Title: About running
Post by: EL Mariachi on February 22, 2009, 10:18:12 AM
Im eating atleast one junk meal a day, eating whatever i want and a lot lately, didnt gain any fat at all, look to be even leaner, just 2 times a week running for a hour. Riciculous change in metabolism, and i enjoy running outside. First time i run everything hurt, for a couple of days, second time didnt feel a thing. And i smoke a lot, conclusion start running.

2 more weeks then it is time for me to start leaning up which means i'll start running. I hate it, but probably because i used to run cross country so i am always pushing myself till the point of puking.

Running is great if you can do it (a lot of people are too heavy for their joints to handle it) and it does help you melt a lot of fat. From the cardio / fat burning point of view though, swimming is better cause it takes you longer to cover a given distance by swimming than by running, not to mention you involve your whole body and it's a non-impact activity.

That's a bizarre conclusion that swimming is better because it takes longer for the same distance, that makes no sense.

Swimming is better and is arguably the best all-round exercise plus is much easier on the joints but i'll take running for fat loss anyday. Alot of us can't run now though because it's hard on the joints and shins. Swimming will get rid of much of the extra fat but won't get you lean.

I meant in terms of the total energy expenditure, which translates to more calories being burned for covering the given distance. Again, only speaking in the context of doing the activity to burn off as many calories as possible (to get leaner).

Swimming's considered by many to be less effective for fat loss, in part at least because the temperature of the water affects metabolism and makes the body retain fat. Whatever the reason is, I think there's truth to it, comparing physiques of swimmers (smooth as hell) to runners. Swimming will get rid of most of the fat but doesn't seem to get most lean.

That's separate from what is the best overall exercise, swimming is better by far and is much easier on the joints.

I think you need to focus on time rather than distance. Pretty sure you burn more calories/minute while swimming than running.

hmm im not talking about the fat loss during a 1 hour run, im talking about the shift in metabolism, and the abilty to eat a lot more food without gaining any fat.

Interesting point about the water temperature and the fat retention - true, the difference in leanness between swimmers and runners could be more than correlation. I'd like to see more on the part about the water affecting the body that way under varying conditions (eg heated pool vs swimming in the ocean).

I think you need to focus on time rather than distance. Pretty sure you burn more calories/minute while swimming than running.

Wouldn't know - I never do Cardio (unless scratching myself occasionally counts) ;D

Big fan or running here.  Most getbig permabulkers will tell you it's bad but unless you are doing marathon like distances, it should benefit you greatly without burning off muscle.

Did anyone here see Eastbound and Down on HBO last week. It was hilarious. My favorite part was when the guy goes I've been training for a triathlon so i've been doing a lot of running, biking and swimming, but you know all about that. And the main character responds No i don't I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising. It is funny because it is true.

Yep. I can't run. I get really bad shin splints. If I go on a 30 minute run my tibialis anterior will be killing me for almost a week. I've resorted to the cross trainer in the gym  :-\

Try getting proper running shoes. I thought i had developed shin splints but it turned out the culprit was my shoes. A new pair of Nikes solved that problem

running is a far superior in burning fat, but swimming is kind of subjective and depends on how HARD you swim.  People who can swim VERY WELL but take their own sweet time covering 20 laps in a relaxed pace is going to burn much less fats/calories than some beginner swimmer who struggles to make even a lap but goes for 20 .

Unless you go ALL OUT in your swims while covering the same distance in a run, running always wins in burning cal/fat

swimming is the best overall form of cardio because its a full body excersize, it retains muscle better than running, and most importantly it is harmless on the joints, any bodytype/weight person can swim to lose wieght effectively since they cant run.

latley ive been jogging...gotta say doing cardio in some form just makes you feel so much healthier plus you can eat whatever the hell you want

No, swimmers have higher bodyfat because water is a better at leading heat away from your body than air is. Therefor your body will try to protect itself from loosing too much heat by holding on to a little bit of extra subcutanous fat. This fat serves as insulating and helps keep the heat inside your body. This is usually not a problem if you swim very seldom but if you swim veru often and want to look ripped I would start to exercise out of the water.

I don't like to do it at first but nothing will shred the fat like the running. After a few week when it not so terrible it become enjoyable a bit. I don't do it now though as it just kill my joints all the time. I too much muscle these days but you can get very similar effect by brisk walk and I do this every day. but walk at a brisk pace, not slouch.

You're guessing that this is the only reason, i don't believe that at all. As i mentioned there are several theories but the main thing is you'll lose extra fat and won't be big but also won't be lean from swimming.

Even top shorter distance swimmers do not have much definition. You'll definitely get in shape swimming and lose alot of fat but won't get that last degree of leaness IMO.

Depends on the distance. Elite sprinters and middle-distance runners look quite healthy & muscular, and are fairly cut.

True, long distance runners are sickly.  800m and under usually have plenty of muscle.  The female track sprinters I knew in college were more muscular and cut than their male counterparts.

That chick is sexy as hell.

No way I'm jogging at 240 lbs.  Hello Eliptical machine.
If you do Tabata you should be fine at your weight.  If you go fast enough you will be done quick and will be spent.  Another good one is 2:1 run to recovery.  Run 200m and rest 100m.  You can use this for any distance but on a treadmill I wouldn't go over 800m run.

The last time I ran the wind pulled a kite out of my hands

WTF....I can't stop laughing at that.  Maybe because I can't see your big ass running around with a kite...hahaha

I "do" interval sprints on occasion, it's not a regular thing. fucking cold outside

Not very scientific about it at all, i just run as fast as I can  until I'm burned, rest for a few and do it again.

If it's cold, do it on the treadmill.  Seriously, you'll have Alex23 and Quakeroats making fun of your abs in no time.   ;D

Seriously though, Tabata works out to be a 4 minute work out and it's hard.
