Gobama!

The Democratic race is FAR from over, though, especially when you consider the reality that Michigan and Florida will *have* to be given proper primaries.

It's BULL FUCKING SHIT that the Democratic National Committee has the authority to tell the people of a particular state, "Sorry, but your votes in the primary will not count this year".

There needs to be more public outrage over this and I'm disappointed that there hasn't been.

I have a lot of respect for Obama and would enjoy seeing a black president but most people are wowed by the feeling, the movement and his speeches.  People need to force him to speak about details to decide if his plans are what they really believe in.

If you look at some of his platforms, which are not spoken about much or criticized by the media, he believes in solving most of our problems by throwing more $ into inefficient programs and believes in bigger government, which usually does not work.  The only group of people he wants to cut taxes for are low income Americans.  He will raise taxes on the middle and upper classes.  He also wants to give driver's licences to illegal immigrants...which is just absurd.  Families making more than $70,000 beware...your taxes will go up again (and they are already way too high).  Why can't politicians on both sides see that the government spends far too much of our $!!!

They're like Starbucks - as long as we continue to pay, they will keep raising the price.

I rail against Big Government, but both the Democrats and Republicans love it, because that's what best helps them to stay in power.

I'm not sure how all that happened, but those were the rules if they moved up their primaries before Feb 6.  That is, those are "the rules" and a party has the right to make their own rules.

However, "the rules" also give Hillary the ability to take as many super-delegates as she can persuade.

Note that the Obama camp wants the first rule to apply, but not the second one.

Seems fairly safe to bet that Obama will get the nod.
I see him as president more than Hillary, I just wish I agreed with more of his platforms.

I went to his website and looked at several issues.  In the vast majority of subjects he vows to raise funding for each program.  Thats not what we need.  We need efficiency and less government spending.  I agree with him on lobbyist and strengthening global markets but sounds like he is going to waste more of our tax $ on programs that don't work well.

It's complete BS that the Democratic National Committee has the authority to tell the people of those states that their votes do not count.

I don't care who signed off on what - candidates can agree not to actively campaign in a state, but they CANNOT tell those people they won't be allowed to vote.

How many Democratic voters in MI and FL were aware that their votes would not count until the weeks just prior to the non-election?

How many citizens of those states were in agreement with that decision?

I believe I previously suggested holding another primary in FL and going with a caucus in MI.

I would like to see both campaigns come forward and offer to pay for these fair elections, because the wholesale disenfranchisement of American citizens is something I would NEVER support.

America was ready for Colin Powell, in my opinion.

To my knowledge, he never aspired to become President, but man, would he have been a great candidate, even after he took the sword for W.

I don't like his policies. A lot of his voting base is compromised of young people, and people just getting into politics, so they don't really care for the issues. Obama wants to spend more $$ when this country really can't afford to without piling up more debt.

But I guess in the long run more young people getting involved is a good thing for this country. Once they learn things and the baby boomers starting dying, things may change for the better.

Scott Alexander should be president. He'd issue an executive order calling for the reflooding of New Orleans and would give HGH to young men in need of improving their looks. Too bad Scott is a Brit.  :(

They make a big deal of being a Mormon...

Mormonism differs from other major religions in that there is a corporate think tank known as the 'Quorum of the Twelve' (led by the 'First Presidency') that seeks to guide the worldly lives of its members.  There is a direct link between the board of directors and the people who consider themselves to be 'good and faithful' members, a link far more extensive - and invasive - than you will find in most faiths.

This is not true for Catholicism, Islam, the Protestant religions, etc.

I'm all for religious tolerance, but people should be informed about what they are dealing with.

He's a moderate republican, so he might have made a good pres.  However, he sold out for Bush, so his credibility is somewhat shot.

Google "fucking crazies" and "Colin Powell" for a good laugh. It's not about his wife, it's about the Bush admin.

Are you old enough to recall the 1992 Presidential election?

It wasn't like the incumbent - Bush I - was 'unpopular', yet a solid orator from Arkansas delivered a knockout by simply repeating "economy" and "time for a change" over and over and over.

Clinton actually was very good for the economy only after summoning a group of financial guru's to the white house shortly after the election. He was told how all the change he proposed would crush the economy by sending inflation skyward ala Jimmy Carter. It was then that he moved to the center and all the "change" never happened. But the economy motored along and everyone was happy. Till the .com bubble burst.   So all this "change is alot of talk and extremely unrealistic.  But the lemmings love it.

Very true top dog.

