so since I am on a break of heavy lifting for 2-3 weeks, I decided to go for a max with 135 lbs on the squat after I saw the guys at MD saying the did 84 reps with it.
well damn it at 32 reps I couldn't take it anymore but somehow continued to 35 reps.
I was gasping for air, my lungs were burning, I couldn't control my abs anymore and my quads were burning
worst experience ever
and I call BS on the 84 reps from the dude on the MD boards.
-
I usually do like 40 reps in a drop set on leg curls and it feels like im dying, and Branch does 100 for warmup :/
-
84@135 without pause is pretty crazy, but it's doable. Hitting 84 reps on squats would be more of a test of cardio than strength if your a seasoned squater, i think. I guess it would depend on the individual. Someone like Lance Armstrong, whose VO2 max is off the charts, would have an easier time than most with a relatively equal amount of weight.
I'm a fan of high rep deep squats. I was experiencing knee issues from years of heavy squats & leg presses, so about 18 months ago I jumped on high rep squats, in the 12-25+ rep range. Maybe going as low as 6 about once a month. I found my legs lost no size compared to the low rep schemes, and my knees really appreciated it. Currently I spend almost as much time on warming up the legs as I do on working sets, and my legs are the best they've been. Not to mention it's great for the lungs. (I shouldn't say currently, as I've been out of the gym for 6 weeks now :'().

High rep squat are a real killer!
84 with 135 is very do-able!
My friend here does 50 reps with 100kg (220) after doing warm ups and 180, 200, 220, 240 and 250 kg.
Could use an inch or two more in debth, but after leg extensions and all the squats his legs were toast!
-
legs allow pussy lifting to work well... i like training legs low reps and heavy weight... but when i do that they only get harder not bigger... so i do lots and lots of sets.. probably around 50 sets for quads hams aductor abductor glutes and calves...

I remember a youtube vid with some guy doing 225 for 100 reps :o

I remember reading something years ago about how Arnold and The Boyz used to carry a bunch of equipment, weights, bitches, beer and whatever els to the forest and have 'Midnight Squat Parties'.
It gave me an idea. I followed suit and rounded up a couple dudes and had a 'Midnight Squat Party' myself back in 2004. (oh, brother! ::) )
I made sure I had bananas, protein powders, creatine and some Haterade. The goal was 1000 reps with 135lbs.
There was 3 of us so we agreed we would each do 100 sets of 10 reps.
It took us until about 5am but we did it. At some points it felt numb after a while. I remember we went to a neaby 24/7 Greek style diner and ate platters of steak and pancakes and were almost falling asleep at the table.
That morning I slept and woke up 13hrs later. I was so stiff and sore I was crippled until Tuesday and had to load on Tylenol, Ibuprofren and whatever els.
Needless to say it didn't put an inch on my quads. My quads still suck.

Me too!
A lot of people might have difficulty doing 100 full range body-weight squats.

High reps for legs work wonders, and i have to agree with stavios, im calling total bullshit on those guys from MD's claim that they did 135 for 84 reps...........most of those dudes also say they are all over 200lbs natural and have sub 8% bf. ::)
-
Every time i do high rep squats I piss out my ass about 3-4 hrs later :-\

Here's a neat one, Ken Leistner with #407lbs for #23 reps. He's in his 40's and 160-170lb range for this-

Take the rules and throw them out of the window, they are of no use here! With
those out of the way, I’d like to take you back to a time when insanity was sanity,
and we thrived on it!
This Quote by Arnold Schwarzenegger is from 1975
"I finally arrived at the idea of shocking the muscles. So once a week I took a
training partner and drove out into the country with the weights. We limited
ourselves to one exercise for a particular body part. I remember for the first day we
carried 250 pounds into the forest and did squats for two hours straight. I began by
doing 20 repetitions with 250 pounds; then my partner did whatever he could. Then
it was my turn again. We ended up doing something like 55 sets of squats each. The
last hour seemed endless. But it worked. Our thighs pumped up like balloons. That
first day we gave our thigh muscles such a shock that we couldn't walk right for a
week and each of us put something like an eighth or a quarter of an inch on our
thighs; they just blew up. They had no chance to survive except to grow. We made it
a regular thing. We brought girls out there to cook. We made a fire outdoors and
turned the whole thing into a little contest. We worked hard, but we had a good
time. After the muscle-shocking sessions, we drank wine and beer and got drunk and
carried on like the old-time weightlifters sometimes it be came pure insanity."
What Arnold displayed here was the mentality of a warrior. However it went beyond
this, well beyond! The man had an undying passion for this sport, and it shown
through in perhaps an unmatched way. This story has always fascinated me and I
have actually applied it to myself in many ways. So much so, that I developed a "
modern day “ Austrian Blitz! My main objective was to take a weight training
session and turn it into a fun and challenging event!

84x135 without a pause is crazy-strong and fit in my opinion. I doubt I could do much more than 20 without pausing.
-
About every 10-12 weeks I will have my guys do "hundreds" on all body part. It more complicated than I just described but we do it for muscular endurance and to help break through lactate threshold. We (most of my athletes) will follow it from 4-6 weeks. Another theorie is that it creates hyperplasia (cell division). I modified it, but its a theorie that dates back almost 25 years ago. MaxRep knows of this.

