Lee was at the Fitness Trade Show in Sydney. I was there checking out some of the new gym equipment. Some lads from my gym said Lee was there so I went over and caught him just before he was leaving for Newcastle, which is about 2 hours north. I introduced myself then told him I was sorry that he lost his grandfather. He appreciated that. The funeral is tomorrow.
He knew I had been arguing with Bob Chick on Getbig! So there you are.
I managed to get a photo with Lee but instead of arms folded he did the thumbs up pose just for the lads here. He said it was okay to put the photo up here. I hope to catch up with Lee before he heads back to the USA in about a month.
Perhaps we can get him to come down to see my gym and the equipment that I have made. Anyway, he was very agreeable and was signing magazines and posing for photos. Nice to finally catch up with Lee. His mates seemed to think he won't be able to compete in the IFBB this year. I never verified that with Lee.

Classic thumbs up pose, as usual.

Forearm hair like a real man!
It was a cold day in sydney today right?
-
Great pics, lees looking huge as always.
-
I take it Lee does not know you are "Hank Wood" :D
-
I asked Lee who he thought Hank Wood was. Apparently it might be someone in Canberra and not Newcastle like I guessed. So, neither of us have a clue who that person is.
It was a wet but mild day in Sydney today. A bit warm inside the Exhibition Centre.

Great job Vince. Hey I never knew you looked so good in your heyday. Congrats on that. I believe Lee is doing what he does best, bodybuilding. At the same time I actually believe he is one of the more conservative pro's when it comes to taking care of his body, he does stay ON almost all the time, but instead of criticizing, we should appreciate that he always shows up big and in decent shape. Everyone likes to see Lee big as a house but when GH15 comes here and tells us what it takes to stay that big, we start criticizing him. It's the nature of the beast.
On a different note, I am curious Vince what's your take on designing new equipment as I would like to try building a few pieces myself, mostly basic stuff...You have much more expirience than I do so I appreciate your input.

Instead of making your own gym equipment buy used stuff. There is plenty that comes on the market when gyms close or upgrade. Watch out on line or in the papers for auctions. The second hand machines go for peanuts. Trust me on that because I have equipped several gyms in the past. When some machines were offered for sale they sold for perhaps 1/10th to 1/3 of the original price. I made my machines to last for a very long time so they don't wear out except for the paint, cables and upholsery. Most gyms don't want the older stuff so you can get them for a bargain.
An example, I repurchased 3 machines I made about 20 years ago for $1000. Included were a leg extension, leg curl and a standing calf machine with an 800 pound weight stack. If you check what steel costs you will see that the calf machine costs way more than $1000 just for the materials. I sold those machines for over $10,000 when they were new.
I will see if I can find a photo of it for you.

Damm i would have gone if i knew Lee was there.
I went to the expo 7 years ago and saw Dex and Jay. Last time i went a few years ago it was pretty boring though i thought it was funny all these supposed 'fitness' people walking outside for a cigarette.
-
It is always interesting to see the mix of people who attend these trade shows. There were lots of instructors mingling around. Lots of nice girls demonstrating the machines.
I was there when Dex and Jay manned a booth together. Got a photo somewhere. I think even then Dexter felt he was better than Jay.
Here is a lovely personal trainer from Fitness First. Ellie is her name. 6'1'' really nice girl.

she is very pretty

I live in Sydney, i should have gone. I would have gone if i knew Lee was going to be there.

Excellent report, Vince. :)
/i note that not only do you have a fanny pack, it is double-strapped!? you da man! :o

lol, i noticed that too.
Though here in Aus we refer to them as "bum bags"

Have you ever been to a trade show in Hong Kong or China? I went to one in Hong Kong about 3 years ago it took me 2.5 days to see the whole thing (gift & homewares). In the exhibition centre at Darling Harbour you can see it all in an hour tops. Parking Sucks.
That's why us Sydneysiders don't really care that much about a small expo.
-
You young guys have it made. There were no co-ed gyms when I was going to university. Now you have heaps of great gals going to gyms and working in gyms.
I met Ellie on Friday while she was demonstrating some Technogym cardio machines. I struck up a conversation and she was a honey. I told her I hoped all the girls survived until Sunday and they were sore this morning. She has a boyfriend so I wasn't coming on to her. Just a lovely young woman.
The other strap is my camera bag.

