Title: Ed Van Amsterdam receives Olympia wild card?
Post by: axestream on May 25, 2009, 12:45:06 PM
It was just announced on a Dutch forum that Ed van Amsterdam has received a wild card for the 2009 Olympia. A good friend of Ed said that everyone who saw Ed backstage at the NY Pro was very impressed by his conditioning. He just didn't look as hard on stage bacause he wasn't tanned properly. He got 13th place.

I highly doubt that they would give anyone this year a Special Invite to the Olympia with a lot more shows to come, it is way too early.

If Ed Van Amsterdam wants to compete in the Olympia, he will need to qualify like anyone else.

I'm afraid this is for real. The guy who posted it is a long time friend of Ed and also the owner of the supplement company Performance which is sponsoring Clarence DeVis, Regiane DaSilva and Khalid Almohsinawi. He said Jim Manion himself had informed Ed about this wild card. The topic has now been deleted as requested by people in de Van Amsterdam camp. They didn't deny the topic starter had given false information. I'm thinking it probably wasn't mean to be made public yet because it doesn't look right (because it's not).

Bob, why are you so sure about this?
Was it agreed upon in one of the annual meetings that there are no more special invitations for the Olympia? (except for former mr O's?)
Who was the last one to get a wild card and when and for what reason?
Was it Gunther 2002 Olympia?
Title: Re: Ed van Amsterdam receives Olympia wild card
Post by: Chick on May 29, 2009, 05:10:51 AM
"special" invitations are reserved for special circumstances...i.e.- a former Mr. O wants to compete again, a top competitor gets injured and is unable to qualify due to it...etc.

I work on the Olympia production team with Robin Chang, thats how I am so sure

Ed was fortunate to receive an invitation to participate in the mr Olympia this year, this is ofcourse unbelievable, after years a dutch man is finally on the mr O stage again

Everybody can understand how excited Ed is about this, after a downfall last year, 2x in 1 year being operated on a double hernia and then making a comeback at the NY pro, 3 covershoots for the most important american magazines (MD, Flex, Musclemag) and an invitation for the mr O, well then you're still doing something very good.

NO ONE has a special invite to the Olympia this year.

Just curious, Bob.

What is the standard 2009 procedure for announcing an invitation to the O?

Is there a certain paper that would be filed, etc?  Some place where official invites are posted?

Chic is right on this one.

"It ain't gonna happen" are the exact words that were used to be more specific.

However, once again it is becoming painfully clear just how poor Chic handles his pr duties as an athletes representative. In a situation like this one needs to look after the interests of the athlete yet somehow he always manages to tarnish the reputation of said athlete and make it appear as if he is the union's representative.

One needs to look at the interests of ALL the athletes...and giving special invitesfor no good reason aint going to sit too well with any of the rest of them that are trying to qualify by placing at a Pro show...

NO invites are given for sponsor consideration...PERIOD.

Let me explain how it's done properly Chick:

1 ) Provide the link to the IFBB Pro Rules document

     http://www.ifbbprofessionalleague.com/IFBBProRules.pdf (http://www.ifbbprofessionalleague.com/IFBBProRules.pdf)

2 ) Print out the relevant section

    2.2 Invitation:
At all Pro League competitions, except for the Olympia competitions where the
Athlete must qualify to enter, the Promoter has the right to select those Pro
League Athletes he or she wishes to invite and to pay expenses for.

3 ) Let the people know you think Ed van Amsterdam is a great rolemodel and father and wish him well in future IFBB competitions

You're not explaining anything because under Rule 4.5 section 3 it says.

"3. The Promoter of the Mr. Olympia has the right to nominate one competitor,
as a “special invitee”, who has not qualified for the current year’s
Mr. Olympia competition. This competitor may compete only with the
approval of the Pro League."

So there is a rule in place which allows it. That's how Gunther compete in the 2002 Olympia.

But Chick has pointed out that Ed will not be the recipient of a special invite so either the promoter has not asked for one or the Pro League has denied it.

Dear Mr. Photo

I'm sure you are a fine gentleman who takes all kinds of lovely pictures of scarcely dressed young males and Louis Vitton is at the top of your wishlist this Christmas, but the point I was making concerned the art of being gracious in a potential hazardous situation ie pr.

However i would like to thank you for pointing out rule 4.5 section 3. This particular rules states 'This competitor may compete only with the approval of the Pro League.' which takes us back to my original post in this thread where I stated 'It ain't gonna happen' as a quote. Once again I would like to thank you for your input in this discussion and for being person 527 who has shown an interest in the rules of the IFBB Pro League.

If I didn't take the photos you'd have less to hang on your wall and as for "Louis Vitton", check your spelling. Personally I wouldn't consider paying that much for luggage.

The fact remains that there is a rule that allows for someone to receive a special invite.
There is precedent for it to happen.
Ed is sponsored by the title sponsor of the Mr Olympia.

"Ain't gonna happen" is looking more like "could happen".

And if it does, good luck to him. He's deserving as anyone.

What would be wrong with considering and then allowing a title sponsor's athlete to receive a special invite?
As the Athletes rep what would be your recommendation should this happen?
Title: Re: Ed van Amsterdam receives Olympia wild card

Why not?

It underminds the integrity of the qualifying process...if you allow it for one, then the line becomes much longer and convoluted as to who merits consideration and who doesn't.

