be too bad of an alternative at this point.

It's hard to go back after this. :'(

why are people assuming anything about pucketts death.. ? there are no results yet.. none.. as for mike m.. he admits to eating pounds.. yes pounds of red meat a day.. he liked other substances too.. so lets stop "assuming" what we absolutely dont know.. until you hear the autopsy then just say "rip" and leave it alone.. >:(

ya know what they say...

Lats,
It's not about assuming....... it's about acknowledging.
A lot of these guys on this board will not acknowledge the fact that this shit is dangerous and it is going to have some adverse affects whether getting a few pimples or kidney failure.
The smart ones can figure this out quick and find ways around it.

Not being a smart ass, but I wonder if this would have happend regardless of the 4 grams of test, gh, decca, insulin etc.... he was taking. Thoughts? I do agree genetics plays a huge role.
One post (Above) you say the drugs could have caused the heart attack.
Another, you say "Juice will not kill someone at 22"..quite contradicting isn't that?
What difference does age matter and unless you lived with Mike, you have no idea how much he took vs. the kid? His heart issues are purely a genetic deal. Something Mike has been struggling with for a while. No one knows yet how the kid died, bet it had nothing to do with juice!
-
A little more off the wall info for you, they like to pick off their scabs and sell them to other addicts because of the rejected chemicals in their body fluids. They like to lick and eat the scabs to get a high.
I hope your not serious ! On another note, didn't Mike's Father die of a Heart Attack a couple Years back ?

No I said "I wonder". I also stated juice wont kill somebody at 22. 40-45=20 years of juicing different story.
-
What difference does age matter
It does matter. Duration of exposure. Plus Mike said he had had poor cholesterol for a long time.
-

Correct. I can someone say age doesn't matter.
-
I'd say Mike's heart troubles had far more to do with the bodybuilding lifestyle than Puckett's death. Unless Puckett was readying for a show, I doubt roids had much, if anything, to do with his premature passing.
-
kirby puckett died?
-
kirby puckett died?
damn. i just looked him up on wikipedia, he actually died almost 2 years ago. that dude could ball.
RIP kirby

Those who know Mike will tell you 25 percent of the Matarazzo heart is about 120 percent that of a normal person's.
haha, typical FLEX ignorance under the guise of optimism. It reminds me of when they said that Dennis James had double pneumonia because he had to be symmetrical. ;D
PS - I dig FLEX!!!
-
Is Matarazzo still working as a bail bondsman for AJ's Bail Bonds ??
-
Unless you have a predisposition to Heart Disease, High Cholesterol, High Blood pressure then steroids can be a ticking time Bomb.
But if you have a healthy heart Low Cholesterol low Blood Pressure no family history the chances of Moderate to high usage of anabolics i doubt will cause these problems just my opinion