I didnt even know it was on. I might have gone as i did nothing today. Probably would have caught the train instead of driving.

Bodybuilders aren't really catered to at these trade shows. You see a few muscleheads walking around. A few muscle gals, too. I like the gals who combine some muscle with curves and who have great legs.
There were all sorts of booths there that had nothing to do with lifting weights. Gyms have evolved to be heaps of different things. I get a kick out of seeing the new gimmicks each year. Sometimes I see new ideas for pieces of gym equipment. My members are always asking for new stuff. I would rather buy good equipment than have to build it. I don't copy anyone so it is a big job to design and build something new.
I swear most of the booths could have been from a different convention as far as I was concerned. The demonstrations today had nothing to do with muscle, either. Just people and kids jumping around and stretching. The public have a different perception of fitness and these companies are catering to those needs. A lot of the big equipment companies weren't there. Nautilus and Cybex were not there. A pity.

Tell Lee that a lot of us are sorry for ihs loss. I know he was very fond of his grandparents. Hopefully, we will see him on stage at th e 2009 Ironman here in Los Angeles.
-
That face tattoo is looking very light for some reason...wonder if he is in the removal process. Just wondering...
-

This is why bodybuilders are often referred to as 'muscle heads.'
Fitness incorporates many things, Vince, not just lifting weights. A man of your age, I would have thought you'd of known that.
-

Hmmmm, just saw it. Lets hope he gets rid of the useless tatoos (back, face) and leave only a few good ones (forearms and shoulder)
-

there will always be mark there, unfortunately I am guessing that Lee used traditional ink and not the kind which was created to be lasered out if needs be.

Honestly, for the IFBB what possible harm could come from allowing Lee to compete
what a total joke

Haha, love the shirt! Classic!
This one's even cooler. People think twice about messing with you with a print like this on the shirt!

hahah Vince is offically so old someone else must dress him.
-
If he is working on getting that awful cry for help tattoo off his face then it could be a sign that the miniature muscleman is finally winning the battle with his myriad mental demons.
-
He may have trouble moving that whole back Tattoo.Whoooooooooooooos h.
-
Vince I was training at your gym two weeks ago, the equipment was good the layout and parking was atrocious.
-
There is a sadness in Lee's eyes. He must be missing his grandparents terribly.
Look, Lee and i have never seen eye to eye. That may have something to do with the fact that he is a tiny 5'4".
Bottom line, Lee is in the twilight years of his career. He may be lucky and get an Olympia wild card. However, nothing will come of it!
It will be kind of creepy seeing Lee back on stage. He has become so disfigured now with all those tattoos.
I just hope he can find lasting happiness when his career finally ends!
-
Where might one purchase a similarly practical yet stylish gym waist purse? Surprised they haven't caught on.

I would fuck Ellie so silly she would not walk straight for a week!

I went to Owen Kelly's funeral today in Newcastle. I told Lee that Ron and the others sent their condolences. Owen was 83 when he died last week. He was a bloke everyone liked. Lee said some nice words about his grandfather who the kids called Da. I enjoyed meeting some of Lee's family. There was a lot of love in that service and I must say it was a very moving but wonderful occasion.
Lee said he might move back to Australia next year. He hasn't liked being away from his family and I can understand that after seeing how close they are. He said he had to stay in America for 8 years to obtain his green card. He did talk to his grandfather a couple of weeks ago. A lot of the family spoke at the funeral and it really was a nice occasion. They had a lunch afterwards and everyone hung around to talk. Lee is very open and candid about things and I respect him for his honesty and integrity.
I might post some photos on Lee's site. I don't like the disrespect so many show towards Lee and others here.
-
Now, Lee just has to grow a full beard.
-
That's not lee priest.
-
I don't like the disrespect so many show towards Lee and others here.
Vince, 'respect' is a two way street!
Lee is not above reproach for Christ sake. Get off his balls for half a second!
Over the years, Lee has made a hobby out of 'disrespecting' the IFBB. He can dish it out, but when the tables are reversed, he goes all defensive, sooky and narky. Lee can't have it both ways!
Lee must learn to lick his wounds!
Lee must learn to take criticism!
Lee must learn to take punishment when he has wronged!
Ok, Lee has now served out his term on the IFBB- sidelines for non compliace. Let's just hope that he does not screw this 'new' opportunity over!