The way it is now, you either qualify on your OWN merit, or you don't.  No gray area

The way it is now, you either qualify on your OWN merit, or you don't.  No gray area

But the rules explicitly allow for a special invite and it has been awarded before.
And whoever decided to include the rule didn't consider it to be undermining the integrity of the qualifying process so why are you?

But you are correct that there is no gray area - a special invite can be awarded to someone who has not qualified by other means.

So considering your position as IFBB Athletes rep and your opinion that the rule undermines the integrity of the qualifying process are you going to call for the rule to be removed?

But you are correct that there is no gray area - a special invite can be awarded to someone who has not qualified by other means.

But considering your position, are you going to call for the rule to be removed?

It's comical how Chick just pretends the "special invite" rule doesn't exist, yet it's right there in black and white.  It's part of the rules, and has been used before.

Yes, the rules allow for the promoter to submit for consideration a "special invite"...the rule has been in place for some time.

Unfortunately, the former "regime" didn't understand ( or chose not to) the intention of the rule, or who it was intended for.

Of course they didn't see it as undermining the integrity, they had their own self interests in mind...

Wasn't it Joe Weider who asked for the inclusion of Gunther?

If you consider the rule to be undermining the qualifying process, then shouldn't it be removed?

No one said it doesn't exist, moron....

What I said was that it should only be used in special circumstances (injury) or a former Mr. Olympia, etc....not some sponsor consideration

It WAS used before...by your buddy Wayne, for the wrong reasons...which the other athletes didn't appreciate very much

Joe, or Wayne...

The rule isn't undermining if given to the proper individual (who is deserving)....merely giving it to an athlete because their company is a sponsor would be....as would any joe blow that just didn't get the qualification by competing.

Personally I think it would only be undermining if the sponsor asked for a non IFBB athlete to be allowed to compete.

Of course all those who don't get an invite will be pissed  ;D ;D ;D ;D

You don't need to have a masters in order to become a Physician's Assistant.  Most PA programs consist of a 4 year B.S. route, whereas you do 2 years of prerequisites, followed by 2 years of PA related course work.  Why she is getting a masters to become a PA is a bit confusing.

In that case, that's great!  Some states already allow PAs to open up their own practices or to even collaborate with an attending physician in a office thereby seeing their own patients, so I think she will have great opportunities.  In the past, PAs were designated only to hospital settings, but today they have many options.

Every pro show is a qualifier

Promoters (like me) promote them.
Athletes (like Ed) compete.
Placegetters (Top 3 or 5) qualify for Olympia.
Sponsors (like Ed's) sponsor shows.
Athletes rep (Bob) helps athletes and promoters.

nobodies (like Goatboy) post 20000 stupid posts and never qualify, promote, represent or sponsor anything

Nobody gets a free ride and why should they.

I comprehend that poor Ed Van Amsterdam was packing his bags for Vegas, fulfilling his lifelong dream of competing in the Olympia, until you took a big dump all over it.  >:(

Last time I checked you are supposed to earn a spot at the Olympia... Cut out the Fairness act with the whole Olympia invite. If he didn't place high enough at a show, he shouldn't be in the Olympia. Next thing you know he will be asking for a freaking Bailout because he blew his money on Steroids.

Unless your sponsor also sponsors the Olympia, of course.

This is not unprecedented.  There have been lots of "special invites" over the years.

To people that are deserving like Shawn Ray, Levrone, etc.  Ed is good but not great.

back tracking by a puppet .. at his best

torn between slamming wayne and kissing joe's ass

Joe, or Wayne...

The rule isn't undermining if given to the proper individual (who is deserving)....merely giving it to an athlete because their company is a sponsor would be....as would any joe blow that just didn't get the qualification by competing.

Wayne was the promoter, Gunter was a conracted athlete...

Why would I need to kiss Joe's ass?  He hasn't been involved in years...

Weider was the sponsor. He told the promotor "give gunter a special invite"

now try and spin your way out of that.

you wouldn't be where you were if it weren't for kissing joes ass.

why do puppets try and confuse their way out of the truth?

Why do puppets looking to move up in the IFBB. even attempt to sound like they have any scruples ?

I
The promoter reserves the right to invite....pretty clear and simple

Where is the inconsistancy?

Are you REALLY having a tough time figuring this one out?  Do you need me to dumb it down for you a few notches?

the IFBB didn't have a problem handing out invites annually to Gunter
but now the IFBB (i.e. puppets like you) are up in arms over someone else getting one.

That is called inconsistent.

hope this helps.

Chick isn't "spinning" anything.

The rule is there to allow the promoter the option of asking for an athlete to be given a special invite.

It is not a rule forcing him to apply for one.

If the promoter recommends an athlete for one, it is still the IFBB who decide if it's awarded.

Gunther was the last person to get one so the lack of special invites has actually been consistent since 2002. And although special invites have been awarded in the past it is still down to the promoter to request one. He's not forced to.

It's a good thing Lee and Milos have been reinstated now, so you can spend more of your valuable time as Athlete's Rep working tirelessly to keep Ed Van Amsterdam out of the Olympia.  I know Ed appreciates your efforts...  it's not like he really wanted to compete in bodybuilding's biggest show or anything. :D

Consistent since when? 2002 !

oh wow! the IFBB is consistent for at least 7 years in a row.
the olympia has been going on for how long? over 40 years.

Gunter consistently got in, year in year out. No problem with the IFBB.
Ed requests one, big problem with the IFBB.

Was Ed not marketable enough ?
