How convenient it seems that in the past two years there has been a virtual onslaught of "NEW" viruses that seem to come from literally no where. Chicken Flu, Turkey Flu, Avian Flu, Bird Flu, H1N5, H1N1, H11N77, H this and N that, Spanish Flu, Swine Flu, Hepatitis D, etc etc etc...and all of this happening at the same time biological labs, genetic sequencing, viral and bacterial manipulation is being advanced around the world.... in particular in america. The continued FEARMONGERING by america is being RAMPED TO LEVEL 99 when it comes to these 'strange new emergenses of 'diseases'. Eveyone needs to read Lenord horowitz's book EMERGING VIRUSES AIDS AND EBOLA, where he make it very clear that these new viruses are man made and the goal is to use them as BIOWEAPONS....Question is...On who and on what nation are these weapons being made for???
Mexican Swine Flu
An Advanced Biowar Event
That Will Be Bigger Than 9/11
By The Earl of Stirling
4-25-9
On 23 rd April 2009 the world began to become aware of a very strange new version of swine flu H1N1 in Mexico with limited cases in Texas and California. By the morning of the 24th of April, we began hear that there were hundreds of sick and 20 or so dead. By late in the day, we have learned that over 1,000 are now reported ill and over 60 are reported dead. There are solid reasons to suspect that this new Mexican Swine Flu is NOT a naturally occurring event but instead is an Advanced Biological Warfare recombination DNA genetically engineered virus.
Here is what we know of the virus so far. This virus has already gone international having crossed the border from Mexico to America. All schools in Mexico City have been canceled, millions of students told to stay home due to Mexican Swine Flu. Sick victims of this strange new virus are currently reported in California and Texas. Over 60 deaths reported in Mexico (could be substantially higher considering the state of Mexican health care and reporting).
Young healthy adults seem to be the most at risk. This is similar to the deadest killer flu in history, Spanish Flu in 1918. Most if not all nations with advanced biological warfare programs have been interested in recreating the Spanish Flu DNA sequence and several are reported to have done so.
The new Mexican Swine Flu has elements of DNA from the following: avian flu, human flu Type A, human flu Type B, Asian swine flu, and European swine flu. A strange combination never seen before and having less than 1/10% chance of being a natural event. Human and animal viruses from four or more continents suddenly recombine in a new flu during a non-flu season that spreads from human-to-human with a 10% fatality rating.
Over 1,000 reported infected in Mexico; true rate may be much higher. Mexico City seems to be the epicenter of the new virus. Mexico City has 20 million citizens, most terribly poor. Mexico City is notorious for its poor sanitation and public health. "Don't drink the water" has been the byword in Mexico City for decades. It is the perfect breading ground for an explosive growth of this new killer virus. Mexico City has closed all schools, public gatherings, public buildings. People are wearing medical masks on the streets. The government has announced a massive new emergency swine flu vaccination program that will be, at best, either totally non-effective or of very limited effect, and could be, at worst, a deadly option for patients. It is thought that the authorities are trying to contain public panic by announcing the vaccination program.
Both the World Health Organization and the US CDC (Center for Disease Control) have announced, today/24th April, that they are 'very concerned' about a global pandemic developing out of this new disease. Based on advanced biowargaming projections, it is already too late to stop the global spread of this new killer disease. Based on the three waves of Spanish Flu, the latter ones being more lethal, fatality rates may range from approximately 10% to 40% or so in later waves. More people could die in America, Mexico, Canada, Europe, and globally from Mexican Swine Flu than died in World War II.
This new flu is a lab created advanced biological warfare DNA genetically engineered virus that either: (1) Escaped accidentally from a lab; or (2) was deliberately released by a nation or non-state organization or a well-trained individual.
If there is a positive side to this coming global disaster, it may force governments to quickly come to grips with containing advanced biowar attacks. This is of considerable short term importance as Israel is apt to attack Iran by no later than mid-July 2009. The Iranians, having hired a large number of key ex-Soviet advanced biowar scientists 18 years ago and having spent billions on their asymmetrical MAD (mutually assured destruction) counter-force, are expected to respond to any significant attack on Iran with a biowar attack on Israel, North America, and Europe using in-place agents and dozens of genetically engineered viruses, many with very high projected kill rates.
This event is an advanced biological warfare event. It is far more important than 9/11 and, by itself, could bring deaths in such magnitudes as to exceed the number of deaths from all causes in the Second World War.

The amount of deaths because Americans are denied or that do not have healthcare are 3-4 times the size of 911 in America every year. :-\

Good post Samson. An associate of mine that I grew up with, who has high level govt. security clearence told me a while back about some of the biological agents that have been developed recently, and are being brokered in the Middle east. Scary stuff.

Let me ask a question.
If someone without health insurance were to contract such a malady, would you advocate that the infected individual die because, "it is not my problem" ?

I'm not sure too many hospitals would be able to help him either way..and he would probably be sent an emergency room where he probably wouldn't be denied treatment. I think Health Care coverage for all definitely has merit, but it also needs to be tempeerd with responsibility from the covered individual. For example, if a family chooses to feed their child nothing but grape soda, twinkies, fruit loops and other high sugary foods and the child develops diabetes as a result...and if these scenarios played out on a large scale, then I would resent my tax dollars funding such nutritional irresponsibility. In England for example, they're now considering imposing reqirements that could deny coverage to severely obese people.

Given the scenario of infectious agents being created with the goal of being used as BIOWEAPONS...no sane person would even give thought to the idea of "it's not my problem". Maybe today, maybe tomorrow it may not be your problem, but a virulent, air borned pathogen would be EVERYBODIES PROBLEM SOON and everyone would be looking for a medical specialist to find a cure. The pathogens that are being "summoned" (I used that word because it evokes the idea of something EVIL being brought into being as these hair brained scientist are doing with tese viruses) into existence at these labortories like Plum Island, USAMRID, and a few other places are without cure (or at least the cure will NOT be made available to the masses) for the sake of poulation control or as a Bioweapon. Should one of these agents truly be made into a successful PANDEMIC where millions would end up dying...I think there would be the erection of large concentration camp style facilities where people woulld be forced into and left to die...or worst they would be killed on the spot where ever they are if there is even an inkling that the person may be infected with whatever pathogen is... THE NEW PANDEMIC...
-
I'll be covered...so I guess ur fucked huh...3rd worlders don't get enoculated. Is everything a conspiracy.