There will not be nearly enough tax $ to dump into all these programs Obama speaks of...unless he raises taxes even higher than they already are.  I agree about having enough of the Clinton and Bush family in the white house.

What do you all think about McCain?  He is really an independent that has swayed between the two parties on various issues.  I see +s and -s.

The world is watching this election carefully. If Obama is elected, he could easily reach out to countries like UK, Germany, even France, and get them to help with stabilizing Iraq and thus fulfill his promise to "bring the troops back" in 2009.  Even a reduction in half of current troop levels overseas will free up enough revenue to more than fund his proposed programs.

I've done the math on the politics board if you're interested in breakdowns.

Guess what... he has just about outwitted the second most effective political machine of our lifetimes, the Clintons (the Bushes being #1).

He should mend this continent by deporting all white people back to Europe, take all blacks with him back to Africa and leave this nation for the Indians and their half breeds (Mexicans). They are the ones that truly lived here and owned this continent to begin with. The rest are just invaders. Invaders from Europe who performed a ruthless ethnic cleansing and holocausts of the natives.

Who honestly want to be head of this drug infested warmongering nation anyway? Without the wars and the drugs ( legal and illegal ) the economy of USA would be shot, and the nation would not exist. There will always be something sick about the legacy of USA. No one will ever have to balls to deal with it and fix it.

Despite the rhetoric, troops will be left in the middle east for security reasons.  At least McCain is honest about it.  No one is going to bring them all home.  Even Clinton has backstepped some on that promise.  There are huge American bases in Iraq and Saudia Arabia now.  That part of the world is very scary to all western nations and poses a great and ongoing threat.  I also hope we can withdraw the majority of the troops from Iraq within a year, but my guess is that we will at least retain a large base there with significant military troops for a long time.  McCain probably would withdraw some troops within a year too but to publicize it is stupid...gives military strategy to the enemy.

Tre, what the heck happened to the republicans after reagan??  Many abandon their principles when they get into office, spend and waste $ just like everyone else.

I am a moderate as well but tend to be an economic conservative....that leaves no one for me to really get behind in this election.  Obama is impressive but he is too far left with his actual ideas (which few people get to hear).

Publicizing withdrawals is necessary for the American people to know who to vote for, and for the markets to know how to respond.  I work in a business that depends on there being plenty of credit available for large corps.  That credit is slowly drying up, and I'm concerned that McCain's "bomb iran" policy will aggravate the situation.

You Reagan "republicans" who keep moaning about "increased spending" are either full of shit, or you don't know history.  Reagan was the king of deficit spending.  It more or less worked for him, and i don't see why prudent spending shouldn't work now.

Publicizing date of withdrawls in advance is ignorant military strategy.  Announce the withdrawls when the we are prepared to withdrawl.  I understand how it may help your business but that means little when we are fighting a war with lives at stake.

The gov spends too much of our $ period and people who vote for politicians that are going to increase that trend are irresponsible.  As for reagan, I was too young to understand what was going on at that time.  I'd have to look back at actual records.  The foundation of the republican party used to be constitutionalism instead of huge gov that overspends.  Traditional republican ideas make sense, not what has been going on recently in the party.

There will always be something sick about the legacy of USA. No one will ever have to balls to deal with it and fix it.
Throughout history, the more evolved and technologically advanced societies have displaced many indigenous cultures. It may be sad, but it often works that way in the Animal Kingdom as well. When Cro-Magnon man arrived, he displaced the less evolved Neanderthal Man. However, nobody needs to deport the white man back to Europe. Unchecked Third World Immigration and incredibly rampant breeding of the lowliest classes will end up displacing the White/Europeans,.. and their values and culture that this Country was founded will no longer exist...and I guess you'll be happy about that!

Colin Powell's wife is supposed to be a bigger liability than Cindy McCain. He would never have made it through a Republican primary.

Calmus, you know what is an even bigger liability?

Publicizing withdrawals is necessary for the American people to know who to vote for, and for the markets to know how to respond.  I work in a business that depends on there being plenty of credit available for large corps.  That credit is slowly drying up, and I'm concerned that McCain's "bomb iran" policy will aggravate the situation.

You Reagan "republicans" who keep moaning about "increased spending" are either full of shit, or you don't know history.  Reagan was the king of deficit spending.  It more or less worked for him, and i don't see why prudent spending shouldn't work now.

yes, it was reagan's use of the credit card and astrology that broke the soviet union and the iron curtain and it wasn't until 1994 when president clinton and the republican congress did something about it.  now we have the economy tanked by a havard MBA who also happens to be president.  i'm not sure CHANGE is what's required but perhaps SOLUTIONS would be better.

