Title: MisterMagoo attempts the 225 deadlift rep-out challenge: FAIL
Post by: MisterMagoo on December 21, 2007, 04:04:13 PM
i know the contest deadline was a while ago, but i had some medical issues a week ago so i'm going for it now. might not count, but fuck it i said i'd throw my hat in so here it is.  :P

i would have kept going, but i just couldn't catch my breath and didn't feel confident in going any higher, felt like my heart was going to go out on me.  >:(

I honestly don't know if the thats a lot of reps or not. It's no 113. ;) But seriously Magoo, can you summarize this "blasphemy challenge"?

i hit 515 about a month and a half ago, but for some reason lately 495 has been giving me problems. i think i've been neglecting my lower back, if my shitty good morning numbers are anything to go by.

i'm telling you, your muscles will be fine, but it's like trying to run laps while holding a keg, it's not that heavy, you just get worn down.

there was a thing called the "blasphemy challenge" hosted by a fellow named Brian Flemming who made a documentary entitled "The God Who Wasn't There". he made a challenge to give away 1000 free copies of his dvd or something to people who would make a video of themselves saying "i deny the holy spirit" in violation of mark 3:29. so i responded to it as a more rational atheist.

by the way, i hope hearing my voice makes EVERYONE realize that it wasn't me on that damn big nation episode.  :P

almost anyone who can pull 500 for a single could do it it's just a matter of what the time frame is like 10 minutes or something so you could rest with your hands on the bar and catch your breath for 30-40 seconds and get a second wind.

Is the challenge to do the most reps in one minute or the most reps period?

BTW good job those are fast reps.

i believe it was 3 minutes, but damn there's just no way i was going to keep going. maybe if i'd sat the bar on the ground for a while but at that point i figured i'd done enough. like i said, my heart kinda went kerflooey a week ago and i didn't want to push too hard.

What's wrong with your heart bro?

last monday i was at the gym getting ready to deadlift, my heart rate jacked up from normal to around 180bpm. then my hands went all tingly and i collapsed. was in the ER for a few hours, they said it was just a normal heart palpitation. ::)

so i just went back to my normal schedule, then on thursday after i got home from the gym it happened again, sort of. my heart rate went up again, then my hands and face seized up, i felt like i was getting electrocuted. back at the ER, turns out it's an adrenaline/seratonin/dopamine thing, making me have some pretty severe panic attacks. now i'm on lexapro. fun stuff.  :P

so i'm still a little leary of really going nuts in the gym, maybe in a few weeks i'll be back at 100% but i'm kinda playing it by ear now.

you're hardly a pussball moving 225 off the floor like it's paper, true 225 isn't much weight for deads but you look like you still had a bunch of reps left easily.

i'd say you should give it a shot sometime, it's really weird. the first 10 or so felt like i could go all day long, but then i just hit a wall where i couldn't catch my breath any more. it's more like cardio than actual lifting, i got too tired as opposed to hitting failure.  :P

Dave,

It's the cardio giving out before the muscles. I've had many people tell me they're gassing out before muscular fatigue sets in. Practice will help. Still waiting on all those "50 reps easy" guys to STEP UP!!!

i would need CPR honestly, i have no problem admitting that i couldn't do it and i don't think Andy Bolton or Benedickt Magnusson could either, not for lack of back strength but you'd have to have the wind of a triathlon competitor to do it.

At the same time, let's be real. The reason people are gassing is in part because of the heavy weight and the stress it's putting on the entire body, causing the heart to pump faster to get the fresh blood to the bodyparts screaming for oxygen.

After all, we wouldn't see people gassing with just the 45 lb bar after 30 reps, would we?

I'm with ya on that man.  I haven't done 225 for reps in ages so don't know what I could honestly get.  If it were JUST a strength thing, that'd be one thing.  But my cardiovascular system is shit.  That's why when I squat on my drop sets, I never go above ten reps...can't afford to keel over from a heart attack when I got kids to raise.

you're right it's a combination of the two things, 225 is just enough weight to cause the stress on the body you're talking about.

if you mean pausing at the top, it doesn't help that much. on the floor would work unless you're like me and sitting with the bar on the floor makes it hard to breathe. kind of a catch-22.

i'm kinda tempted to turn this into a "225 rep three lift challenge". i hit 20 on the bench on wednesday, add in the 30 i got on the pull and i'm sure i could hit 20 or so squatting and i'd be... partway to the original 112.  ;D

no but one of the stipulations is that you have to keep your hands on the bar and that would mean you'd have to either pause at the top holding the bar or the bottom while squatting down.

one rule was that your hands had to stay on the bar, but your feet don't have to stay flat. i think next time i'll just put the bar on the floor and then just lay down on my stomach.  ;D

chimps, i asked the doc about it. he said it wouldn't kill my intensity, but that it'd up my energy. on the other hand i should be able to stop it if things go really south. plus i'm still taking the white flood on half dosage, so that's helping.

Hmmm. It's more that they trim off the excesses of highs and lows, leaving a smooth almost stoned feeling. I tried paxil a few years back and I walked around for a couple of months not giving a shit about anything. No highs, no lows, everythng was mellow -ie. no life. Also, has a nasty side-effect like the other ssri's - erections are no problem, but completion can be. End of my paxil trip.  :P

i hit 515 about a month and a half ago, but for some reason lately 495 has been giving me problems. i think i've been neglecting my lower back, if my shitty good morning numbers are anything to go by.

i'm telling you, your muscles will be fine, but it's like trying to run laps while holding a keg, it's not that heavy, you just get worn down.