If this were to become some kind of Hollywood "Outbreak" senario..anybody who contracted it would be treated and quarantined. Marshall law would be declared locally or nationally. But this "earlo of stirling"...this guy is ur source for how the virus was developed? Come on.... ::)

COVERED???? you think so??? In case you didn't read the article...the out breaks of these diseases are happening in america as well. There are no VACCINES, Elixirs or potions you can take for a pandemic. If you are a part of the military and you think you are COVERED??? you better take a look at the returning soldiers to america...does it look like the american government gives a DAMN about their crippled bodies, damaged brains or pathetic financial situation (much of which the american government casued)??? Better think again. So what makes you think they will be concerned about your diseased body?
So far as your comment on so called 3rd world nations....america IS THIRD WORLD...as a matter of fact it is FOURTH WORLD at this point. You're penniless, poor, without business or manufacturing, your food (70%) comes from other nations, your goods are made primarily in China, you beg for money from China who supports america like a WELFARE CHILD, American is bending and bowing to the EU, Middle Eastern countries, China and soon Russia as well...and you think you are NOT third world yourself!!! Right now your supermarkets have food on their shelves, you have TV to watch, you have cheap gas...just wait a few more months and these things suddenly disappear... watch how fast america sinks into absolute DEPRAVITY and SAVAGERY. america will truly be a UNCIVILIZED NATIONS

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by RNA viruses
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza
"Classic" Recombination of this type is very rare in RNA viruses (there are probably no host enzymes for RNA recombination).
http://pathmicro.med.sc.edu/mhunt/genet.htm
I'm not an expert on this, just trying to understand WTF... From what I see it's very rare for an RNA virus to hybrid with another and this one has up to 5 viruses combinations? WTF?
-
guys, don't derail this thread. I'm interesting in understanding what's going on, how and why. This is a terrible thread for a pointless pissing match. If you don't have anything to bring that we can all benefit/learn from please save it.

I am glad you said this, becasue it shows you are a person who is thinking....Most people don't think about the fact that viruses do NOT join together, do NOT suddenly mutate, do NOT jump from animal to humans (or vice versa)...UNLESS they are coaxed into such and that requires a lot of laboratory manipulation. These new diseases are being CREATED they are NOT evolving...so some entity be it government, military, mad ecientist etc etc is on the warpath against people, populations and countries. I feel it is just a matter of time before they hit the BULLSEYE with a viral combination that will be A PANDEMIC...

jeez..never thought I'd be agreeing with Samson...but he might be right here.

This is going to be a big killer and with experts saying this, I should think we would all want to talk about this.

I've read that it is actually common for viruses to mutate suddenly and hybrid but from what I've read so far, it depends a lot on the type of virus and RNA (flu) viruses do not easily combine and combinations are very rare. Hopefully we can all combine some research and maybe get a better understanding of this.
Anybody know if there are any microbiology majors on getbig or in the field or related field? Would be great to get an expert or someone with a good understanding in here.

It's popping up in several areas across the country, they've been interupting tv with updates. I doubt it will fizzle at this point. The flu is highly infectous.

YES Hugo viruses can mutate, but that mutation only occurs once it has infected a host (be it animal or human). The mutating is a defence the virus attempts at keeping itself safe from ones immune system, but a virus has properties and/or genetic material which it can NOT change and that is what ones immune system goes after in order to destroy the virus completely.A virus however will NOT and can NOT mutate to the degree that we see viruses mutating today. These mutations are COAXED in labratories in hopes of manufacturing a KILLER. AIDS is one of the main MANUFACTURED VIRUSES that was designed to go after the very immune system that protects everyone...It took a lot of experimenting and trials to get it to work, but the scientist managed to do it. So now they seem to want to make something that is just as deadly, BUT WORKS A LOT FASTER.....

I think what is being done with this multiple place outbreak is an attempt to get many people infected with this virus so that it has a chance to adapt. If someone: person with a weak immune system, becomes the host of this virus, not only will that person die form the virus, they will also be the incubator that will allow the virus to favor infecting humans. Once that aspect of the disease is accomplished, then the possiblity of pandemic comes all the more close. Now while a disease may appear in many states or countries at once...that does not mean that the immune system has failed adn it will become pandemic...what alawys needs to happen is the immune system either is made to FAIL, or somehow the virus is foreign to teh immune system giving it the ability to kill its host before immunity can be developed. So we will have to see how immunity develops with this SWINE FLU. If it begins spreading massively adn NO ONE develops immunity...then there is a BIG PROBLEM, but if it begins fizzling after infecting people...that means immunity is developing and soon the virus will be just a memory...

mutation isn't even the issue here. This is the hybridization of multiple viruses in a virus type that is stated to be rare between two. I only mentioned mutation because you did.

Could someone tell me what in the hell is going on here? Could this be one of the ways in which these viruses end up being in a complex hybrid state?
This is from 2002:
Abstract.
Swine influenza virus (SIV) RNA and antigen were detected in 15 naturally infected pigs by in
situ hybridization using a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled cDNA probe and by immunohistochemistry using
an influenza virus H1N1–specific monoclonal antibody. A 582–base pair cDNA probe for viral RNA encoding
the nucleocapsid protein of SIV type A H1N1 strain was generated by the reverse transcription polymerase
chain reaction. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry gave similar results for serial sections from
each of 15 lung samples. Positive cells typically exhibited a dark brown (in situ hybridization) or red (immunohistochemistry)
reaction product in the nucleus and cytoplasm without background staining. A strong positive
signal for both in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry was detected mainly in the bronchial and
bronchiolar epithelial cells. A less intense signal was detected in the interstitial and alveolar macrophages.
Simultaneous detection of hybridization and immunohistochemical signals on serial sections provided evidence
that SIV had replicated in positive cells. The in situ hybridization technique developed in this study was useful
for the detection of SIV RNA in tissues taken from naturally infected pigs and may be a valuable technique
for studying the pathogenesis of SIV infection.
"Hybridization was done overnight at 45 C. The digoxigenin-
labeled probe (0.1 ng/ml) was diluted in 300 ml of the
standard hybridization buffer, heated for 10 minutes at 95 C
on a heating block, and quenched on ice before being applied
to the tissue sections."
Results
The SIV H1N1 (A/Seoul/20/91) and human influenza
virus H3N2 (A/Johannesberg/33/95) reacted with
the primers of SIV. The primers did not react with
human influenza B (B/Beijing/184/93), PRRSV,
PRCV, TGEV, PEDV, and PCV types 1 and 2. SIV
was isolated from the lung in five pigs (Nos. 2, 5, 6,
11, 14). All five influenza viruses isolated from pigs
were amplified in MDCK cells, and the resulting virus
RNA was reacted with primers specific for SIV by
PCR (Fig. 1). PCR products from each isolate were
sequenced, and their identity was confirmed as influenza
virus (data not shown).
The results of virus isolation, in situ hybridization,
and immunohistochemistry are summarized in Table
1. The morphology of host cells was preserved despite
the relatively high temperature required in parts of the
incubation procedure. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry
gave similar results for serial sections
from each of 15 lung samples (Figs. 2, 3). Positive
cells typically exhibited a dark brown (in situ
hybridization) or red (immunohistochemistry) reaction