I believe Mike had 0 good cholesterol since 1998. He was on Lipitor if I'm not mistaken.
A source I know who is not credible AT ALL said that Mike smoked rock. No clue if that is true though but given Mike's current heart condition, who knows?
-
Guys.....
Look. Former professional and amatuer bodybuilders are SUFFERING healthwise in the EARLY 40s because of the drugs they took when they were younger.
It's no secret. They are embarassed so they keep their mouths shut about it.
They have absolutely NO SEX DRIVE and their dicks don't work. All the Viagra in the world isn't going to help them either. Those bodily functions have SHUT DOWN.
This is causes them lack of confidence to the point of depression and failed marriages and relationships.
THEY WILL TELL YOU IT ISN'T WORTH--if they weren't so embarrassed and SELFISH.
Muscles NOW aren't worth all the problems LATER.
-
ya know what they say...
DIE BIG
DIE YOUNG
DIANABOL
hilarious ;D
-
Serge Nubret is closing in on 70 his staple diet of 4or 5 pounds of red meat a day, pluss god knows what he was taking My guess moderate amounts of juice through most of his adult life.
I think its genetics, some very heavy users will reach oldage
-
Worst were the chemicals. I have so many memories of being alone in a hotel room the week, five days or two days before a contest, and doing unspeakable things to my body--steroids, growth hormones, diuretics--anything and everything that we as bodybuilders do to achieve a certain look.
It wasn't worth it, was it Mike? You never listened to your family. Again, you are dragging them through a torrid time.
Mike's misery is a lesson to all of us.
-
A source I know who is not credible AT ALL said that Mike smoked rock. No clue if that is true though but given Mike's current heart condition, who knows?
About the shittiest thing in the world you can do is shittalk someone using someone else's words. Even worse, is that you know the information is not credible. So why repeat it?
-
- Mike continues his diatribe, in what is a very candid interview:
The greatest danger, though, is that, while dieting and training stay the same through the years, there's a compulsion to experiment more wildly with chemicals. Every day, guys are on the phone asking who's using what, where are they getting it, how are they mixing it?
Blame only one person, yourself!
Your self-centered and destructive behaviour has got you into this horrible mess... For what? A few plastic trophies and some soiled thongs.
My heart goes out to your family, who once again have to nurse you through another self-inflicted-castrophe!
-
I can't help but believe that if Mr. Matarazzo had access to supervision from knowledgable physicians, that he would not be in his current health situation. That is the real bitch about the Steroid Control Act, it has taken away the knowledgable doctors. Left to their own devices, bodybuilders when in doubt...up the dose.
-
Mike's drug fuelled rant continues:
If I could go back in time, those things never would have happened. I would have gone back to driving a truck. I have no doubt in my mind that the primary cause of my problem--the biggest thing--was the chemicals. It was the steroids, the growth hormones, the diuretics. We take Cytomel to lose fat, knowing it's an incredibly powerful thyroid drug, and that's only one of the many, many drugs out there taken by everyone, from amateurs to the highest level in the world.
Mike, we understand why bodybuilding has no credibility as a sport!
These lab-rats that call themselves Pros are reprehensible and vile junkies; as you clearly elude to.
Truck driver...lol.

Mike Matarazzo had the scariest moment of his life when on December 5th, 2004:http://www.getbig.com/iview/matarazzo041221.htm (http://www.getbig.com/iview/matarazzo041221.htm)

Wishing Mike a speedy recovery.
-
This IS such a great picture though!
-
Mike, your selfish and egotistical bodybuilding obsession now sees your family, once again, placed in the unenviable position as carers for your ailing body.
You chose to use chemicals because you could never accept your body. You wanted to be big and intimidating...Why couldn't you just be happy, being YOU ?
-
Hank, STFU. Regardless of what caused his problems, now is not the time to say shit about him.
-

Mike, yet another bodybuilding tragic!
There is a cruel-lesson to be learnt here.
Mike was well aware that this game of 'chemical-Russian-roulette' had its consequences. Unfortunately, he never heeded the warning signs.
Those who love and care for Mike, now have to, yet again, pick up the pieces of his flawed choices.
God bless.

Bro, not cool to make light of Mike's heart attack. Who cares what led to the tragedy (drugs, etc.), fact is, what's happened has happened. I wish him and his family the best in this difficult time.
-
"Those who know Mike will tell you 25 percent of the Matarazzo heart is about 120 percent that of a normal person's."

::)
Well, maybe the author of the article was referring to the fact that steroid use cause an abnormal growth to the heart, especially causing an enlarged left ventricle. 8)
-
My prayers go out to his family. Once again, they will 'pick up the pieces' and try to move on with their lives.
It is just a pity that Mike chose this path of destruction. In doing so, he has hijacked the freedoms of his loved ones... Yes, hijacked!
-They, once again, are shackled to this very sick man. And because they love him, will do what it takes so that he can find some comfort in what is now a human tragedy!

A dipshit is there any way you could possibly lead a life so you kill yourself. Really, that would be cool with everyone. Please just kill yourself but make sure you put it on youtube

Haha, for once Onlyme is speaking some sense. ;)
-
hank is usually funny but this is an exception. mike isnt making excuses and took ownership of his decisions, so berating him is pointless. i hope he pulls through this.
-
Mike thoughlessly pursued a career that was purely focused on vanity! He relecklessly injected and swallowed chemicals; to the utter horror of those close to him!
The real victims here, are his family! Mike new the cosequences of his actions.
Yes, Mike has brought untold misery to his life, but more significantly, has provided more trauma and horror to those closest to him!
I pray for the mistakes of this former juiced-up Pro, who became fixated playing the size-game.
-

Its probably true. Mike is black so he definitely smokes rocks.

