This guy doesn't do any rowing at all, even if he did rowing machines his back would improve.  He needs help.

Imagine how his back would improve if he ever touched a heavy barbell.

It was a joke, I don't thing my back is anywhere near pro level. The point was his back looks like shit and he is now a pro! I do have a lotta width but been working on thickness more for the past 6 months with more deadlifts and row emphasis. I'm prepping for a competition in March, will be posting pics for sure then.

muscle contraction = muscle contraction... no such thing as a 'mass movement'... only reason people think that is because they dont use the same kind of intensit on 'shaping movements' that they use on 'mass movements'...... again , muscle contraction = muscle contraction...   (eccentric or concentric)

the best kind of contraction for hypertrophy is a contraction in which you reach failure after 8-12 reps..   this shit is kind of like..VERY VERY SIMPLE..

i didnt say that...if you want to train chest then pick a few movements that uses chest...bench, incline becnh, decline bench, db bench, db incline bench, db decline bench, flys, incline flys, decline flys, machine press, machine incline press, machine decline press, machien flys, cable cross overs from the top, cable crossovers from the bottom...etc etc etc...preferably one incline one decline and one flat..

you clarified yourself.  Seriously though the decline stuff is a waste of time.  Dips are much better for lower, outer chest development.  Three pressing movements is a bit much too.

i normally do two pressing movements ..incline first then flat..then i do two isolation movements.. cable crossovers from the top then cable crossovers from the bottom....i think cable corssovers from the top = a decline movement..

If it's simple why does your back look like that?  I still can't believe you think deads aren't important for back thickness.

I agree with this statement OUTSIDE of bread and butter exercises but that is about it. Some movements are absolutely needed to realize genetic potential in my honest opinion. To each his own though. If you are getting results then you are getting results. This is my back completely relaxed. No, not OMG thick but what do you expect from a natty?

all the comments made about not needing deadlifts or rows must come from our very inexperienced brothers... with out one or both of the above u will never grow any decent thickness in your back, and thats a fact!..all the pics posted have pretty much backed up that statement too...

certain exercises recruit more muscle fibers plain and simple. Rows recruit more fibers then pulldown, front squats activate the quads more.

EEG studies have been done which show that certain movements do this. Bench is better then hammer strength for example.

3. Bent Over Rows Underhand Grip
4. T-bar Rows in the corner

or this?

IIRC, once you reach failure, all the fibers in the muscle are being activated, regardless of exercise.

changes up all the time.. traon on "instinct"..but last back workout was this..=

-superset pulldowns and straight arm pulldowns pyrmid up with 10 total sets (5 each)
-db rows pyramid up 5 sets total
-seated cable rows pyramid up 5 sets total
-superset straight arm pull downs and pulldowns and going to failure on each set (pyramid down in weight) with 10 total sets (5 each)

normally i like to do somethign like that with everyworkout...start and finish with the same thing..always an iso kind of movement..

Hmm, maybe I should have been more specific...

I am a believer in the effectiveness of deads and was hoping to give some kind of support to the exercise. Just keep in mind I'm not a mass monster (obviously) but figured I would go ahead and get the pic out of the way since it was unavoidable a call-out would be forthcoming. The pics cand posted seem to be natural and so am I so I thought the comparison was worthy.

edit: Yeah, people obviously didn't understand the "bread and butter" comment in my original post, or didn't read it thoroughly to begin with.

tl;dr DEADLIFTS R GEWD

Coming off the Nationals I have backed off heavy training for the next couple of weeks until I begin my official off-season after the holidays.  In other words, my training now is basically to stimulate the fibers and get some muscle activation going on.  I'm only training Mon, Wed, Fri, & Sat right now.  In regards to back I'm using this time to experiment with feeling out some upper back and lat stretching movements.

What ever you say, your back is very faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaar from the standard of pro.
Even I(Shitty natural amateur like me) am wider than you. Just go back to the basic and train extra hard.
Forget those small tricks(stimulate fiber only....brah brah) and just train extra super hard. No more excuse.

Why wouldn't it be?

Could you post a comparison pic of a pro who built his "lower lats" up? Never seen it happen myself.

Peter's current shape = the shape he will always have. And back will always be relatively weak, no matter what he does. His back isn't weak because he neglects it.

I'd bet Peter's been prioritizing his back for years now. It's not like he needs people to tell him it's weak.

I thought pros should have figured out what exercises work best for them by the time they get their cards?

anyways, your wife is hot  ;D

Yes she is.

You're body is adaptive and training protocols constantly need to be tweaked and adjusted.  It's about improving.  The day you quit learning about your own body is the day your not making progress.

It's not my strongest bodypart, but again time and maturity will be imporant for me in the years to come.  My back is relatively untrained in comparison to my other bodyparts that were focused on from football and early years of training.  Genetics lended me my legs.  My focus is on the upper back thickness and detail.  In a rear relaxed shot I am solid when I remember to pull out my left lat! ;)  It's important to keep the waist small and not do anything to alter that.

Maturity........ Before talking about maturity, why dont you shed those extra pound of water? Its not the matter of maturity. If you dont go down the weight at least 8lbs, you wont look like granny Yates.
If you enter the europe championship, you will be dead last with that condition.

I think declines are better than inclines. Inclines are shit, that's why pecs are so crappy nowadays, no one does flat or decline presses. And, flat presses are better for upper pecs than inclines, declines probably too!

A LOT of guys and pros would disagree with that...  ???

I dont know, you tell me..

I keep hearing that !
Phil hernon was saying the same thing also.

he said he had a movement that was good for the illusion of better upper pec, I don't know what he meant by that

Yeah I know most of them would disagree. But take a look at the upper pecs of pros who never do any flat work and mainly do incline and compare to those who do plenty of flat and decline work.
