i usually do approx 18sets. iv'e always felt that could pound on that complex muscle group. overtraining back would be difficult in my opinion
-
I did 10 sets:
Four sets of deadlifts (I got 315 for 15 on the second set today so it was a good day).
Four sets on the Icarian row machine: http://www.buyfitnessonline.com/catalog/images/CYBEX_Dual_Axis_Row_Rear_Delt___.jpg
Two sets of incline dumbbell rows.
Although I'm not really a good person to ask about training advice. Then again to be honest, I think my lack of gains is related to diet and not training. I would say my training is sound for the most part, but I need to get the calories up.

if your diet was poor your strength would not have gone up as much as it has.

I just say do two width exercises and two rowing movments. The sets and reps matter on what type of training you prefer.
But generally I think 10-12 sets is enough.
-
my ideea of back is pulling movements for lats and rowing for middle and traps...and hyperextensions..I don't see the need for deadlifts..and another thing....I believe in moderate weights for back to realy feel it because going too heavy will involve the arms too much.
-
does anyone here still incorporate T bar rows. they seem to really hit the entire back. i love that exercise
-
I did 27 sets last time.
-
bluto i don't know if your serious but i was in the 20 range and my elbows were killing me for a few weeks. no doubt i needed a little layoff
-
its usually around 20-25 sets
6-7 different different exercises.
-

yep. i love them to. i do them like Jay Cutler and Ronnie. With a barbell and hooking on a close grip handle bar.
-

For hypertrophy I believe you need a lot of sets.

Are you in Gym 4 hour or something?

Agree. Did this yesterday, then 6 sets for traps.
-
10-12 when cutting, at least 20 when bulking.
-

back doesnt take so long maybe 1-1,5 hour? i rest 90 seconds between sets
-
Volume in the key for bodybuilding (training).
-
12-15 sets max
Deadlifts x 3
Chins x 3
Rows x 3
Pullovers x 3
This is working sets only...
8)
-
five sets X five exercises. No deadlifts, I'm an old guy with bad back.
-
back n chest today total 18 sets for back
Superset
pec dec 3 sets
pull overs 3 sets
superset
one arm cable rows 3 sets
stiff arm lat pull downs 3 sets
pull downs behind the neck 2 sets
reverse grip pull downs 2 sets
seated cable rows 2 sets
weighted hyperextensions 3 sets
-

Better than any other rowing motion IMO.
If your sets are intense you really don't need more than 9-12 sets of upper back excluding warmup, other than when cutting before a contest. Chose a pulldown/chin motion, one row, one pullover per workout, can always rotate other exercise in and out over time.
-
3-4 Pulldowns
3-4 BB Rows
3 Nautilus Pullover
3 Deadlifts
This includes the warm up set.
-
18 sets
-
For hypertrophy I believe you need a lot of sets.
you are not training hard enough
if you need to do 27 sets
i would be suprised if you have done 27 sets total in your whole life

i train harder than most. lots of sets are needed for hypertrophy.

T-bars, and to a lessor extent barbell rows, is IMO the best overall Back Builder.
18 sets
This is a good number. The back is comprised of 10-12 different muscles, so it is much more complex than say the chest (pec major, pec minor), legs (6 major muscles), calves (2 major muscles), biceps (3 major muscles), delts (one muscle-3 heads).
18- 20-22 sets is a must to really hit everything in the back.
five sets X five exercises. No deadlifts, I'm an old guy with bad back.
I usually do 5 exercises, but only average 4 sets per exercise........
back doesnt take so long maybe 1-1,5 hour? i rest 90 seconds between sets
I am done in 40 minutes........very short rest times....

You've got be pretty naive to think he actually built that back training HIT.
-
You've got be pretty naive to think he actually built that back training HIT.
HIT is shit, no one gets big that way.
-
Volume in the key for bodybuilding (training).
I agree with that. Of course you'll always have a dorian who can do 6 sets and inject a gallon of insulin and grow. But for most people, high number of sets seem to work best.
Brutal 240 back width
-
You've got be pretty naive to think he actually built that back training HIT.
i don't
however 27 sets is too much especially if you are natural
unless you lift like a bitch
-

EXACTLY!!

I never said "27" sets.
-
You've got be pretty naive to think he actually built that back training HIT.
Dorian used a **modified*** HIT system, which was 6-8 sets total. Could easily work.
If you recall Mike Mentzer's HIT was ONE SET per body part 3x a week, 30 minutes each work out. That is the stupidest shit I ever heard-but 8 sets is doable in HIT.
-
EXACTLY!!
really, you hate low volume training ?
I dont know why but I tought the opposite
-
I never said "27" sets.
i never advocated hit
dorian never trained hit
hit is mentzer one set per body part which is bullshit
10 to 12 sets per bodypart is plenty if you lift hard
-

yeah 10-12 is definitely enough if you're training hard enough.
-

x3....yep-plenty!
-
no
say you use 5x5 protocol and do 4 exercises for back thats 20 sets
maybe you wanna throw some back extensions in there. that's another 3 sets.
stop training like pussies ! "oh its enouigh oh its enough"
it's never enough !
NEVER
NEVER EVER

This is how I do it in Timesquare. I use wrist wraps and a weight belt. Always the same exercises but always different order. Twice every ten days?
3-4X jackhammer rows. (bent rows with dumbells) Then 1X one arm row with the 150# each side.
6X deadlifts
6X bent rows
6X close grip Ronnie rows in the corner
4-5x hyperextensions with no weight
always the finale is pull ups. as many as I can do. as many sets until I call it a day. Like 3 or 4 sets?
So I guess the answer to the question is around 25 sets.
sounds good to me
i bet the back begs for mercy after that one !!!
MIGHTY BACK !!!!
MIGHTY BACK !!!
AAAAAAARGH!!!
LET'S SEE THAT CHRISTMAS TREE !!!!!!!!!!!

I think we should do a 315 for reps deadlift challenge!

hahaha this from the guy who claims 20 inch natural guns but firstly refuses to post a pic. then says he doesn't have a camera. then says his buddy has one. then says he took one but it came out too small.
ahahahahahahahahahahhaha ahahahahahhaahhahahaha ;D ;D ;D

hahaha agree totally, those doing high sets are cruising thru most of em. Moderate sets with high intensity, lower sets with insane instensity or coast doing high volume.
-
really, you hate low volume training ?
I dont know why but I tought the opposite
For bodybuilding purposes, low volume or "HIT" is useless for hypertrophy.
-

If I recall, both of there training methods were low reps like in the 3-6 range or less. Not condusive for bbing purposes, and before you say "well it worked for Dorian and Mentzer", take into consideration any type of training works when on gear.

Now thats a good routien for hypertrophy. The only thing I'd do differently is low back on a leg day.

Thanks, how would you break up quads? Infact, could you write me a program when you get some time? I need something new.....I like to work on a 2 day on, one day off split.
-
Here are some guidelines I have posted on numerous occations;
Power - 1-3 reps
Strength - 5-8 reps
Hypertrophy - 8-12
Anything more than 15-20 goes into muscular endurance

I'll take whatever you have the time to write out.... I need a new split in general..... I have been training the same way for years. I would consider myself an advanced trainer ( not by getbig standards of course).

I know what your saying, I have been training for a little over 12 years....Tried a lot of things, worked with a national level guy, when I was delusional about bb. I'm on a charity kick tonight, any new training advice would be appreciated. My workouts are stagnant, and I'm sick of reading!

how much time do you get biggers spent on width exercises, sets, rep range, failure every set? iv'e tried to stay focused on 3 exercises regarding width, pull downs, smith machine pulldowns, t bar rows wide grip.