MisterMagoo,

Great work!!!

It is more endurance being the problem than muscles - I'm not even sure if I could do 113 reps with the empty bar.

The next deadlifting clip I will post is 405 for reps.  We'll see what I can do, but I think it will be quite respectable.  :)

I think if people would just slow down a little they could pull off more. I'm weak as a kitten, and I'm sure I could bang out 20 no problem. I would say bang out 4 then catch 10 breaths, etc. etc. As long as your straps are fitting good, I think you'd get more done that way. Make sure to get a good bounce at the bottom.  ;D

Is the requirement strait or bent leg? I like a sloppy "semi bent leg" stance when I deadlift.

Also, has a nasty side-effect like the other ssri's - erections are no problem, but completion can be. End of my paxil trip.  :P

I like a sloppy "semi bent leg" stance when I deadlift.

i'm tellin' you man, once you get up above 15 everything changes. i'm not saying you wouldn't hit 20, just that "no problem" is gonna surprise you if you give it a go.

Good job Magoo

So you're winning - what's the prize?

I wonder how many could Chris Mason do?

So Adonis is still the champ  ::)

if mason tries it i'm jolly well fucked. the dude's done 495x10 stiff legs standing on a plate. throw some straps and a belt on him and he could probably hit 40 before his first stop to catch his wind. i'd have to try for another marathon just for 2nd.

4 cock..by the way good job.

First off, I commented on YouTube on one of Zach's George Bush clips.

I don't think MisterMagoo, colourfully referred to as "MisterMANgoo" is actually bisexual.  I think when all the nude pictures of Tom Prince came up on mayhem and they were calling Tom bi, Zach just claimed to be bi to lend his board credibility to the concept of being bi to save face for Tom.

Spread this around:

Hahahah, maybe I spoke too soon. I've definitely hit 15 reps with more weight, but I've very rarely done twenty reps on deads.

Hope you feel better, freak.  8)

you still got good response to paxil?

It is common for Ad to work very wel in the beginning, but after some time you get used to it and the benefits become smaller. Im in a dilemma with my Remeron, it is advised to take it in the evening, cause the pil literally puts you asleep, you cant do shit, but lately trough the day, the depression gets even worse, so i try to change it and take just half the pill in the morning, it does make me tired, even coffee doesnt help. What ive noticed, is that when i started using omega fish tabs, it gives the AD a turboboost, it actually makes your emdicine stronger in a good way. I wish there was a good energy booster out there that is not unhealthy, to risen the dopamine levels.

last monday i was at the gym getting ready to deadlift, my heart rate jacked up from normal to around 180bpm. then my hands went all tingly and i collapsed. was in the ER for a few hours, they said it was just a normal heart palpitation. ::)

so i just went back to my normal schedule, then on thursday after i got home from the gym it happened again, sort of. my heart rate went up again, then my hands and face seized up, i felt like i was getting electrocuted. back at the ER, turns out it's an adrenaline/seratonin/dopamine thing, making me have some pretty severe panic attacks. now i'm on lexapro. fun stuff.  :P

so i'm still a little leary of really going nuts in the gym, maybe in a few weeks i'll be back at 100% but i'm kinda playing it by ear now.

lexapro takes at least 6 weeks to kick in, did they give you benzos but regardless of that, can you tolerate the escitrolapram?

many people welcome that man, add a little stim like concerta or adderall and your laughing.  i had problems shooting my hot steamy creamy man batter too, but it went away. i had other sides i couldnt fucking tolerate though, like increased agitation and problems with the anti cholenergic effects.

lexapro is a good drug though.

thanks man. all's good now, far as i can tell, i'm just taking it a little easy.

i'm kinda tempted to turn this into a "225 rep three lift challenge". i hit 20 on the bench on wednesday, add in the 30 i got on the pull and i'm sure i could hit 20 or so squatting and i'd be... partway to the original 112.  ;D

I will be hitting 225 for 20 on the bench very soon.  8)

Kind of sad when bench and deadlift are close.  :-\  Although realistically I think by the time I hit 20 on the bench I will have at least 30 for deadlifts in me.

i hit 515 about a month and a half ago, but for some reason lately 495 has been giving me problems. i think i've been neglecting my lower back, if my shitty good morning numbers are anything to go by.

i'm telling you, your muscles will be fine, but it's like trying to run laps while holding a keg, it's not that heavy, you just get worn down.

did you watch the video? i think "barely squeeze out 30" is a little inaccurate. i hit 30 reps in a little under a minute and then my endurance shat out on me. it's not like i did 10 and then spent another five minutes hitching out the rest.

all joking and getbig bullsh*t aside I hope you get better Magoo.

nothing sucks more than a heart scare

you should really think about getting into mediatation---------you would be surprised how effective it can be...there are indian men who can literally make their heartrates slow down to extremely low rates and be locked in low oxygen chambers (where normal men would suffocate) and live.  Just an option that wont cost you anything and is benefical regardless of if it helps your problem.