Vince I was training at your gym two weeks ago, the equipment was good the layout and parking was atrocious.
I phoned my staff to tell them to let you train for free. Maybe I rang too late.
You probably missed our big parking lot at the back that holds over 100 cars. The layout suits our clients. I prefer to have the free weights for the men separate from the main equipment area. Aerobics, stretching, boxing and cardio have separate areas.
-
is that your daughter Vince?

where is your gym? is it in sydney?

The way the fitness scene has evolved is typical of what happens when all those pseudo experts try to make money. How on earth can silly equipment designed by some eccentric guy a century ago be popular today? I am talking about Pilates here. I see the programs on TV where spruikers claim they lose weight on those machines. Yeah, sure. Then I look at the alternative medicine crap that is involved. These people contribute almost nothing to the fitness scene yet find suckers to buy their products. Several companies were demonstrating vibration machines. I thought those disappeared forever about 30 years ago. Nope, still around today and some cost $10,000 or more. Whatever is standing on vibrating machines supposed to do for fitness?
Bodybuilding enthusiasts have always believed a lot of nonsense about training and nutrition and that is why so many supplement companies prosper. These companies aren't necessary but muscleheads keep buying that stuff. Magazines survive on ads from supplement companies.
Bodybuilding simply doesn't register in the seminars offerred to fitness instructors and other professionals at these conventions. They don't mention bodybuilding but call it resistance training. I always feared this would happen when people who were not bodybuilders took over the fitness scene. Now we have regulations in place that specify what instructors have to do. Some of the smart people got in early on fitness committees and put their ideas into legislation. Now everyone has to do yearly courses run by self-interested professionals just to keep their registration. I would prefer if instructors actually knew something about hypertrophy.

Yes, I have a big, well equipped gym. I also have some machines at the factory. That isn't sufficient to motivate me to train. When I go to my gym I have to check equipment and then talk to staff and members. There is little time to train. I honestly don't have the energy much of the time. Training seems to be a chore instead of a pleasant thing to do.
I have found over the decades than unless I am persistent and keep training then gains won't stay. It then becomes rather pointless to train unless a commitment to keep it up is there.
Hank reveals no evidence that he lifts weights so what gives him the moral authority to bag anyone here on Getbig? He likes to poke fun at people and challenge them about things. How easy is it for anonymous guys who can say what they like and who are responsible to no one. I don't respect cowards on the internet. What should be an amazing place to interact has evolved into a cesspool where dickheads proliferate and have a platform. Getbig is one of the worst forums and the result is few pros or intelligent bodybuilders post here. Well, I forgot that Goodrum claims to have an IQ of 131. That is why in one year he went from needing coupons to get meals at Las Vegas to being able to afford a new Mercedes!
I spend time here because it is a challenge to avoid being tarred and feathered by the flotsam and netstalkers. Instead of writing for magazines I prefer to write my articles and publish them here. That is what I think of the magazines and the whole scene. We deserve what we get and we get what we deserve.
Where else on line can you post a photo of a lovely girl and before long some jerk will post that he would bang her? There is absolutely no way I would post photos of my daughters here at Getbig.

I am not totally convinced on Vibration Machines...but NASA has done alot with it.

Why is he autographing "Musclemags" when he just signed with MD??
don't let Steve see that photo!! :o

Lee will 'sign' any God damn magazine that he wants to! No one tells Lee what he can, and can't do!
Lee does it all for the fans! Never forget that!
Lee is a rebel.
He would hoping that Blechman sees these photos. Of course Blechman will be angry! Afterall, Lee has signed with MD and at the first opportunity he is signing MuscleMags.
Lee, be careful what you do behind Blechman's back! Remember when you gave 'the bird' that time?
Be careful Lee, you don't want to jeopardize another contract!

hank wood believes in "God".