Oh, how shocking, another pro bodybuilder with chronic health problems!
It is an occupational-hazard for Christ sake! It is the nature of the pharmaceutical-beast! Yes, you inject, and you pay with your health!
I have absolutely no sympathy for these syringe-shooting Neanderthals. They know the risks, they are aware of the fallout!
Again, i prey for your loved ones Mike; who again have to make sense of 'the mess' that is your life!
-
Don't go in with hank wood. Kid, we know you have some "issues", don't express them here particulary in this topic.
Wish Mike a speedy recovery.....

prey - pray
The lion eats his prey.
I pray for you at night.
That was a harsh post...haha
Matarazzo seems like a decent guy. He know he fucked up, he didn't blame anyone but himself. You can't really bash that. Not a choice most would make, but a choice almost every pro bodybuilder does. It's honestly, beyond idiotic behavior. In my eyes, competing is usually nothing more than rationalizing irrational cycles and placing a purpose, where there really is none.
-
Hank is a classic example of why euthanasia should be made legal, the poor man is obviously suffering deeply and his demented ramblings and obvious delusions must be a drain on anybody he comes near. It would be a win-win for everyone if Hank was just put to sleep. It is sad to see such a pain filled individual spiral out of control in a public forum like this. I pray for Hanks family, they must have endured so much and suffered horrendously. Not Hating, Just my opinion.
Peace

ahahaha LOOOOOLOLOLOLL
'Hank', matarazzo had 21 inch calves, what have you ever done???
-
By all reports, Mike was a stand-up guy. He lived his life on a knife edge, dabbling in all things chemical; anything that would give him an edge.
Bodybuilding was his lilfe and he would do whatever it took to look big, bold and threatening!
As they say in Pro-circles; you live by the needle, you die by the needle.
What a sad irony.
I believe if Mike was given his chance over again, he would have chosen health over ego.
I prey for your family Mike. You are again putting them through yet another living hell!

I'm new here....but why isn't Hank Wood banned yet?
He's Ron's gimmick account.
-
For the record, i hope Mike makes a full recovery.
Mikes condition raises more questions than answers though:
-What is the future for this so-called sport?
-Why are our so-called athletes falling prey to debilitating illnesses and health complications?
-Why are so many young men dying prematurely?
If we continue to ignore these issues the sport will further spiral out of control. Athletes will continue to become ill and some will die.
For Christ sake, doesn't anyone care?

You fuckers, Mike almost died for you bitches!

worst gimmick ever.

WOW!..............sad news
i remember when Mike was getting ready for the U.S.A.'S,he went to the same gym i did (golds gym Everett ma)
his wife worked where i worked so i saw him frequently, after he won and turned pro he told me stories about how people would freak out and just stare at him wherever he went (shopping mall etc),he drew a crowd whenever he went, when he stopped in the bar/club i worked at i would watch as people would point, whisper then gather around him like a celebrity,it was a crazy time,on a warm summer night Mike would show up with a tank top on and be outside talking to people for an hour or 2 before he was even able to get in the club!,many years later when Mike was living in Cali i visited Venice and we had lunch at the firehouse (he was larger than life still),Mike had many many stories and was full of life then..............this to me is particularly sad news,i wish him well and a speedy recovery!!!
i can't stress enough...great great guy!
-
A great guy, always very nice and had time to talk to me every time I had saw him!
Wishing him a speedy recovery!

That shit can happen to anyone. My sister enlaw is only 40 and she had a heart attack 3 years ago. They had to give her a quadruple bypass. She is much better now but the point is that shit can happen to anyone at anytime.

Well yeah..it can. you are 100% correct. Lightning could strike anyone at anytime too...but if your playing Golf in a thunderstorm you are asking for it. I am not saying he deserved to have a heart attack and I'm not blaming the bb drugs either..just pointing out the obvious that certain activities can increase the chances . Thoughts go out to his family.