I used mutation in describing the AIDS virus when I should have said HYBRIDIZATION (I stand corrected)...As the HIV virus is a combination of a bovine virus and a sheep virus (something that will NEVER happen naturally)..this too had to be COAXED into adapting to human cells by growing it in mice, then, rats, then cats, then monkeys then human tissue. It is/was a difficult process, but you see the end result. If you want to get deep into this, the book I mentioned earlier by Dr. Lenoard Horowitz: EMERGING VIRUSES explains how government scientist create these viuses and bacteria and how they are cultured in animal andthen human tissue inorder to get them to the infectious state for humans.

"If a host like a pig or a person is infected by both a bird virus and a human or pig virus the segments are in a common pool within the host cell and can become mixed, with some segments coming from one virus and some from another. This can produce another kind of hybrid between a bird and a human influenza virus. The difference between this mechanism and recombination is that the segments move en bloc as a single piece while in recombination bits and pieces of segments might be spliced together as in the human-pig HA example above rather than an HA from a pig or an HA from a human as in reassortment. "

These sources of information are more confusing than helpful and just for the record...what is being said here goes COUNTER to what I learned in college chemistry and biology...we were told that viruses could NEVER hybridize and could only mutate to a certain degree and that degree of mutation depended on the host. All that is being said on the news and these articles goes WAAAAAAAY beyond what we were told was possible...

This article is essentially saying that in order to get a hybridized or combination virus made from two or more viruses there had to be a manipulation of the DNA/RNA. In short what they are telling you is there is no way in hell two viruses could join together unless there is a manipulation of each virus on a genetic level to make that possible...add to that the genetically manipulated viruses have to be cultured in a certain "ideal" environment to get a response. This is part of the way inwhich scientist get a virus to join to other viruses as well as get viruses that COULD NOT INFECT HUMANS to do so.
This is some heavy stuff Hugo... This is out of my league as I didn't have to deal with biology on the level of genetic manipulation. This information is however helpful in getting people to understand on a basic level that these HYBRIDIZATIONS ARE NOT POSSIBLE NATURALLY... and that mutations are extremely limited.

question : if one of former Prez Bush's daughters got aids today would we tomorrow have a hallelujah moment and find a cure 2 weeks later?
-
It is confusing a bit. If you take the word from some of the sources I posted, it's as simple as taking two seperate flu viruses and placing them in a single cell to obtain a hybrid, but when you actually read through research papers they create flu hybrids like the one I posted, it becomes clear that they had to go through processes that could not possibly occur in a living host.

The cure for AIDS, EBOLA, HANTA VIRUS, WEST NILE, LIME DISEASE and all the other diseases that MAGICALLY appeared in the past two decades has been around for as long as the diseases. Scientist do not release diseases unless they also have the cure. Right now there are extensive experiments going on in how these diseases are transmitted, in which populations of people they aer transmitted the most, which racial group may be more suseptablel than others etc etc. I think if Jenna or barbara Bush turned up positive not only would we not hear about it, but she would be wisked away for treament that NO ONE ELSE COULD EVER GET. I always wonder how Magic Johnson is still here....Hmmmmm...I am just saying

YOU ARE RIGHT...It is not that simple...Simply placing two viruses in a cell will NOT cause the two viruses to combine. This combination must be done outside of the cell (labratory) by taking genetic material from one virus and literally forcing it into the genetic chain of the other virus through chemical manipulation....otherwis e it will just be a cell with two types of viral material inside. and if the two viral materials are not compatible with the cell/host the cell will either die with the genetic material inside and be eliminated from the body, or the body's immune system will release killer T cells which kill all cells which have genetic material within that is not indigenous to the cell.
-
-
YEAH He's right this is a strain they have never seen before...you wanna know why??? Because they created this in a lab and it doesn't and has never existed in nature. One thing to keep in mind...despite a virus' ability to mutate it always retains its origins...meaning it can always be traced back to the parent virus from which it came. To make it simple...just like you are different than your parents in appearance..there is genetic links that can be tested for that enables scientist to determine that you are related to your parents. If there are no links, it is IMPOSSIBLE for you to exist unless you are like Frankensteins monster and you are a created thing...like these new flu viruses are.
Notice also the guy had to keep looking down to read a chart that has the supposed symptoms on it. If you didn't notice watch the video again and watch his eyes as he tells of the symptoms...As a doctor shouldn't he know the symptoms??...He's probably a agent for the NIH, Plumb Island, USAMRID or similar agency who are hoping this becomes a pandemic...
-
One thing is for sure, this meets all the requirements for a major pandemic. Nobody can argue against that point. Nobody has any immunity to this and it'll spread like wildfire. By the time someone is showing symptoms, they'll already have spread it to several new hosts.
-
This is very interesting, this guy is in California and went around trying to get some masks and had a very hard time finding anything. The real WTF thing he says is that employees in one pharmacy said that a manager cleared the shelves of masks "A WEEK BEFORE" ??? hmmm, they don't want people to have these masks? And what's up with the manager clearing the shelves a week ago? WTF...