I'm seriously having a hard time trying to understand why you think it BS that someone can do 84x135!!!

Maybe I am just a pussy and my cardio sucks ass but seriously, I can't imagine ever doing more than 50 reps with 135 lbs !
I can squat 405lbs a few times but the 135lbs x 35 was much harder for me :o

Hahahaha!
Not just a squat party, but a "Midnight Squat Party"!
Sounds like something you might find in BayGBM's dvd collection.

I think the video with Jesse Marunde's partner (Sarge or something?) was pretty damn inspiring.
The guy had worked up to trying his body weight (I believe it was 218?) for a 100 reps. Not sure how long he'd trained for it, but they video'd the day it was to be achieved. It's a lesson in persistence, desire and will to want something so bad.
He got all the way to 98 reps, while having to take long pauses between reps, gasping for air and you can see how difficult this was. He failed, nearly passed out, and got up for one last try but he was spent.
Still one of the most inspiring things I've ever watched, even though he didn't meet his goal.

Wow that is amazing. Nice vid!

I got terrible headaches during my high-rep squat program a couple months ago. I think I was pinching a nerve in my neck with the bar sitting there for so long. Anyone else ever have this problem?
-
The only problem i used to get from high rep squats (50 reps) was that my arms would get pins and needles in them from holding them up over the bar for a long time.

YES!!!!!!
Exactly what happened to me also
-
I did 50+ reps with 135 a few years ago and could not walk right for about 3 days.
I have seen a 140 pound woman squat 135 for 40 reps before, pretty amazing.
I think high rep squat workouts have their place in training for sure.

My,56 years old, ass to grass squats! (110 KG (245 Lbs) X 21 Reps)
-
Even being as light as 135, 150 reps is insane!!!
He knocks them out pretty quick, sets of 5-10-20 at a time from what I can tell.
And he uses no spotters, nor does he fail.
I cannot imagine what he felt like the next couple of days! :o :o :o

I find it hilarious that "high rep" squats with 135 lbs is that difficult for so many getbiggers. No disrespect, but 135 lbs feels like you are doing no weight at all on a squat....its a very very easy warmup for anyone that squats regularly.
I used to do 20 rep squats with 275 lbs and even 315 lbs. Not a terribly difficult task.
This is GetBig after all..... ::) ::) ::)
That being said, when most members say it's hard to lift 135 X amount of times, it's not because the weight is hard, it's because the cardio.
Also to take into consideration is whether it's your first exercise, last and how long it takes you to do the entire set.
If you walk into the gym and bang out 135 for 20, it's far different than just completing dropsets on Hack squats, supersetting leg extensions with front squats and then knocking out 20 reps with 135...doing do all of this with no more than a minute rest between sets.

honnestly, I have trouble running for 30 seconds without getting out of breath.
so yeah I struggled, my lungs were in deep pain :o
I need to get in shape

I'll try 50 lbs for 135 reps next week.

Lets face it, bodybuilders and gym rates r pussy's compared to strength/endurance athletes :)

No one says that a guy with the very speedy 40 yard dash can run 5 miles in "x" minutes based on his time on the 40 yard dash. We understand that running for speed and running for distance are two very different things.
But when it comes to weight training, some lifter will always state that a guy with a 500 lb. bench can do 400 lbs. "x" times, and 300 lbs. "y" times, as if there was some "human strength schedule" that applied to everyone.
I trained with guys who could out bench me with ease, but I could do more reps with 225 lbs. I've always been better at reps, (as well as distance in running).
Squatting 135 lbs for 85 reps just doesn't sound so superhuman to me. You get in a groove on reps, as you would running for distance.
-
I train legs once a week and once every 6 weeks or so I do high rep squat/leg press workout. Volume training your quads is mandatory for size. During the regular weeks I rarely ever drop below 6 reps and always squat ass to calves. These are high bar squats with a shoulder width foot stance. I keep good posture and minimize waist bend.
In the high rep week (after warm up) I will alternate workouts between 3 X 135 X 100 with 2 X 225 X 50.
If you're only doing low rep powerlifting squats you will end up with carrot shaped thighs.
Oh...and since this is GetBig....I bang porn stars and text message Nasser while I'm doing it.
-
my squat routine from back in the day no bull. 135 20 reps warmup. next set 225 40 or more reps, next set 315 by 25 or so 405 by 10 , 455 by 5 than singles with 505 lbs. now after 6 hip replacement surgeries i don't work legs much anymore.

Only things missing were assless chaps and Club Lorenzo. :)
Even though all chaps, by definition, are assless.

great work

I have always trained quads with a higger volume approach. Normally do 20 rep squats, or i will go kinda heavy on squats but then go straight to leg presses and go till failure.

brutal how is climbing the steps at the library after that?

brutal how is climbing the steps at the library after that?
Probably pretty easy after a brutal heavy set of 135 x 20
-
I do heavy squats with hardcore high rep squats or sissy squats afterward.
Nothing feels better than being humbled by tiny ass weights, but WORKING hard for it as well. Big difference between the pussies that just lift tiny weights for puny reps and sets. 8)

I've tried this twice and never been able to make it all the way...
The Challenge: 200 reps of squats with 225 lbs, using as many sets as needed!
First time I did It I died at rep number 168
Second time I did I died at 170-something!
Got a few friends that made it - but they got fucking tree trunks for legs!
-
Personally I feel the light weight, less than 225lbs high rep squats are pointless. Would rather see someone do 315 for 20 or so. That will give the good results.