I agree with this, with drugs and now add insulin into the picture, it's made BBing even more of a risk, one thing for sure though, the IFBB doesn't give a rip about their "athletes" and former "athletes"...it's all about the almighty bottomline for them. No insurance, no retirement, no money, NO NOTHING, Mike was a Weider boy and a big name in the BBing world, he was put by the waste side and the IFBB basically shit on him. Any other LEGIT athletic organization would helped to look out for the welfare of they're athletes and retirees, same with Flex, he almost went broke with that illness and same with anyone else with who had any health problems, sponsers and organizations did nothing as far as I know to help. Bottomline.........it's the BOTTOMLINE, they want you to be loyal to them, but will they be loyal to you? I think not!!

I think not!!
gotta agree with this, if Tiger Woods or Shaq HAD SOME illness relating to sports they would be well taken care of finacially
Mike was abandoned by the sport he loved so much
sad

maybe the weiders can donate some of their schmoe memorabilia for an auction to help mike out...

Its like saying ..... When a drunk driver crashes his car into a tree....it was more him driving a car into the tree which caused the accident, Alcohol just made it happen faster.

I wonder if Joe or Ben Weider are aware of the situation Mike is facing nowadays....
For all of the magazines, shit supplements like mega mass 5,000,000, tickets for shows, etc that Mike helped to sell, what help the Weider enterprises land to Mike at his lowest in life? And Peter McGough had the nerve to ask at Flex magazine for the fans to help Mike financially for all of the good memories and inspirations he gave to the fans along the years as a pro. How much McGough donated himself for Mike's debts in hospital? How much the magazine he runs for Joe donated for Mike? How much Rafael Santonja, a crook beyond crooked, donated for Mike's sake? How much the CEO of Weider Supplements had donated for Mike, for all of those Metaform and Megamass ads that he was advertising for them for years - and surely helped to sell a lot of them. Mike was the main posterboy for those supplements, he and Gunther, only keep in mind that at the time Gunther was far form the top of his career, the oposit of Mike, who was all over the place in the bb industry.
The fitness industry treats their athletes like shit. Bodybuilding as an industry is a fucking disgrace, a shame. This sport should be kept amateur only, because it would force the guys to keep their day job as the main source of income.
My guess is that, whoever invented this sport as we know it, i.e., the competitions and the way a show is judged to reach a winner in the end, never intended bodybuilding to be a professional endeavour where their participants could make enough money to make a living of it. That's waht I think. It should be like it was at its inception: a way to evaluate who had the best physique amongst the ones who liked to sculpt and build their bodies, just that. Competitors worked the week of the show until friday, and went onstage on saturday night. Once the show was finished, he grabed his trophy, and as a prize he would won a year free membership at the gym he used to train, that's it.
When bodybuilding was this way people never heard about athletes dropping of sudden death like these days.
THE WEIDERS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!

That's kinda what I was getting at . Sucks for anyone that young to have health problems but there are always consequences to everything to some degree...not just drug use but lifestyle in general.

You make your bed, now get f*cked in it... :'(
I wouldn't go that far...but I get your point. We all do make our bed..but choices we make when we are younger are often foolish and come back to haunt us. That doesn't mean we necessarily deserve what we get..but we obviously pay for our mistakes..at least some of us do.

That shit can happen to anyone. My sister enlaw is only 40 and she had a heart attack 3 years ago. They had to give her a quadruple bypass. She is much better now but the point is that shit can happen to anyone at anytime.
My ex-husband had a heart attack (at 32) and a stroke (at 38). Needless to say he was not a person who was careful with his diet, smoked and never exercised. Still doesn't. We divorced over 18 years ago, he was wearing a size 38 pants. Now he looks just like John Candy. :-\

About the shittiest thing in the world you can do is shittalk someone using someone else's words. Even worse, is that you know the information is not credible. So why repeat it?
Ed,
Given the circumstances I'm kind of starting to believe it might be true...
You have to wonder exactly what it is that contributed to Mike's condition given that he had no genetic history of heart disease. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but we all know that bodybuilding and recreational drugs aren't always independent of one another.

congratulations on your divorce.
And your next breakup with Mike....time to move on huh Laura

That was a harsh post...haha
Matarazzo seems like a decent guy. He know he fucked up, he didn't blame anyone but himself. You can't really bash that. Not a choice most would make, but a choice almost every pro bodybuilder does. It's honestly, beyond idiotic behavior. In my eyes, competing is usually nothing more than rationalizing irrational cycles and placing a purpose, where there really is none.
He knows he fucked up. ;D

CRIS,
In life we get our market value. No one forced Mike on stage with a cattle prod. He was aware of the terms and agreed to them. At this point, Weider doesn't owe Mike anything. He received his recompense for his work already.