NOT SO FAST NOT SO FAST (make sure you say that with your DAFFY DUCK VOICE...lol)
It will still take many infections and a total lack of an immune response before that can be said. As it stand there are a few cases that "seem" ideal...but I will wait and see brfore I start duck tapping my house up in plastic. As it stands there are 36000 death in america every yearfrom the regular flu and no one panics....these 36000 people are old, weakened immune systems or have other preexistig conditions that makes them suseptable. If in a few weeks there are thousand s of people infected and no immune response of any kind then i will say we have a possible pandemic. but if the numbers start to dwindle...well.....

NOT SO FAST NOT SO FAST (make sure you say that with your DAFFY DUCK VOICE...lol)

we wouldn't be able to seal ourselves in anyway even if we wanted to. It's not like I can just tell my wife to quit her job just in case lol... But if I'm understanding this right, nobody has an immunity to this. So like with any other flu or cold, some people comming into contact with it will have an immunity. This will effect everyone infected, they will then either die or get over it and have an immunity but since it's totally new the spread has a higher immediate potential. By the time a dude is feeling sick, he's already had time to spread it. It's not like you get it and immediately have symptoms and some of your first symptoms are going to be spreading symptoms like sneezing. I hope I'm totally wrong but I see this thing as running through the population at this point and nothing they can do about it. Hope I'm wrong, especially since we're about to have a baby.

I remember reading about this last year...scientist ressurecting the Spanish Flu virus and wondering what they were doing that for...now I know
Scientists Isolate Genes
That Made 1918 Flu Deadly
From Patricia Doyle, PhD
4-25-9
Hello Jeff - Remember this? Scientists isolate genes that made the 1918 flu lethal. This was dated Dec. 29, 2008. It hasn't been very long since this discovery was made then the new strain variant showed up in Mexico and the US, not very long, indeed.
"The 1918 virus replicates in the upper respiratory tract, but also in the lungs, causing primary pneumonia among its victims."
I think it is pretty obvious that the Mexican variant also replicates in upper respiratory tract and also in the lungs causing primary pneumonia. I think we are seeing this in the Mexican cases. Coincidence? Or, is the Mexican virus a lab developed copy of the Spanish Flu.
"For the most part, substituting single genes from the 1918 virus onto the template of a much more benign contemporary virus yielded agents that could only replicate in the upper respiratory tract. One exception, however, included a complex of three genes that, acting in concert with another key gene, allowed the virus to efficiently colonize lung cells and make RNA polymerase, a protein necessary for the virus to reproduce."
Interesting.

Scientists Isolate Genes That Made 1918 Flu Lethal
By Terry Devitt
12-29-8
By mixing and matching a contemporary flu virus with the "Spanish flu" - a virus that killed between 20 and 50 million people 90 years ago in history's most devastating outbreak of infectious disease - researchers have identified a set of three genes that helped underpin the extraordinary virulence of the 1918 virus.
Writing today (Dec. 29) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team led by University of Wisconsin-Madison virologists Yoshihiro Kawaoka and Tokiko Watanabe identifies genes that gave the 1918 virus the capacity to reproduce in lung tissue, a hallmark of the pathogen that claimed more lives than all the battles of World War I combined.
"Conventional flu viruses replicate mainly in the upper respiratory tract: the mouth, nose and throat. The 1918 virus replicates in the upper respiratory tract, but also in the lungs," causing primary pneumonia among its victims, says Kawaoka, an internationally recognized expert on influenza and a professor of pathobiological sciences in the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. "We wanted to know why the 1918 flu caused severe pneumonia."
Autopsies of 1918 flu victims often revealed fluid-filled lungs severely damaged by massive hemorrhaging. Scientists assumed that the ability of the virus to take over the lungs is associated with the pathogen's high level of virulence, but the genes that conferred that ability were unknown.
Discovery of the complex and its role in orchestrating infection in the lungs is important because it could provide a way to quickly identify the potential virulence factors in new pandemic strains of influenza, Kawaoka says. The complex could also become a target for a new class of antiviral drugs, which is urgently needed as vaccines are unlikely to be produced fast enough at the outset of a pandemic to blunt its spread.
To find the gene or genes that enabled the virus to invade the lungs, Kawaoka and his group blended genetic elements from the 1918 flu virus with those of a currently circulating avian influenza virus and tested the variants on ferrets, an animal that mimics human flu infection.
For the most part, substituting single genes from the 1918 virus onto the template of a much more benign contemporary virus yielded agents that could only replicate in the upper respiratory tract. One exception, however, included a complex of three genes that, acting in concert with another key gene, allowed the virus to efficiently colonize lung cells and make RNA polymerase, a protein necessary for the virus to reproduce.
"The RNA polymerase is used to make new copies of the virus," Kawaoka explains. Without the protein, the virus is unable to make new virus particles and spread infection to nearby cells.
In the late 1990s, scientists were able to recover genes from the 1918 virus by looking in the preserved lung tissue of some of the pandemic's victims. Using the relic genes, Kawaoka's group was able to generate viruses that carry different combinations of the 1918 virus and modern seasonal influenza virus.
When tested, most of the hybrid viruses only infected the nasal passages of ferrets and didn't cause pneumonia. But one did infect the lungs, and it carried the RNA polymerase genes from the 1918 virus that allowed the virus to make the key step of synthesizing its proteins.
In 2004, Kawaoka and his team identified another key gene from the 1918 virus that enhanced the pathogen's virulence in mice. That gene makes hemagglutinin, a protein found on the surface of the virus and that confers on viral particles the ability to attach to host cells.
"Here, I think we are talking about another mechanism," Kawaoka says. The RNA polymerase is used to make copies of the virus once it has entered a host cell. The role of hemagglutinin is to help the virus gain access to cells.
In addition to the study's lead authors, Watanabe and Kawaoka, co-authors of the new PNAS paper are Shinji Watanabe, Jin Hyun Kim and Masato Hatta, also of UW-Madison; and Kyoko Shinya of Kobe University. The work was funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and by grants-in-aid from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan.