I gave my original support for Ron Paul for a variety of reasons. I am an official GOP delelgate for Bartow Co  Ga.
I won't get selected for the national convention because I don't remain 100% loyal and brainwashed to the party line.
I will wote for Sen Obama in the gen election , should he get the nomination.

The BASIC ideas of the Obama plan are pretty correct on your post, good job.
The tax plan includes individuals UNDER 70k will get a tax break , the taxes of those above 150k will be increased a bit.
Those around +/- 100k will see no change.
He will give a 4000 tax exemption credit for college tuition.
Like me  anyone who doesn't have good CPA do their taxes and have some investment property (like your house) to deduct the interest on your taxes is asking for trouble anyway.
I know tons of rednecks here in Ga, make less than me , don't have health care insurance and won't even consider voting for Obama or Hillary on the basis of "taxes" and "liberal program giveaways".
The ironic thing is they are voting against the very tax breaks and programs that would bennefit them and their kids  DIRECTYLY...go figure.
One thing I agree strongly with him on is in giving corperate tax breaks ONLY tothose companies that hire and use Americans and have their factories in THIS country .
Be reminded all these tax reforms have to pass congress, first.

Now on the illegals , I don't think they should any bennefits like drivers lecense, but that is not a big personal issue for me. Kinda like gay marriage, I could care less.

We could fund a lot of big , infra structure programs by simply pulling out of Iraq. Put that same 10 billion into a works program , to rebuild bridges and roads.
He is NOT a muslem, he is NOT terrorist. Obama NEVER was in the Sudan  Army.
He was sworn into the US senate on a BIBLE. His real dad is an African from kenya and his mother is a white lady from Kansas. He ws the first black to be selected to head the Harvard Law Review as law student.

Ok, I do think that many of the job sectors have seena na ctual decrease in job creation and and an increase in lay offs.

I am quite happy with the 3 main canidates left in the race. Right now I see Obama with the big momentum and I think he could be one of the greatest president this country ever had.

I respect Sen McCain and even voted for him in the 2000 prirmay election.
I think he would much better president than Bush and feel he would be a very competent leader for us.
I don't agree with him on the war however.

Hillary is a brilliant woman and would do some wonderful things for our economy and health care.
I don't think she could inspire people like Obama can.

In conclusion, any of the 3 would be 100 x better than "w"

There should be NO outrage at all, and I'm glad there isn't. FL an MI knew the rules of the game going in, and they defied the party order. You can't just move your primaries up to a date whenever you feel like it. Fuck em'...their delegates don't count and its their own damn fault.

Billary is already trying to steal the FL and MI delegates, but it won't work and it will make her more despised than she already is. Obama wasn't even on the ballot in MI!

I can't help but feel that a white candidate wouldn't have gotten away with it.  Are we giving him a 'knee-jerk' pass because he's black?  Or do we expect less from him because he's black, or what?

I dunno.  The Clinton political machine is just plain awesome.  Rich, powerful, and connected beyond belief.  I still think hilary will find a way to convince the delegates to choose her.

If she was unable to expose Obama as a fraud, I don't know if McCain can.  He seems to have his own problems at the moment.

Obama is like a ferrari and Hillary is like a Range Rover.  The Ferrari flashy and looks good and people ooooh and Ahhh over it but it is only for show-offs and once it rains or hits tight corners it will skid out.  Hillary is a straight up politician.  She knows her shit and what you see is what you're going to get.  No flash with her but she is reliable and can handle many situations.  It ain't so bad that she has Bill backing her.  Bill was an amazing pres.  Even with that Monica blow job mess he would have beaten Bush if he was able to run a third term.  Can you imagine that.  Gas would be still at $1.50, Iraq wouldn't be such a mess and our dollar would actually be worth a dollar.  Freaking Bush is the biggest loser this country has ever had for pres.  Fvcking idiots who voted for him.

Well said. The reality is that any of the 3 likely winners in NOV ( McCain, Obama or Hillary) the country will be 100x better off under any of them , then with Bushy.

Change, change, change......but how, how, how?  Obama has gotten a huge pass to this point. His empty promises will be exposed, the GOP will bring up the Muslim thing as his name indicates, and this will turn off Middle America more than being a Mormon or a Catholic ever has.

Careful there.

McCain has said he'll continue many Bush policies.  Many republicans consider him a "bush 3rd term".  he'll keep the war going, and likely bomb iran.  He said we'll be in iraq for 100 years.  He'll keep the bush tax cuts for the rich and the corporations.