Well then he should have negotiated that into his contract..I think I deserve $145 bucks per hour but that isn't what I agreed to when I was hired so how can I complain that I don't get it? Not saying they shouldn't get coverage but they KNOW they don't have it so boo fucking hoo.
P.S. Good luck getting any insurance carier to insure an IFBB PRO'S HEALTH LMFAO!!
Where I work we have had to get bloodwork and physical done the last couple of years to even qualify for a decent rate on our insurance..of you don't score so high on a scale they have your premiums are about double..which is bullshit because they measure your bodyfat percentage by height weight and waste circumferance..that's it. ..anybody with any amount of muscle will score poorly because they weigh more...I can just imagine a PRO BB

I see different, Matt. The boys from the 90s could well be aware of POSSIBLE risks, but I'm willing to bet that they could not possibly imagine, not even in their wildest nightmares, that the damage to their bodies would occur to the extent that is public known, today. They were the first 'guinea pigs', so to speak, of that new era of technological/chemical enhancement of overwhelming magnitude, compared to their predecessors. The boys from the 70s and the 80s were not suffering from possible side effects like the 90s generation are suffering today, so how could they know better?
It is my true belief that Weider should be almost entitled to come to Mike's aid in this case.....Mike has done a lot more for Weider's enterprises than the salary he received for the job, you know that, and Joe knows it , too. The price the poor guy is paying is outta proportion for the dream he pursued. I mean, what would cost to Weider helping Mike with his medical bills compared to the fortune he owns?? C'mon, people.....At least once the Weider enterprises could bee seen with good eyes by the public that follows the sport, for at least once, just for a 'change of pace', do something altruist and charity, for the life of a human being.

I love playing paddleball.
If I develop carpal tunnel syndrome from doing it 12 hours a day, should the paddleball companies pay for my surgery? no. Cause I was stupid enough to do something that hurt me, without preparing for the consequences.
Mike did drugs and ate big beef to get big muscles. He could have chosen to negotiate a deal with health insurance, or he could have gone into personal training, modeling law school, whatever.
He chose to compete in the IFBB, which entailed massive drug and food use. pro bodybuilders are more aware than anyone, of the dangers.
IFBB ran a business. mike, if you ever ran a business, would you feel financially responsible for expensive operations of employees who retired 10 years ago because 'they gave it their all' when they worked for you?

My take.................Wei ders and others got rich off of bodybuilders/bodybuilding (until vince mcmahon started his World Bodybuilding Federation weiders didn't even offer bodybuilders paid contracts!),these guys wouldn't even get paid to be in the magazines (what other sport does that?!?!?)
Mike took what he needed to take to be competitive and now he has health problems
workmans comp??? he should get something!...............wtf no benefits, no health plan ,and you got to take a TON of illegal drugs just to be competitive!
Mike should be taken well care of for the rest of his life IMO
-

Sorry to burst your bubble but that can happen to anybody. Heart attacks, cancer and other medical problems people experience is a common thing in todays world. The shit doesn't just happen to bbdr's. To say that is moronic. Thats why, live each day and make the best of it because you don't know what tomorrow holds. Illnesses can happen to anyone anytime anyplace.
-

No, Mike shouldn't get anything.
Profits aren't a bad thing. Profits also aren't a reason to make an employer obligated to give back more to an employee. Weider developed his empire and his fortune through undertaking great risk and the only person who is entitled to his profit is himself whether that profit is one hundred dollars or one hundred million dollars.
Mike consented to the terms of his employment and was already compensated for his work. Why now should he be owed anything else? He shouldn't be owed anything legally at least. If Weider wants to, through the kindness of his own heart and nothing more, offer Mike something - good for him. But by no means should he be forced to do it.
-