Venture capital firm set to reap rewards on swine flu
Fri Apr 24, 2009 11:11pm BST
LOS ANGELES, April 24 (Reuters) - The swine flu outbreak is likely to benefit one of the most prolific and successful venture capital firms in the United States: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Thomson Reuters Private Equity Week reported on Friday.
Shares of the two public companies in the firm's portfolio of eight Pandemic and Bio Defense companies -- BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX.O) and Novavax (NVAX.O) -- jumped Friday on news that the swine flu killed a reported 60 people in Mexico and has infected people in the United States.
The World Health Organization said the virus appears to be susceptible to Roche's (ROG.VX) flu drug Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, but not to older flu drugs such as amantadine.
Shares of Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG closed up 3.48 percent after falling sharply earlier in the week on a cancer drug disappointment, while shares of U.S. biotechnology company Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD.O), which gets royalties from Roche on Tamiflu sales, slipped 10 cents to $45.80 on Friday.
But BioCryst, a maker of drugs that block key enzymes in viral diseases, jumped more than 26 percent on Friday to $2.21 per share. Viral vaccine maker Novavax rose more than 75 percent to $1.42 per share.
BioCryst CEO John Stonehouse said his company does not anticipate the use of its technology in treating this episode of swine flu.
"We're in clinical trials right now and not on the market," Stonehouse said.
Still, the companies will have to go even higher for Kleiner Perkins to make its investment back. Both BioCryst and Novavax experienced long drops from price peaks in 2006, when reports of avian flu dominated headlines.
BioCryst is down nearly 90 percent from its 2006 high of $20.75 per share and Novavax is down more than 85 percent from a high of $7.98 per share.
Kleiner Perkins invested $30 million in BioCryst in December 2005 alongside Fort Worth, Texas-based buyout firm TPG. The two firms invested again in August 2007, picking up $65 million worth of shares and warrants. The investors bought shares in BioCryst at $13.46 and then $7.80.
Kleiner Perkins put $20 million in Novavax in February 2006 alongside Palo Alto, Calif.-based Prospect Venture Partners. The two firms picked up the shares at $4.35.
Novavax can produce a vaccine from an emergent strain of flu virus in 12 weeks, according to CEO Rahul Singhvi. The company has contacted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to offer help and is trying to contact the Ministry of Health in Mexico, Singhvi said.
The company uses genetic information and "recombinant, virus-like particle technology" to rapidly engineer a vaccine. Its technology has been proven to work in humans during Phase II trials, Singhvi said, and it might be used in the case of an emergency.
"There is an emergency authorization avenue that is available that would allow us to use the vaccine in an emergency without further testing," said Singhvi.
Kleiner Perkins typically only invests in early stage start-up technologies. It is best known for its investments in Netscape, Amazon.com (AMZN.O), Google (GOOG.O) and Genentech (ROG.VX).
The Menlo Park, California-based VC firm launched a $200 million Pandemic Bio Defense fund in 2006 to invest in technology companies working on drugs, diagnostics and inoculations against flu-like diseases.
"We will invest to accelerate innovation, and we're in a hurry," Investor John Doerr said at the time. "We hope even a mild pandemic never recurs."
Investors at Kleiner Perkins were not immediately available for comment.
The firm's other Pandemic Bio Defense investments include: * San Francisco-based Anza Therapeutics, which is working on therapeutic vaccines for treating certain types of cancer and hepatitis C. * Fremont, Calif.-based Breathe Technologies, which is working on lightweight respiratory ventilator systems. * Emeryville, Calif.-based HX Diagnostics, which is working to make diagnostic tools for seasonal and emerging diseases. * Pleasanton, Calif.-based Juvaris BioTherapeutics Inc., which is working on vaccines and immunotherapeutics to treat infectious disease and cancer. * San Diego-based Trius Therapeutics, which is developing drugs to fight resistant-strains of bacteria. * Marlborough, Mass.-based Xcellerex Inc., which has developed tools and manufacturing processes to speed the deployment of new vaccines.

New Spanish Flu Variant & Navy Experiment At Border?
From Patricia Doyle, PhD
4-24-9
Hello Jeff - I wonder what the heck the following means? Was the Navy doing some sort of testing at the Mexican border? This Swine Flue outbreak stinks. Something is wrong.
Patty
The unusual strain this year was noticed, said Dr. Anne Schuchat [director of respiratory diseases the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], only because the agency was trying out a new diagnostic test at a Navy laboratory and doing more testing than usual through a new Border Infectious Disease Surveillance Project along the Mexican border. [See: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol9no1/pdfs/02-0047.pdf --The U.S.-Mexico Border Infectious Disease Surveillance Project: Establishing Bi-national Border Surveillance (cdc.gov).]

Mexico City suspends school over flu epidemic 24 Apr 2009 Mexico City has suspended classes at schools and universities to contain what could be a new flu strain. Health Secretary Jose Cordova says private and public schools in this metropolis of 20 million have been ordered to remain closed Friday. The measure could be extended in coming days. Cordova says the flu is a "new, different strain that can attack anyone." [See: http://www.legitgov.org/flu_oddities.html --- Flu 'Oddities']

It means exactly what I have been saying all through this thread...and exactly what you think. These new viruses DO NOT EXIST NATURALLY IN NATURE. Nearly every new viral strain of everything for the past 10 to 20 years has been "CULTURED" in a labratory. MEANING it is a hybrid (made by scientist combinng two or more viruses genetic material together) or it is a forced mutation (grown in different animals and human tissue in order to make the virus adopt genetic traits it would naturally never have). This game that is being played on the public exposes the incredible lying the medical science world plays on the public. First they say "there is a new strain of virus X"... what they don't say is THEY CREATED THE NEW STRAIN OF VIRUS X.
Have you ever wondered how scientist know what strain of flu is going to exist in the following year (Oui Ji board, Tarot Cards, What?)? and how is it that they can make vaccines for it so fast whereas vaccines for all other infections takes years if not decades to produce and cost BILLIONS of dollars? Hate to say it but the masses have been used as Guinea pigs for years now. No one asks these question, neither do they ask about the side effects of these supposed vaccines (of which there are always side effects) and in all honesty no one even knows if what they are being injected with is a vaccine at all!!!...or at least not a vaccine for the flu. For all intents and purposes these "flu vaccines" could be experimental vaccines for other types of diseases or they could actually be injecting people with crippled forms of diseases to see what happens. I don't put anything past the military and the medical science world as they have a goal different from bringing health to people... keep in mind the american soldiers sent to Iraq who were injected with all types of experimental vaccines and given all types of experimental drugs. Many came down with debilitating sickness, many died and some are living with all manner of side effects from twitching, to nerve damage, to psychological damage, to blindness, hearing loss, cancers, leukemia etc etc...

