Title: NEVER feeling rested?
Post by: spinnis on February 23, 2009, 05:06:27 AM
Ok so, I never feel rested, it doesnt matter for how long or short I sleep, if I sleep 10 hours or 5 hours I feel exactly the same when I wake up = Like I haven't slept at all.

First thought is insomnia etc etc.
But my problem is , when I try to sleep I can fall asleep pretty quick, But I never get the urge to go and sleep, I feel as tired 10 in the "night" as I do 3 in the morning..
But I can fall asleep when I lay down and try to.

Anyone have the same problem and know what can cause it? :)

its super suuuuuuuuper hard to get out of bed because it feels like I havent slept at all, even after 10 + hours.

maby Thyroid problem?

You might have sleep apnea.  I have it too.  You will wake up in the middle of the night because you can't breath and go back to sleep.  You will never get deep REM sleep.  The thing is that you will forget about waking up and so you think you've slept all the way through.   Either get some breath right strips, or go on oxygen therapy.  That is my only advise.

yeah sometimes I wake up, but I fall asleep again very fast. And its usally good because I go up and take a piss.  ;D
I though sleep apnea were that you have Problem falling asleep which I really dont.

Its really exhausting to never feel rested.

And I actually like waking up, because then it feels like I have slept longer instead of Only waking up in the morning the next day, then it feels like the night was over in one minute.

If you go to the doctor and tell him you have sleep apnea he'll do one of two things.  He won't believe you and decide he wants to do a sleep study on you where they watch you sleep all night long.  Or he'll go ahead and write a prescription for Oxygen therapy.  Weirdly enough when they watched me sleep, I woke up a total of 214 times during an 8 hour period. I didn't even remember waking up at all.  So yeah.  Some people think it's because you're fat and have a heavy chest (which I don't), or that you have a deviated nasal septum (I don;t have that either).  It's unknown why I have it being so young and all.  However, the oxygen is great and my problem was solved because of it.

Yeah.  They either give you a mask, nasal cannula, or face tent.  If I were you, I'd get the nasal cannula and a humidifier so it doesn't dry out your nose.  Yeah, you sleep with it throughout the night.   Just for now, get some breathright strips for your nose and see if those work.  If you don't see improvement go see your doctor soon.

it seems that if you go to a doctor for anything these days they send you to a sleep study (thats if you have decent insurance) they bang the company out for 4000 bucks (the sleep study place) and my guess is plenty of ti goes back to the reffering doc

dude me too!  I had a sleep study done, no problems there.  I need to keep searching, this could very well be chronic fatigue syndrome.  What does it take to solve?  I don't know yet, but this sucks bad.  One thing that helps, Sci-Fit caffeine pills.  In the morning on an empty stomach, then before the gym.

is this your only form of caffeine or stimulant?  Some ppl can only drink a cup of coffee in the morning and it will affect their sleep pattern.

It's most likely because you aren't sleeping deeply. It doesn't matter if you 'sleep' for 8 or even 10 hours - if you wake up in between a few times knowingly (like to go to the loo) or unknowingly (stir and then go back to sleep without remembering), then you are going to feel tired for the rest of the day when you are awake.

The reasons could vary from simple to complex - do you drink any caffeinated drinks like coffee or tea in the couple of hours before bedtime? You'd still sleep, but not as deeply as you ought to be doing. Other reasons could be

- You sleeping next to a person who tosses and turns, that would stir you every few minutes
- You could be deficient in Zinc - common among males, especially those who exercise. You need Zinc to sleep properly, so try supplementing with ZMA
- You consume too much alcohol, which again interferes with your sleeping and reduces it's quality
- You could be exercising or doing things to elevate your metabolism close to bedtime - eg, if you workout from 7 - 9 pm and hit the hay around 10 pm
- You could be stressed from some aspect of your life - mental stress reduces your quality of sleep
- You could be eating too much sugar(y stuff) and / or drink a lot of fluids before bedtime, that makes you wake up to pee in the night a few times
- You could be overtraining and under-eating - try to take a couple of weeks off from the gym to recharge.
- Your immediate sleep environment - if it's too noisy, or bright or even if your bed is not comfortable, you won't sleep as deeply like you could be doing otherwise.

Sleep apnea mostly affects those who are grossly overweight and that's not your case. So if none of the stuff I've listed applies, try and consult a sleep specialist.

There are many possibilities and many different possible causes. Let me list some possibilities:

1. Sleep apnea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea
2. EDS http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=10473 (unlikely)
3. Narcolepsy (unlikely)
4. Chronic fatigue syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_fatigue_syndrome
5. Depression

I'd say some sort of fatigue condition is most likely. This can be caused by overtraining and long lasting stress.

Depression is also a possibility, if you tend to wake up very early and sleep lightly. Of course, you must also be depressed :-) for this diagnosis.

Make sure you:
- have a good sleeping rythm, say 00:00 to 08:00, don't deviate too much.
- read a book before sleeping
- don't drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks 4 hours prior to sleep.
- make sure the bedroom is properly dark and cool.
- have a busy (don't read stressed or swamped) schedule: work, studies, sports, social life.
- create a tidy environment, keep yer house/room/bedroom tidy.
- make sure it's quiet, by earplugs if needed.
- Don't exercise too late, this allows the body to easily cool down to its sleeping temperature.
having tried this and the problems still perseveres then see a doctor. By no means start popping pills or buying kit before you have ensured it's not a simple environmental or lifestyle problem.