Well said and to the point!
If the IFBB were a 'business', like some people here like to call it, they would be entitled to offer to their "employees" health insurance plan, retirement plan, etc, just like a real company does. This is called PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT. What's IFBB'S best investment? ATHLETES. They are their best assets. What if Mike got sick at the highest point of his carrer, around 1996/97? Sure, some smartasses here would jump in saying: "There's always a new and willing soul fresh form the bus around Venice". To that I say "my ass", because of something called PERSONAL TALENT, that unique gift only the person who owns it can display. Amongst a multitude of bodybuilders, why would the Weiders pick Mike to endorse their products? Because they found something unique in him, and not just because of his (awesome) physique, but his personality and charisma, as well.
In other words, Mike as a bodybuilders did not have any options to do his job as an athlete and minimize the risks involved, i.e., having a health insurance deal provided by his 'employers', The Weiders.
Even if you refute that, I say why would it be impossible for Joe Weider give a helping hand to Mike, in his case? His empire was built over athletes talents, health, power, strenght, sacrifice, etc....If the sport depended on Joe's physique to sell, it would be dead at its inception!!!! Not even that sculpture with Joes' head reflects his true physique (it was Robby Robinson's) so that speaks A LOT on the degree of dependence of Weiders enterprises on their athletes.
-
I. They were the first 'guinea pigs', so to speak, of that new era of technological/chemical enhancement of overwhelming magnitude, compared to their predecessors. It's called common sense. Give me a break. Taking thousands of miligrams of synthetic hormones is not something that even remotely sounds like a healthy thing to do. I feel bad for the guy and his family but anyone that is surprised by this is a fool.
Let's take, for instance, back in 1993 Flex Wheeler was reported to have had a body fat of 0.0%!! This was the week before the Olympia and it was also the lowest reading ever recorded at Gold's Gym....No way is dieting down to 0.0% a healthy thing to do,but he did it,and now everyone tries it and this is what happens.
-
I think some of you guys need to read the philosophy of Ayn Rand.
Mike performed work for the Weider's. He was given a set series of benefits and agreed to the terms and was well aware that should years down the road his health suffer, the Weider's would not be required to take care of him at that point. Mike gave his adult consent every step of the way.
What part of that is so difficult to understand? If you want to go and argue that the original terms were unfair and Mike should have demanded better terms at the time of the contract, that is a completely separate debate.
-

IF you don't want to take the drugs get a freaking job like the rest of us. ::) ::) ::) ::) He knew there was no health plan when he got into it...I have a shit ton of respect for you Mike but man you are sounding like a complete fool right now.(sorry) Yes they got rich off him but he chose that path...he could have just got a job like anyone else.Nobody has to be a bber

I talked to Mike at the height of his "fame"(he was a top bodybuilder/top guy in the sport, competing on the Olympia stage)
finacially ..................he was not doing well (the cost to compete and not place even tho a crowd favorite was killing him!)
to be a top athlete and be broke is unheard of!...........(name another sport a top athlete at the height of his fame/game is broke)
bodybuilders get azz raped because they do it primarily because they have a deep love for the sport
they are not in it for money and thus they get terribly exploited

Mike is trying to argue that Weider built his empire on the basis of men taking illegal drugs and they should therefore be taken care of when things go bad. He's also implying that a company's obligation to compensate their employees is based on how profitable they are.
I happen to disagree with him and any good economist would also. Politicians routinely debate matters like this which have LONG been closed by economists and other world experts. When I see topics like this discussed on the news, I always get a little annoyed. However, Mike is an individual stating his opinion and that is a little different than a politician who formulates policy based on not having a great understanding of a certain topic. I'm sure Mike would think differently if he studied economics or philosophy in depth. I can see that his intentions are in the right place.

I agree...I love drag racing..but guess what. I know I can't make a living doing it so I have a full time job and I drag race as a hobbie for fun. It isn't like these guys worked for weider for years with health coverage and had it taken away..they knew the score when they chose that career. If my boss came out and told me I wasn't gona have any health care , 401k or what have you...I would go elsewhere...apparantly that wasn't a priority for these guys...to me it is.