I agree with a lot of this. I also believe that some fairly sinister things have been perpetrated on the public by the whole corporate/pharmaceutical industry. Profits being way more important to them than the safety and health of the general public.

Speaking of Immunity, I was watching a Secrets of the Dead episode and a guy who was a descendant of someone who survived the Bubonic Plague, he got AIDS, but somehow developed some sort of immunity. This was back in the 80's when this happened, and he was thought of as an anomaly.
I remember a couple of years ago a TV special showing people who had HIV who had lived at least 20 years with absolutely no symptoms or effect to their immune systems. Some were gay who lived extremely promiscuously, some were IV drug users some were just regular folk who had the virus, but the virus was not affecting them. There also was a large population of Africans who were immune to HIV and scientist were wondering why. All of these things are related to the complexity of the immune system and how it is capable of isolating viruses in the body even though it can not effectively kill the virus. THe person with the virus becomes a carrier though...meaning they won't get tthe full blown disease and will live a normal full life, but if they engage in unprotected sex with someone, the person can become infected. History shows that despite nature or man there are always people who will be immune from whatever the latest pandemic, outbreak or scourge is that over take a country or the planet. These individuals essentially hold the key to the survival of many, by finding out how their immune system keeps the virus in check...or destroys it all together....

You only have to worry if you're young and healthy... You know how the flu usually only targets the very young and old for death, exactly the opposite for this new one! WTF???
Range of ages infected: 9 to 54 years old: Link (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20090424.ILLNESSSWINELAYER24ART2044/TPStory/TPInternational/?page=rss&id=GAM.20090424.ILLNESSSWINELAYER24ART2044)
"So far, in the United States the swine flu has infected a group between the ages of 7 and 54. One person was hospitalized. In Mexico, the illness infected mostly men between the ages of 20 and 35" Link (http://www.detnews.com/article/20090426/NATION/904260334/1409/METRO)
"Most of the dead were aged 25 to 45, a worrying sign because a hallmark of past pandemics has been high fatalities among healthy young adults." Link (http://www.kccq.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=104668&article=5370418)
I'll merge this with the other thread in a bit but I wanted everyone to see this incase they thought they didn't have to care because they're young and healthy. Apparently the more healthy you are, the more this attacks you. "Ironically, it is the good health of this young adult population which causes the fatalities" It "triggers a severe immune response which leads to excessive edema. This in turn ruptures the cell walls leading to hemorrhagic symptoms. Patients bleed out into their lungs and drown." So the more effective your immune response is, the worse for you.
Also a second WTF for me is why this was only carried by Rueters and in all the other stories I've seen they've had their usual warning about the very young and old needing to worry the most???
HOW IS THIS GOING TO EFFECT THE ECONOMY? :o perfect storm shit, or engineered storm, depending on what you believe.

BOOM, SMOKING GUN... And from a skeptic's article at The Weekly Standard 3 years ago...
"Separately, the scientists used gene splicing to create a hybrid H5N1/H3N2 virus. In other words, rather than letting nature take its course and seeing if the viruses would reassort, they guaranteed that reassortment occurred. "

who came to that conclusion? I'm not sure I would understand such a statement seeing this meets so many, if not all, of the prime requirements for a pandemic. Who said it was going to peter out shortly?

LOL, here's what Canada also said: "Health authorities said they were ready to address the potential spread of the swine flu outbreak and had a stockpile of 50 million vaccine doses, which would be sufficient to serve Canada's population of 33 million people."
I think they just showed their, "we'll tell you whatever to avoid a panic" hand. There is no vaccine for this and Canada certainly does not have 50 million vaccines, they don't have one publically available vaccine for this.

The world is due for another epidemic of some type of flu, if you guys study how the flu viruses come about and change you would realize that its been a long time since a global widespread pandemic of flu. Its odds really and we havent had a real bad form of flu that is transferable to humans for sometime.

Maybe I should e-mail him my articles showing this virus is made from good ole america sources like american pigs, american human genes and some european pig genes. Last time I checked the ARABS wouldn't come within a hundred feet of SWINE...so that counts them out for being the culprits.... But good ole american scientist wake up and chew on swine bacon, gobble down HAM sandwhiches for lunch and have pork chops for dinner...so no fear of dealing with swine with them... Michael Savage just needs a CHILL PILL and refocus his attention on the REAL CULPRITS behind all of this...

he was all over the place which is why I lol'd And his cure was Vitamin C lol... Because it'll increase immune response. But from the post that I stickied, it's a quick immune response that makes it deadly. I don't quite understand why that is beyond what I quoted but lol at Michael Savage, he might be giving advice that's good for the common cold, but will aid in the type of response that hurts with this.
I did read something about cinnamon, something about workers in cinnamon factories not being effected by the Spanish flu. maybe that's worth researching if this thing goes pandemic and starts killing like crazy.

Suspected swine flu deaths in Mexico top 100
MEXICO CITY – The Mexican government is trying to stem the spread of a deadly strain of swine flu as a new work week begins by urging people to stay home Monday if they have any symptoms of the virus believed to have killed more than 100 people.
Officials have already closed schools in three states and canceled hundreds of public events. But as the number of suspected cases and deaths rose again on Sunday — and millions returning to work on Monday — they looked to other measures to control the outbreak.
Labor Secretary Javier Lozano Alarcon said employers should isolate anyone showing up for work with fever, cough, sore throat or other signs of the flu.
Fear of the disease caused most residents of Mexico's capital to hunker down at home on Sunday. The cardinal said Mass in a shuttered cathedral. Soccer teams played to empty stadiums. A television variety show filled studio-audience seats with cardboard cutouts bearing broad smiles on their faces.
For the first time in 300 years, the cathedral in Mexico City's main plaza pulled an icon of the Lord of Health from storage, and worshippers placed it on the principal altar.

guys, don't derail this thread. I'm interesting in understanding what's going on, how and why. This is a terrible thread for a pointless pissing match. If you don't have anything to bring that we can all benefit/learn from please save it.
They reported on the news (Radio) this morning that in actuality 145 students went home in Queens, not 8. a girl from the school said she thought the figure of 8 was nonsense since many people were feeling ill and had to go home.

