what muscle do you train by doing that?

lats

You don't have to lean right back, nor do you have to stay perfectly upright.
When i show people i tell them to keep their eyes on the top pulley right on top of the machine. Makes them lean back a little, but not excessively.

Ehm, pulling down is the point of Lat pulldowns.
Pulling back is the point of rowing movements. ;)

Sure you do, have you ever tried it? Also I've leaned forward and pulled down behind my neck, works well too.

Not at all, Stark - sitting dead straight isn't ineffective or anything, although the conventional method to do lat pull downs is to lean back a little. A lat pulldown is biomechanically similar to doing a pull up or a chin-up, so keeping the torso completely upright won't render the movement useless. As long as you use your lats to control the weight while using your arms as levers and keep your shoulders retracted, it's fine.

you're supposed to sit up straight fool. That's why it's a LAT pull down. You retract the shoulder blades to keep the shoulders from shrugging at the top of the motion and then you pull down as if you're doing a pull up. This engages the LATS. Lean back and see how much lat you use... you may as well do cable rows because that's all you're doing...
keep bashing trainers fellas. ::)

Forgive Stark, he's acting like he actually works out.

I do them sitting straight? ???

Probably the #1 exercise I see being done wrong in our gym. I've only seen one trainer demonstrate it correctly. :-\
-
I always thought the back muscle must be used for any exercise where arms are pulled down. Physically, there's really no other way.

I once saw a personal trainer give one of his female clients some GHB, telling her it would lean her up. A few months later he ended up with rape charges.