So the war and the economy will be the same under McCain.  I don't see how that's "100 times better" than Bush.  I agree McCain is a good man - but - his policies will be very similar to Bush's in the big things - war and economy.

An Obama/Hilary ticket is where it's heading.

Might not be a bad thing.  Let Obama be the face for the world - positive force for change.  And let Hilary handle the complex things that Obama cannot.

They're practically tied heading into the convention - Hilary will be able to demand the VP seat, probably successfully.

Bringing the troops home should not give us tons of new $ to spend...remember our rapidly growing deficit.  Everyone forgets that we are nearly 10 trillion dollars in debt and it is compounding.  As Ron Paul said, we need to stop the wasteful spending.
I wish we never entered Iraq too and I hope we pull troops home soon, but transferring funds would continue our deficit spending.  Someone has to address overall spending.  We are borrowing from other governments to fund our growing deficit and continue spending.  Thats irresponsible and also affects the value of our dollar.

McCain plans to bring a large # of troops home too...he just listens to the generals more for timing and is not announcing military strategy.  When he said troops could be there 100yrs, he specifically clarified that to mean that we would have a base there with troops, just like we do in many countries.  Don't take that out of context.

I'm very surprised Obama has gotten this far with his level of experience.  I imagine its because he presents himself so well.  Clinton and McCain have impressive records and experience compared to Obama.

My guess is that he will raise taxes on everyone making over $70,000... we already have a graduated income tax where those people pay a larger % and much larger total.  We have to close the loopholes on the ultra-wealthy and large corporations...not raise taxes.  If you raise taxes on people that spend the most (the middle and upper income brackets), people will have to cut back spending which slows the economy.
I like giving incentives to American companies who stay here and hire American workers...both Obama and Clinton proposed that.

Obama came here to campaign and chose a large baptist church in the ghetto...the crowd was...interesting.  One of my friend's sons was there.  Definitely not a cross section of America.

I'll make it really simple for you.

They believe in WORKING FOR WHAT THEY HAVE.  Not ACCEPTING GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS.

Althought they are "rednecks" (don't know how that one elevated the conversation), they know that it is noth the JOB of the Federal Government to take care of them.  The job of the Feds is to provide for the National Defense.

wtf? McCain is a good man, but, look the sheer number of dem vs GOP voters in the primary vote!
2 to 1 dem to GOP. What politcla data  are you looking at to form your opinion?
Howard
Take into consideration the fact that the Republican race isn't a race at all.  McCain is gonna be the nominee.  Period.  Where's the motivation to get out and vote for someone that's had the nomination all but sewn up for a month?

When the General Election arrives, Repubs will come out of the woodwork to vote against Hillary or Obama.

Very true Triple H.  The government needs to protect our rights and protect our country.  It was never intended to give the kind of handouts and spend this much of our tax $.

The one thing I would like the government to intervene in is healthcare.  Not to run healthcare but to look out for its citizens and make sure insurance companies and drug companies are playing fairly...which they are not.

I'd rather it not be spent in Iraq either.  Cut spending overall so we can pay down this unheard of debt and stop borrowing $ from other countries.  Also, why do we give out so much $ in aid when we are 10 trillion in debt?

My guess is that he will raise taxes on everyone making over $70,000

anyone over 50k, by some accounts.

but when you consider that most people who make that much have been living fat off an inflated DOW for 6 years, it's fair.  Either that, or we can keep living large with low taxes, and wake up one day to discover the DOW at 7k.

Also, why do we give out so much $ in aid when we are 10 trillion in debt?

You pay aid money and you're allowed to set up bases in their country.  You're allowed to let your military/intel assets operate freely.  You're around to find and protect bigger opportunities.  And you can ensure no bad groups appear in the area without you knowing about them in their infancy.  Plus when you're giving a country $5 bil a year, they tend to give you the heads up on things.

I absolutely (and respectfully) disagree.  People making $50-$150,000 are the people that get hit hardest by taxes, miss most of the loopholes and fund our government spending.  Many of those people didn't come from rich families, they are common professionals that sacrificed and worked damn hard to make that $.  The government should not take 35-40% of our $!

The idea is that it'd be scaled... raise taxes by 2% for those making 50 to 70k.   raise taxes by 4% for those making 70k to 120k.  Etc etc.  The people are the top - they pay less in taxes than their secretaries do.   I'll be hit too, and it'll suck, but I'd rather take the hit now, then see a major economy crash because we didn't stop the bleeding now.