Vince B, I find it a bit creepy that you attend someone's funeral that you haven't met before, those occasions should be left for friends and family of the deceased not someone who met a relative (Lee) for the first time the day before ... There must've been relations whispering amongst themselves "who's the dude with the dog t-shirt"... just my opinion.
-
bloated and sweaty
Both of them.
-
Why should anyone be limited from attending a funeral who wants to support someone who is there? Funerals are for the living. Ron told me to tell Lee that many on Getbig were sending condolences to him for the loss of his grandfather. I have read about how close Lee was to his family and especially his grandparents who helped bring him up. I am glad I was there to support Lee. There were no other bodybuilders at the funeral. I was moved by how close the family is and how his grandfather accepted people and tried to help everyone. He didn't mind kids crying at funerals because he loved kids. Owen was an ordinary bloke but he was a very good one. I can now understand why Lee is the way he is. His folk didn't need tricks and subterfuge but said what was on their minds. These are straight forward, decent folk and Lee must feel out of place in Las Vegas where so much is fake. No wonder he is disgusted with the way bodybuilding is run. I agree.
After the funeral everyone got together and it was a warm occasion. I felt accepted there and talked to people and took some photos for Lee. He has a good heart and I respect him as a person. It was a privilege to be there and I don't regret it at all. Those are good people and they wouldn't turn anyone away who wanted to be there. There was a lot of love there and it poured out of the people who spoke about Owen.
I haven't posted too much about the funeral because of the lads here who are rather uncivil when it comes to sensitive things like that.

Vince, what business is it of yours to go to a funeral of someone you have never met in your life?
Was it out of respect for Lee? I call bullshit! You are 'stalker' material.
Vince, you lurked around at that exhibition just so you could see Lee. And then you invite yourself to his grandfather's funeral. That is such in 'badtaste'.
Going to a funeral of someone you do not know, just so you can take photos of Lee and his greiving family. You are a leach Basile. An insidious, sickening, prying blood sucking leach!
-
Hank, you are a vicious person. So righteous yet so invisible.
I got to know Lee through his posts on Getbig. Then I read about his bio. I also heard about him from two of my gym members who went to see him and get advice, etc. I relate to Lee because I, too, am an individualist who has copped plenty of injustice in my career. I admire the way Lee speaks his mind and he deserves to get support from others in this sport.
I so dislike funerals but at the last minute thought I should go and support Lee and relate what Ron posted about sending condolences. Where were all those who knew him through bodybuilding? I wondered about attending but Lee made me feel welcome so I stayed. Simple as that. He said it was okay to take photos for him. He is a good bloke and I was glad I went. What does longevity have to do with respect or friendship? It is true I knew him in person for a total of about 5 minutes before the funeral.
In this case I felt I did a good thing and will let Lee tell me if it was inappropriate.
-
OK, you are very honest and candid in your response. It prompted me to remove a similar post i just made on the 'bitterness thread'.
Yes, i was harsh in my criticism when i learnt you went to this man's funeral. At the time it just reeked on 'cashing in' on Lee. Now though, it appears that your heart was in the right place.
Vince, you are an eccentric personality. You wear your heart on your sleeve and that is what makes you one of the true 'getbig characters'.
Peace.
-
I wrote to Lee and apologized if I wasn't welcome there. I doubt Owen would have minded. The stories I heard about him made me respect and admire the guy. Lee is a chip off that block and it was great to see the sensitive side of Lee who spoke with much feeling after losing his cherished grandfather. He lost his grandmother about 5 months ago so it was doubly hard to lose Owen.
-
I wrote to Lee and apologized if I wasn't welcome there.
Were you invited by a family member/friend?
-
I swear Basile..you get creepier all the time.

It was nice of Vince to pass on his condolences, but going to the funeral was a bit too much. Still, Vince was just trying to show support to Lee and his family.