All that is being said and done reminds me of that scene in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS where the government wanted to scare people out of the town where they were planning to build a receiving station for the UFOs, so they cliamed there was some sort of bacteria/virus that was killing people and then to make the scene more believable the gov killed livestock and placed them all along the roadways so that people would see them and become afraid and leave....is this what is being done now??? More FEARMONGERING to control the masses? Kill some people in "other" countries and then claim there are signs the "disease" is in america and is going to kill MILLIONS if not controlled? As it stands NOT ONE PERSON IN AMERICA HAS DIED AND NO ONE HS BEEN ADMITTED TO A HOSPITAL....Hmmmmmm. Me smell a RAT....

Hmmmmmm...lemme see..an official comes to school and asks if there are any kids who are sick and says if they are they should go home....Wanna bet that all 150 students are healthy as an OX, but claimed sickness so they could go home!!!
Secondly notice no medical intervention was offered? Suppose these kids really had a HIGHLY INFECTIOUS DISEASE as this is being claimed to be....would any sensible doctor, law enforcement, official LET THEM GO HOME AND INFECT A TON OF PEOPLE ON THEIR WAY HOME???? Not to mention infect a lot of people if not everyone living in the home and/or apartment building? That is LOONESY. If there was a REAL infectious non-curable agent circulating, the kids and everyone else would be QUARANTINED IMMEDIATELY....not allowed to roam freely in the streets, subways, buses etc...

Does Obama know something and is subliminally telling you there is no swine flu???
Obama: Swine flu not a reason for 'alarm'

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Monday that the threat of spreading swine flu infections is a cause for concern but "not a cause for alarm" as the United States undertook close border monitoring to contain it.
"The Department of Health and Human Services has declared a Public Health Emergency as a precautionary tool to ensure that we have the resources we need at our disposal to respond quickly and effectively," Obama told a gathering of scientists, amid increasing worries worldwide about a possible pandemic.
The acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier Monday had said that people should be prepared for the problem to become more severe, and that it could involve "possibly deaths." Dr. Richard Besser said U.S. officials were questioning border visitors about how their health.
The quickening pace of developments in the United States in response to some 1,600 swine flu infections in neighboring Mexico was accompanied by a host of varying responses around the world. The European Union advised against nonessential travel to the United States and Mexico, China, Taiwan and Russia considered quarantines and several Asian countries scrutinized visitors arriving at their airports.
In the United States, a private school in South Carolina was closed Monday because of fears that young people returning from Mexico might have been infected.
"We are closely monitoring the emerging cases of swine flu in the United States," Obama said. "I'm getting regular updates on the situation from the responsible agencies, and the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the Centers for Disease Control will be offering regular updates to the American people so that they know what steps are being taken and what steps they may need to take."
"But one thing is clear: Our capacity to deal with a public health challenge of this sort rests heavily on the work of our scientific and medical community," the president said. "And this is one more example of why we cannot allow our nation to fall behind."

Aaaah yes, yet another great thing to come from south of the border.

Sometimes I swear that mask is going to be just as common as putting on a hat. I'm seeing more and more people with them on, even before this swine flu.

Drugs companies prepare for swine flu epidemic
Pharmaceutical stocks are expected to rise on Monday morning, after Roche and GlaxoSmithKline said they may need to supply millions of vaccine doses to help protect against the swine flu that has killed up to 81 people in Mexico.

The drugs were also used to help protect against outbreaks of bird flu in Asia, providing windfall profits for the companies.
Roche confirmed it already has a stockpile of 3m packs of Tamiflu ready for use by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Dude, you freaking moron, this is totally a nanobioweapen!!!. I'm now hearing from good sources this virus was released from a laboratory which held a captured UFO from an unknown system. The virus is reprogramming our DNA to match the alien DNA. It's an invasion but we'll actually become the aliens. By the time their mother ship gets here they'll have a familiar population.... I just got done watching a doctor on Lou Dobbs. He was talking about the good timing of this. Said that it's hitting at the end of the flu season here so it will die down but it'll come back much bigger in the fall, the good news, they'll have several months to get vaccinations mass produced for ya all... lol... They're scaring the shit out of people now so you'll all line up in the fall.

What I find most unusual about this flu is that it contradicts what I know about most viral strains, and that is the flu virus cannot live in the heat or warm climate. It can live in cool or cold air, but not hot or even warm weather... which is why you find most flu season happen October-December... not only is it cooler & the virus can survive, its coupled with peoples immunity being down with of the lack of exposure during spring & summer months. Rarely do you see the flu going around in late winter, early spring either because by that time, most people are immune having been exposed all fall/winter long.
It is going on MAY now, and the temps here in NYC are in the mid 80s for the last week... yet people here are catching it... closing schools etc.
How did this bug survive in Mexico? Are there currently any known flu strains that can survive a hot climate ???

I guess they actually do have a regular cold and flu season. It must get cold enough at night and I suppose depending on the location even more.