The people that make a lot of $ pay a f-ck load of taxes.  Only people or corporations that can hide their $ escape.
There is a common misconception that people that make good $ pay less taxes.  Not only do they pay way more in total dollars for the same services, they pay a greater % of their own income.  (I'm sure you know this 240, but some people don't understand our graduated system when politicians speak about taxes).  We penalyze acheivement.

For some people that finally come out of graduate school, paying off loans, sacrificed a lot and now get hit with the realization that they must pay 38% of their hard earned $90k salary/yr to taxes...thats bullshit.  That means, in reality they are making $55,000.  (this is a rough example to see real #s).

Cut spending and close corporate tax loopholes (and loopholes that the ultra-wealthy may find).

A fair tax/consumption tax is the way things should be.  Then everyone pays their share and no one can hide their $.

The poor will stop spending as much and the portfolios of the rich will drop as a result.  Remember, the poor already spend 100% of their income on rent and at walmart.  You move sales tax from 6% to 23% and they'll spend $100 less per week at walmart.

When 80 million people all spend $100 less per week, the economy dudn't feel so good.

That is true and I garee. But they are still voting against there own interests. why?
Ok first I use the term "redneck" to describe a demographic . By redneck I mean , blue collar workers that live in rural areas around the south.
By voting against their own interest I mean the following:
Many vote with taxes in mind and buy into the Bush type of neocon "fair " tax code.
What they are buying into to, is tax breaks and capitol gains perks to those that are VERY wealthy and have NOTHING to do with their personal situation.  I share much of the same interests with the rednecks in terms of econmics.
I make about 70 k per year and never have been a rich guy and come from a middle working class family.
The money is going to go somewhere and it can go to preserve and add to the wealth of the top 1% or it can go to make the life of the avg working person a little better. Basic econmics my friend.

Excellent pt and well stated.
Plus, the so called fair tax is based on consumption not stable , consistant economic triggers.
When the tax base is cyclic you can't fund basic infrastructure on a consistant steady basis.
Many grab on to that fair tax model as it sounds good until you look deeper into both the practical and ecoteric ideas of what would happen. Overall , the fair tax is a poor econmic model for continued growth of the GDP.

Not quite plagiarism when you have a relationship of exchanging these ideas with a person ::)  Nice try.  These two have a history and an acquaintanceship in this regard.  It's not the same boat as stealing someone's lines IE plagiarism... In this respect it is no different than a speechwriter. move on fool ::)

This isn't really true, those are talking points devised for the rich by the rich.  The group thats actually pays the lowest proportion of their income in taxes are at the top.  They can afford the lawyers and can afford the loophole finders (i.e., the "death tax", which affects almost nobody but is parroted by the rightas if anybody who dies will lose 1/3 of their estate).  But the loopholes are there because the rich have lobbied to create the loopholes in the first place.  The distribution of taxes paid proportionately to income is almost bell-curved, but overall it is fairly flat.  The middle class pays the most.  The poor and the rich pay the least, but the rich pay the least of all.  Look at how they are (not) taxed on capital gains.  Look at how hedge funds are not taxed like other funds.  The conservative (business) right perpetuate the flat tax movement because they know it will never pass and as long as the reform isn't possible, they continue to benefit.  It's the same dance that has been performed for centuries, but just different shoes.  Maybe it's for the better.  The libertarian right genuinely believes in it but is delusional.

If I can find the paper to show it, I'll post it.  I do remember that it was by a relatively centrist and if anything somewhat conservative group that did the analysis.  I think it was in the Atlantic Monthly.

38% of 90k isn't a lot to pay.  I think it should be 50%.

You almost certainly know more about US tax law than I since I know 0, and you're probably going to take me to school, but ^ that's true as far as I know, which is why people set up family trusts, gift the tax free maximum p.a., gift the maximum "single gift", etc.  Anyone can take advantage of existing "loopholes."  You don't have to be rich to talk to an accountant about how to minimize your tax liability and maximize what your beneficiaries will receive.

Admittedly, those who are living hand to mouth don't have enough money to worry about protecting it, but the middle and upper middle classes are generally short sighted when it comes to their money, taxes, and death, and could do a much better job of things.  It's more fun to "buy shit" tho.

Big Insurance loves Big (and confused) Government and with good reason - profits.  In order to preserve the free market system, I think the best patch right now is to allow those who want insurance to buy into a large, nationwide group plan that could be automatically administrated.  It would be like having the option of shopping at Costco instead of having no choice but to pay full retail for everything.