Funerals and weddings are intimate settings, reserved for friends, family and loved ones...you know...INVITED only. If he wanted to show support, write him an email. I'm sure Lee felt supported and consoled by a guy he doesn't know...
Basile gives me the heebie jeebies
-
I can appreciate if Vince went to support Lee but from the post Vince made there wasn't any shortage of real friends or family there. If family was scarce I could understand Vince making up the numbers by attending. I could imagine Lee introducing a camera toting Vince.. "Aunt Dorothy this is Vince a gym owner from Sydney (4hrs away from Newcastle) who posts on getbig..you know the internet?"
-

Yep, definietly agree with you. Im sure he meant no harm, but basically an internet friend attented a funeral of a man he never met. Bit weird...
-
Look, as i stated earlier Vince is an eccentric character. Getbig has become his family. Turning up to the funeral is what family do, albeit 'an internet family'.
Showing up, uninvited, with camera in hand to the funeral of a grandfather that is related to an x-Pro (Lee; he use to post here) is unusual and out of the ordinary.
In summary, Vince believes in his mind he is 'related' because he is part of the Getbig-family! And yes, family is family!
-
He won't recover.
-
While I respect that one needs an invitation to attend a wedding I have never felt that funeral services needed any such thing. Anyone who wants to show their respects to the departed can attend.
Trust the lads here to make an issue out of a very sensitive and sad occasion.
-
Personally, I don't think that Vince Basile's attendance at the funeral sounds inappropriate.
-

One of the stupidest things i have EVER heard.
Anyone can attend?! well i don't know aboput you Vince, but if i was at a funeral of a loved one, i wouldnt want some random off the street to attend. Funerals are very intimate times, reserved for close friends and family.
anyone can attend ::) fuck your stupid
-
Basile, are you that arrogant in your views that you cannot see that Owen's funerals is not an opportunity for you to exploit? How insensitive and opportunistic you are!
Basile, you should be viewed as nothing more than an 'anonymous internet troll' who has a fixation on that c-grade-celebrity-Lee.
Vince, did you know that the term paparazzi directly translates to 'mosquito', a blood sucking irritant. That is how you should be viewed by Lee's family; a leech, hanger-on and one who exploits the generosity of others!

haha, its so fun so see all of this!!! all of this 'internet tough guy' persona, and im pretty sure you stay every night in your bed thinking about lee and masturbating yourself...Epic 'old syndrome' of attacking someone you like just to get attention since you would not get any if you didnt do it this way...
you know, its ok to say that you are gay and you like him 'in other ways'.
monster stalking ;D

Tell Lee that a lot of us are sorry for ihs loss. I know he was very fond of his grandparents. Hopefully, we will see him on stage at th e 2009 Ironman here in Los Angeles.
Hey Ron, Lee already mentioned if he is allowed back he won't do the IronMan (already won it) and would probably do the Arnold.

LOL, now that is showing respect!
This guy is just plain creepy. :-\

I am glad I was there to support Lee. There were no other bodybuilders at the funeral.
I guess he was the only one

I have a feeling...When Joe Weider passes....Vince will be on an airplane.

Just received a reply from Lee Priest and I feel good about going to the funeral. I can't believe some of the haters here. It was a lot different at the funeral and I was accepted there and it brought back memories of my Dad who was a battler like Lee's grandfather Owen. There was a lot of love there and that family was wonderful to be with. I don't normally post emails on the net but this one is okay as it is appropriate to the occasion here.
"HI DONT WORRY WHAT THE YSAY ON GETBIG....THANK YOU FOR COMING...... MY GRANDFATHER WOULD OF LOVED IT AS HE WELCOMED EVERYONE..........SO THANKS AGAIN FOR COMING AND SHOWING RESPECT .....AND THANKS FOR THE PICS....JOE AND HIS FRIEND COMING TO VISIT ME ON FRIDAY....
KEEP IN TOUCH
LEE"

Anyone who wants to show their respects to the departed can attend.
Trust the lads here to make an issue out of a very sensitive and sad occasion.
Not if the family doesn't want you there, if you were invited....it would be acceptable, if you invited yourself.......it's fucking creepy and you should check yourself into a mental hospital