Beta-1,3/1,6-D-Glucan
Maitake mushroom
Great antivirals. Take these together at the onset or exposure to something
Vitamin C enhances effects, but can be taken without. Hope this helps you guys..I havent had a cold or flu since I discoved this 2 years ago.
Beta 1,3-D glucans are chains of D-glucose molecules, with the six-sided D-glucose rings connected at the 1 and 3 positions. Smaller side chains branch off the 1,3 polysaccharide “backbone.” The most active form of Beta 1,3-D glucans are apparently those that contain 1,6 side-chains branching off from the longer beta-1,3 glucan backbone. These are referred to as beta-1,3/1,6 glucan. Some researchers have suggested that it is the frequency, location, and length of the side-chains rather than the backbone of beta glucans that determine their immune system activity. Another variable is the fact that some of these compounds exist as single strand chains, while the backbones of other beta-1,3 glucans exist as double or triple stranded helix chains. In some cases, proteins linked to the beta-1,3 glucan backbone may also be involved in providing therapeutic activity. Although these compounds have exciting potential for enhancement of the immune system, it must be emphasized that this research is in its infancy, and there are differing opinions on which molecular weight, shape, structure, and source of beta-1,3 glucans provide the greatest therapeutic benefit.
One of the most common sources of Beta 1,3-D glucan for supplement use is derived from the cell wall of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). However, beta-(1,3)(1,4) glucans are also extracted from the bran of some grains such as oats and barley, and to a much lesser degree in rye and wheat. . The Beta 1,3-D glucans from yeast are often insoluble. Those extracted from grains tend to be both soluble and insoluble. Other sources include some types of seaweed,[1] and various species of mushrooms such as Reishi, Shiitake, and Maitake.[2]
Beta 1,3-D glucans are being referred to as biological response modifiers because of their ability to activate the immune system.[3] However, it should be noted that the activity of Beta 1, 3-D glucan is different from agents that stimulate the immune system. Agents that stimulate the immune system can push the system to over-stimulation, and hence are contraindicated in individuals with autoimmune diseases, allergies, or yeast infections. Beta 1, 3-D glucans seem to make the immune system work better without becoming overactive. They accomplish this by activating phagocytes, which are immune system cells whose function is to trap and destroy foreign substances in our bodies such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.[4] In addition to enhancing the activity of phagocytes, beta-1,3 glucans also reportedly lower elevated levels of LDL cholesterol, aid in wound healing, help prevent infections, enhance NK cell function, and help in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

good info!
I think their flu season usually ends in February. But with there being no immunity to this one, maybe that would account for it going longer.

Perfect breeding ground for swine viruses? Just checking.

It could also be a possiblilty that it would enhance your immunity to anything swine related. hmmm... something to think about!
I suppose you could bypass all of that and just eat the pigshit. As for me.. I will stick to the mushrooms... but let me know how it works for you :)

From the sites I've read, your defenses are down in cold seasons. I also read it's the better immune systems that will have a harder time with this flu.

From what Ive read, its not so much your defenses being down in the cold, but that its easier for the virus to LIVE. At the beginning of a cold season your defenses would be down because of lack of exposure. Im still trying to find out, and let me know if you do.. if theres any flu strain that can survive heat. Not only heat, but sunlight.
Some scary shit! not what I wanna think about before bed.. :( but thanks for the info.

I still think this is all being hyped way to much so don't worry yet. One doctor I listened to said he went through the documents on this in Mexico and it's been running for at least 3 months and he said maybe longer. So with that, the death toll is probably normal for the flu and the number infected might be vastly understated. I guess it won't hurt to follow flu precautions and remedies just in case tho.

ahaha, I was thinking you were going to recommend something else there for a second lol

Scared? Not really. In about 15 short minutes I'll have other things to keep myself occupied 8) but thanks..the concern is much appreciated!

Could this new swine flu virus have been manufactured by bioterrorists?
That's the theory on some conspiracy theorists' Web sites. But experts don't believe it.
"If you were a bioterrorist you'd want to create something that's a lot more deadly than this," said Dr. Gerald Evans, an associate professor of microbiology at Queen's University in Canada. "The problem with influenza is that the second you put it into people, it replicates and mutates very quickly. Even if you created the perfect bioweapon, within a few generations of transmissions, it wouldn't do what you planned for it to do."

I agree.
This isn't a "biological warfare event"
However if they ever make an airborne virus as lethal as ebola look out.

Eric R. Pianka (born 23 January 1939) is an American biologist, best known for his contributions to herpetology and evolutionary ecology. He is nicknamed "The Lizard Man".
Saving the Earth with Ebola
Professor Pianka said the Earth as we know it will not survive without drastic measures. Then, and without presenting any data to justify this number, he asserted that the only feasible solution to saving the Earth is to reduce the population to 10 percent of the present number.
He then showed solutions for reducing the world's population in the form of a slide depicting the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War and famine would not do, he explained. Instead, disease offered the most efficient and fastest way to kill the billions that must soon die if the population crisis is to be solved.
Pianka then displayed a slide showing rows of human skulls, one of which had red lights flashing from its eye sockets.
AIDS is not an efficient killer, he explained, because it is too slow. His favorite candidate for eliminating 90 percent of the world's population is airborne Ebola ( Ebola Reston ), because it is both highly lethal and it kills in days, instead of years. However, Professor Pianka did not mention that Ebola victims die a slow and torturous death as the virus initiates a cascade of biological calamities inside the victim that eventually liquefy the internal organs.
After praising the Ebola virus for its efficiency at killing, Pianka paused, leaned over the lectern, looked at us and carefully said, “We've got airborne 90 percent mortality in humans. Killing humans. Think about that.”
With his slide of human skulls towering on the screen behind him, Professor Pianka was deadly serious. The audience that had been applauding some of his statements now sat silent.
After a dramatic pause, Pianka returned to politics and environmentalism. But he revisited his call for mass death when he reflected on the oil situation.
“And the fossil fuels are running out,” he said, “so I think we may have to cut back to two billion, which would be about one-third as many people.” So the oil crisis alone may require eliminating two-third's of the world's population.
How soon must the mass dying begin if Earth is to be saved? Apparently fairly soon, for Pianka suggested he might be around when the killer disease goes to work. He was born in 1939, and his lengthy obituary appears on his web site.
When Pianka finished his remarks, the audience applauded. It wasn't merely a smattering of polite clapping that audiences diplomatically reserve for poor or boring speakers. It was a loud, vigorous and enthusiastic applause.

This resulted in the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewing Pianka in Austin.
Pianka has stated that Mims took his statements out of context and that Pianka was stating what would happen from biological principles alone if present human population trends continue, and that he was not in any way advocating for it to happen. The host of the speech, the Texas Academy of Sciences, has released a statement stating that:
"Many of Dr. Pianka's statements have been severely misconstrued and sensationalized."

You do know that the maitake mushroom has more than likely been grown in pig shit right?
Perfect breeding ground for swine viruses? Just checking.
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Why did you have to tell me....