Mike used to eat inhuman amounts of red meat, that would have been more of a contributing factor than the drugs.
he probably overdid everything. drugs, food, training, partying..etc.
thats the bodybuilder mentality.
why do always people on bb boards get so defensive...for sure genetics plays a big part when you have heart attacks, but like e-kul says mike used to eat crazy amounts of red meat, and the steroids sure dont help.
steroids wont kill you straight away (as some media will have you believe) but at the same time there is no doubt they are harmful in the long run. how can you even dispute that?
haha epic trying to repress aas dangers just because you use steroids yourself. ::)

Oh I agree. WEIDER SHOULD be man enough to realize this and help out on his own...if he has a concience. Now if that is what you are saying Mike I apologize..I took your argument to be that they should have to pay..just as my employer would be required to pay if I lost a hand in a machine or something. I honestly feel bad for the guy..for any of em that have health issues, but I think it will get much worse the next five or six years

Yes, and those terms are understood from the beginning by the athletes.

You're arguing that since bodybuilders built the Weider empire that they are entitled to compensation in times like this. You are also saying that to some extent, Weider built his empire on exploitation of the workers.
While I understand where you're coming from, I disagree for reasons I've mentioned above.

I am not being defensive of the drugs hat bodybuilders use, they carry great risks, and personally I have never taken any serious bodybuilding drugs except a Ephedrine/caffeine/Aspirin stack which I lasted a week on as it made me quite hyper - a feeling I didn't like). But my personal opinion is that the huge amounts of red meat Mike ate would have had more of a factor than the drugs - it probably was a combination of the two, but I know that large amount of red meat will clog the arteries - leading to all type of heart related problems. Mike was unique in that he ate so much red meat, most pros use chicken and fish, and I think Jay eats primarily fish for his pre-contest diet. Also being too large, even if it is muscle, puts a great strain on the heart muscle, A lot of big men have heart troubles. Kevin Levrone has the right idea, when he stopped competing he trimmed right down. Smart approach and one that will keep him healthier longer.

Hey, did you know you can do bodybuilding and not take drugs?
Your comment should read, some people take lots of gear and by competing, it places a "purpose" behind aimless heavy drug use. Juicers are some of the most delusional people out there. All Croatch imitators :D Most can't do jack shit natural, this is the reason for ingesting them to begin with. It is how it is.

I think most of the people who are into competitive bodybuilding are attention seekers. They are the people wearing wifebeaters at nightclubs and tight shirts so people notice them.
I agree that most people who take lots of gear are delusional. THey suffer from Body Dysmorphia and think they are small even if they are big and ripped. My ex was probably the most insecure man I have EVER met, and he looked incredible.
I just don't see how it's worth it on any level. These cats aren't getting paid Jack shit, and they aren't healthy at all. What is the point?

It was the red meat!
nothing to do with the 4g test/week !

I weep for your loving family Mike, who again, have to provide care for you!
God bless.
-
He knew there was no health insurance when he worked for Weider. If he didn't like it there were 10 guys waiting to take his place.
How does Weider owe him anything, in that case did those who used the Weider products advertised by Mike and didn't get his results, does Mike now owe them something? No. Cause he was being paid then a finite amount for a specific task.
-
HAHAHAHAHAHA
-
Oh cry me a river! Sick and dying bodybuilders, they are a dime a dozen!
Yes, Mike's life is an absolute tragedy! However, let us not ever forget the 'care givers'. Yes, his loving family are now the ones who have to nurse him through another Mike-inflicted nightmare!
God bless.
-
Mike was one of the nicest bb'ers I ever met. At the time he was big as a house and kinda just did cardio at my gym he didn't look like he did any serious working out at my gym he was just in and out, but he spent time and told me about the sport and told me I had good potential, he told me his diet and I thought 5lbs of red meat was a little excessive but he was a pro so I felt he knew what he was doing. Hank wood if you knew the man you wouldn't say those harsh things about him, but thats your opinion
-
Look, Pro Bodybuilders are notoriously self-obsessed, vanity-driven, insecure little men. Whether Mike fits this mold is open to conjecture.
Bottom line, Mike can inject and pop whatever he wants, that is his business. However, when the result is 'compromised healthful functioning' and it his loved-one's who have to 'pick up the pieces', that is where i have issue!