I have sleep apena and suffered from many of the same symptoms you described.  I could sleep for 12+ hours and wake up feeling like I only slept an hour.  I ended up going in for two sleep studies, when the results came back I was waking up every 1.5 minutes.  When you fall asleep your muscles relax completely and they were causing my airways to become obstructed and this would cause me to stop breathing which would kick me out of sleep and wake me up.  I never realized I was waking up, but it was causing me to never fully get to sleep.  I now sleep with a CPAP machine.  It took a couple of months to get used to it, but now it's very easy to sleep with and I can't sleep without it.  I highly recommend you looking into and get a sleep study done.  It changed my life completely.  I don't feel like a walking zombie or like I was about to die, I'm alert and awake now and feel refreshed when I wake up.

Maybe you sleep too much?

seriously that can be it...

Optimum amount of sleep is 7-8 hours straight. Anymore than that will not make you more rested, it will actually do the opposite.
One sleep cycle is let's say 8 hours. If you sleep 10 hours you will have finished one sleep cycle (optimum time to get up) and started another, so it's like if you get up after only sleeping 2 hours.

Try to set a pattern, like never stay up after 1.00 let's say you fall a sleep at 2...then you should get up at 10.00 even if you're tired force yourself to get up. (will get easier after a while)

at 10.00 you still feel tired and want to sleep more. But remember, anymore sleep beyond 8 hours will not make you more rested!
get up at 10.00

Sometime during the day, take a nap for 1-2 hours. This will help a lot as it is effective sleep. It will be more beneficial to sleep 2 hours in the middle of the day than adding 2 hours of sleep to your 8 hour night sleep.

Try this and see if it helps.

Sometimes when working etc and you can't get 8 hours every night, maybe only 6. This napping really helps to make you feel better.

Swede,

All the symptoms of being carb sensitive.

hard to get up in the morning? Napping all day? More energy at night?

Try low carb high fat for awhile.

Cheese, bacon, butter, u can have it all.

I know when i try to add weight by eating tons of carbs, i get so drowzy all day, no energy, no motivation,

find it real hard to get up in the morning, then back to bed a couple hours after getting up.

I read that one sleep cycle is 90 mins. So the recommended is 5 cycles - 7 1/2 hours

You also could have a vitamin deficiency...you may want to try a Super B vitamin.  B vitamins, because they are water soluble and our bodies consistently need them, need to be replenished frequently and a lack of sufficient B vitamins can lead to fatigue, headaches, restlessnes...It may be worth a try if you haven't already.

Some good suggestions in this thread.  I would suggest an apnea test too.  Don't take this wrong dude, but you're fairly short, right?  Are your parents short as well or should you be taller?  Most of your natural GH is released during deep sleep, and if you have trouble reaching that sleep state it may have affected your GH level and stature.  I'm not sure it works that way, I'm just guessing, but it seems logical.

Obviously, consider nutritional factors (and antinutritional ones like drinking), environmental, and psychological factors too.

AND GET YOUR ASS TO A DOCTOR ABOUT THIS AND THE LEGS ALREADY!  DON'T MAKE ME START A 'SWEDE INTERVENTION' THREAD.

AND GET YOUR ASS TO A DOCTOR ABOUT THIS AND THE LEGS ALREADY!  DON'T MAKE ME START A 'SWEDE INTERVENTION' THREAD.

Im the tallest one in my family even at 5"7 lol...

I should really check the legs though, would be cool to go out jogging

You also could have a vitamin deficiency...you may want to try a Super B vitamin.  B vitamins, because they are water soluble and our bodies consistently need them, need to be replenished frequently and a lack of sufficient B vitamins can lead to fatigue, headaches, restlessnes...It may be worth a try if you haven't already.

Yeah ithink this could be my problem at the moment.. im just lacking energy.. don't even do that much..lol

Fair enough dude.  Tell a GP about your problem tho and I'll be surprised if he doesn't get you checked for apnea.  I'm in the queue to get checked myself.

You are most likely suffering from depression.

It happens quite often wintertime in your country,
when you dont go to work or school.
Combined with no daylight.

Just get some Prozac and you will notice a big change.

Some antidepressants can make you bigger, wich is perfect
for BB.

Some make you sleep deep and you will wake up feeling rested.

Get some from a doctor, if you dont like them, give them away.
They are almost for free in your country right?
Just 50bucks for 6months supply or something like that.

I would never take antidepressants, I would rather be tired all day :)

Sleeping disorder - not yet established

Apathy, lack of motivation - who's motivated to accomplish tasks?  A task, by definition, is something performed out of obligation, not enjoyment.

Lack of energy combined with burst of energy - Lots of possible causes, namely diet, and not out of the norm.

Difficulties enjoying stuff - if it's everything then that's a problem, but who enjoys getting up to go to work, cleaning, or doing their paperwork?

Mood swings - who doesn't?  You ever live with a woman?

Concentration problems. - if a topic is interesting, it doesn't require concentration, and if it's boring then of course it's hard to keep your mind on it.

Easily distracted - Again, a lot of daily life involves fulfilling obligations.  If you weren't distracted from things which don't interest you then you are a nut or a boring sob.

Difficult to complete tasks - you mean like mowing the lawn?  Of course not.  A task like building a business takes a little longer.  What kind of task are we talking about?

That's the criteria for 'depression?'  That list would apply to damn near everyone.  There's no reference to actual emotional depression - feeling frequently or constantly sad, tearful, emotionally low, constantly thinking of things which make you feel bad, suicidal thoughts, avoiding social interaction, or being told by others that you seem depressed.  Do you think there's any chance that lists like this one are heavily influenced by pharmaceutical manufacturers?
