Title: In the gym strongman training...
Post by: chris_mason on November 27, 2008, 09:33:35 AM
I thought some of you would be interested in this.  The trainee is Tom Mutaffis, one of our strongman competitors.  He uses some interesting "complexes" as he calls them in his gym training.  I think these would be of interest to anyone looking for increased size, strength, and muscular endurance.  A nice change from the typical routine:

Of course not nearly as strong, but here is one of my LaCrosse players doing an in season circuit. 9 exercises, little if no rest between stations, 3-4 rounds. Last night I took a video of this kid (16 years old) doing a 46" box jump. I'll upload in a couple of hours.

This routine I designed to help keep offseason strength, muscular endurance and conditioning. I have several versions of similar routines.

that is pretty impressive, i especially liked the push presses.  is there a reason he is using only 215lbs on the rows, seems like not too much considering the weight he is handling on the other exercises.

Why don't you get a video of real athletes being trained like Rampage? No one wants to see some 16 year old twink lifting small girly weights.

Rampage is in England with Bisping right now, the bald dude in the blue shorts is Dave Roberts ( contender in Ultimate fighter 7) Rampages best friend and sparring partner, the black kid is Josh Gaskins (7-1-0), who Rampage and myself is helping to sponser, the mexican dude, is their boxing coach. Josh and the boxing trainer are flipping together because Josh just had meniscus surgery a couple of months ago.

Forget about it.  Think of all of the trolls on this site.  They are basically 80% of the posts.  Ron has allowed idiots to post here since the site's inception.  He allows rascism, the posting of horrible attacks on others, and so many other things I can't even remember.  He could have a great site, but through his decision to allow this crap he has dramatically reduced its quality.

So, long story short, don't look for AXA to get banned any time soon.

Yeah, he's an amazing actor. BTW, I don't know how you PT so much, The Coach. I've done fitness instructing / personal training part-time and while I loved it most of the time (esp. PT with good clients who loved being pushed), I could never do it full-time. Just incredibly draining mentally and physically.

He does and I do, but if you can advertise for free to cut overhead or meet a budget, then it's worth. It's business. He does newsletters and I do newsletters......again, free advertising. I guaranty we both get more business than critisism.

A box jump like this is a good test of explosivness, it's an indication of speed and quickness and power. One of the tests in an NFL combine is the veritcal leap.

All this "complex" circuit training shit makes me laugh...

I'm not gonna lie I go suckered in to training like this for a while too...I mean something so crazy has got to give you gains right?

The basic gimmick is make things so confusing and changing week to week that you can't measure your own progress and the guy that makes the wacky program is supposedly justifying his paycheck...

Newsflash: If you want to be big you have to lift heavy.  The best way to lift heavy is to do heavy sets, catch your breath in between sets and get enough nutrition before and after the workout.  No PT required.

QFT. FTW.

Much wisdom in this simple statement. If you aren't doing this, you are wasting time.

So you think it's that simple? It's a flawed statement in the way threre are no sets or reps mentioned. Or you are you HIT type of people that thinks HIT gets you big? Give me set and rep range and rest time.

Results comes from hard work and nutrition...not some wacky new way to do pushup or some new exercise invented by charles glass on swiss balls.

6-10 reps per exercise; total sets and rest time can vary by individual.  I rest about 90 to 120 seconds per exercise; should be enough that you could do your last lift at the same weight without losing more than a couple reps. Increase the weight every set; 3 to 4 sets per exercise 8-15 sets depending on bodypart, nutrition etc.

Pretty simple stuff...

Actually they are not gimmicks, they are proven methods of training. It depends on what you are training for. If you understand why this person in that video is training the way he's training, then it make sense. In most cases my strength protocol for athletes always starts with a power exercise as a single exercise after that I go to a pair (superset) of 2 large muscle group after that I go to a tri-set of 3 muscle groups. The more motor units recruited in an exercise, the faster you get stronger as well as improve conditioning. This is a proven method of strength training. So the it makes total sense to train the way that guy did in Chris' video. In strongman, you obviosely need strength, but you need athetisism as well as a great deal of conditioning.

What training style do you follow? I agree that some overly complex programs may not be worthwhile for certain individuals; but for an advanced trainee who is looking for a balance of hypertrophy, strength, and conditioning then these programs work extremely well.

I am curious as to what you consider heavy? The heaviest dumbells in that gym were 145 lbs and that is what I was using for the incline dumbell presses. The deadlifts were done with 565 lbs and 645 lbs respectively, at a bodyweight of 220 lbs (drug free).

These programs are not for everyone, but they are effective when utilized properly. I have recently published an article on the topic if you are interested in seeing additional applications and how the programs are formulated.

I think he may have been commenting on the lacrosse training video.

I agree what you say though. Plus, it was always stated that you were strongman training.

That could be; I know that there were some comments directed at the other video that were mixed in. The post that I replied to did seem to be more directed at commercial trainers who come up with unique exercises to justify their services.

Just wanted to make sure that people did not think that my style of training was not valuable for those who are looking for a balanced physique (athletic performance, strength, body composition, hypertrophy). Complexes are a great way for powerlifters to add in conditioning, for bodybuilders to fully exhaust their muscles, or for athletes to increase time under tension.