Bro, honestly.....not meaning to sound rude, but waht the fuck are you doing, lurking in here??? Every post of yours is 'outta place', so to speak. You are always saying things that makes every bb fan want to reach your neck through the PC screen and suck the life out of you!! Gee....did you ever have something positive to say about the sport or the athletes??? My guess is that you are a "never was" or a frustrated-tried-to-turn-pro-but fucked-up kinda athlete or something. You have great issues with the sport, it's obvious. You should go work it out of your system, seek some help! In the meantime save us from your acid comments and dark humor...they are not necessary.

God bless.
I like how you said 3 posts above this one "I weep" and then on this post you say "oh cry me a river" ::)
you are weird and very unfunny

:( damn...get better fast Mike

No one forced Mike to put needles in his butt or consume inhumane amounts of red meat!
No one held a gun to his head and said you have to pursue this 'mindless profession' they call Pro Bodybuilding!
Mike made his choices!
Yes, he is a great guy, genuine, honest, blah, blah, blah. However, he let the trappings of empty promises fool him. He now has to live with this.
And yes, his family are the ones really suffering.
Peace.

In an interview with George Farah at the 2004 Arnold Classic, Mike stated:
"I'm healthy as hell."
He truly had no clue.

Peace

regardless of his placings, he did alot for the sport in the way of getting the crowd going and i respect that. seems like a nice guy too. hope he takes it easy
-
Oh for Christ sake, we all respect Mike and what he has done for this sport...whatever that is!
We all agree, 'It is always about Mike!'
I think his family are well aware that Mike's problems have stemmed from that fact that, 'It has always been about Mike!'
Get well soon Mike, but maybe show some respect for the hospital workers and the caregivers who are again burdened with task of looking after you!

u can say 'it has always been about so and so' to any bber. quite often their life is bbing. why shouldnt they devote most of their time to it? especially if they want to become a professional. if that means closing people off, so be it. they can find others to entertain them. if his family are hurt by his attack, so what? they surely must have known mike was a pro bb by now and i bet theyve even said to themselves 'heart attack waiting to happen.' mike will do what he wants and i just hope its a healthy choice, for HIS sake.

Their is something seriously wrong with this Hank Wood, Like bodybuilders are the only self obsessed narcissistic individuals on the planet, Look around, almost everyone you meet is self obsessed, to make a living these days, to succeed in any career you need to focus almost entirely on that career at the expense of wife, family and friends. Judging by your posts Hank, you appear to be very self obsessed, Why aren't you out doing charity work at the local hospital if community service is what you preach instead of spewing bullshit all over these boards, writing like you have some monopoly on the truth. Your inferiority complex is evident in every post you make, I don't think your in any position to psychologically analyse anybody considering the fragility of your own psyche. I have noticed that you have never responded to any of my critique's of your posts, are you afraid to take on someone who may stand up to you or is it easier to cowardly attack those not present.
-
Mike, you still have a modest following of fans...in time, they will come out of the woodwork and lend you support.
You have a big heart and i know you will attack this health issue with the same passion and spirit that you displayed when chasing the roids.
And yes, my heart goes out to your loving family who are making sure your recovery is comfortable.

He seems like a fun guy to hang out with...

Look, the truth can be heart-felt at times, but Mike knew he was playing with fire.
In some crazy way, Mike kind of enjoyed the attention. Whether being on stage as a roided-freak, or lying in a hospital bed and having family cry over him, it was all 'just attention' for this man.
A man who has lived a life of selfishness!
Mike, my thoughts go out to your family, in what is another self-inflicted tragedy!

THIS GUY HAS NEVER HAD A HEART ATTACK!

Sorry to read about Mike. One factor keeps getting mentioned here, high red meat consumption. I've read some stuff linking red meat eating to cancer but not a whole lot regarding coronary health. Five pounds per day (if that's accurate and not just a rumor) does sound excessive, though. I would put the blame squarely on genetics and steroids.

I agree. This guy is annoying as fuck. Never, and I mean, never, says anything positive about anything or anyone. The guy has a degree in physics and he's at a bodybuilding board, so you guess he's one of those frustrated nerds who's still traumatized by high school and hangs around here pretending to a jock to vent out his frustrations, in the same way he ahnged around the jocks in high school trying to be accepted by them even though they beat the shit out of him every day.