Not to say that 80-whatever reps with 135 is not impressive, but it sort of seems to me to be similar to guys who can do xxx pushups. I'm more impressed by someone who can bench big weight a few times; same story for squats.
-
I got terrible headaches during my high-rep squat program a couple months ago. I think I was pinching a nerve in my neck with the bar sitting there for so long. Anyone else ever have this problem?
yes i had that too, an intense headache, dropped me right on the floor, it happened at 44 reps in the hacksquat.never doing that shit again. next couple of workouts it came back a little so i got to the doctor, you can get a brainvessel popped that way. Anything above 25 reps for legs is doing you more harm than good. its stupid training going ultra high reps. only exception is forearm training imo. i often doo 100 reps for a particular excersize. its when you hold dumbells and rotate your wrists left and right.(not in and out) you get a crazy pump that way and forearms respond very good on high reps.
-
Impressive...!!!
Big weight, lots of reps, grinding it out, dumping the bar...best part of the video (not mocking, I LOL'd) was when you're on your 38th rep or so (1:52 is the time stamp) just wanting to die and your breath is heavy, there's a guy doing lunges behind you with what looks to be all of 60lbs! :D
-
coupl of guys in those videos doing very impressive lifts, yet they both look like completely average dudes, no real development at all. a testament to the fact that while naturals cant get yoked, they can get strong.. ??
-
Irish dude: is that you? Pretty fucking impressive.
haha.....No. I wish.
-
I was thinking that too tbombz. Kind of weird.
Case in point the guy in the video nearest above. Droopy mantits, gut, legs don't look particularly built, yet he can perform an impressive squatting feat.

I had this exact same thing I believe, after doing a set of light squats in the smith machine. The pain lasted several weeks for me.. whenever I did something physical to raise my heartbeat/bp I got this excruciating pain in the back of my neck. So it's possible I've could have been in danger of popping a brain vessel?

dont expect to be able to do high reps of anything at a decent weight if you spend all your time training at lower reps.
youll need to go through a few weeks of higher reps to get to decent poundages.
does no one listen at GB?
the comments about high reps not being useful are just dumb also.
typical moronic monkey read, monkey say comments from GB members.

I have read quite a few succes stories with high reps for leg growth so I decided why not give it a try ?
like I said I am pretty strong on legs exercises, wich I think gave them a hard and separated look but maybe high reps will give them more size
I don't know, I am doing a few weeks of high reps anyway so we will see

YES that, same thing for me this summer, headache so painful you cant do nothing but drop on the floor and hold your head in pain..sound extreme but its true, not sure why you get that but happen only when BP start going high. stopped gym and everything for one week and it was alright after. anyone have more info about this ??
-
My headache appeared suddenly one day (on about rep #15 of a 20-rep squat set). It was not unbearable pain but was in a very specific part of my head, and was uncomfortable enough that I usually couldn't finish. It would return every time I worked legs (or did rows, never could figure that out). Lasted for a couple weeks before I went to a doctor. She ruled out an aneurysm, said it was probably a stress headache or irritated nerve in my upper back, gave me some prescription pain killers, and said to lay off anything that brought on the headaches for a week.
They went away after that and haven't returned (this was a couple months ago) but I haven't done any squat sets of over 10 reps since then. I'm certain if I tried to do 80 reps with any weight my head would explode.

Holy shit I was not the only one. We all seem to have one thing in common and that is doing light squats so fuck that.
-
sick reps and hard work right there. That guy is doing deep squats also, takes a bunch of fortitude to stick with that.
Moderate weight like that being used and high reps will really push your core as you can see in the vids. The trainee's core gave out before his legs.

Yeah I've been doing sets of six since then and no headaches. Fuck high rep squats.

One thing did seem odd though. The plates are rumbling sweet music like only metal plates can do. But to me those look like those rubber coated plates in the strange shape like I have at my gym. They make no noise whatsoever. :-\

I admit I was too fat in those videos. If you look at one of my more recent videos, you can see that I actually have quite a bit of muscular development. Not as much as a high level bodybuilder, but respectable for a powerlifter:
One thing did seem odd though. The plates are rumbling sweet music like only metal plates can do. But to me those look like those rubber coated plates in the strange shape like I have at my gym. They make no noise whatsoever. :-\
The plates may look rubber coated, but they weren't. There are several high level powerlifters who I train with who can attest to the fact that my lifts are real. If you look in this video, I'm using calibrated Eleiko plates, that are accurrate down to 0.1%:
I hope to be able to beat Tom Platz's 500x23 within the next year.

oh the drama in the end... :D

Hi, I'm the guy in the videos that were posted above of squatting 315x42 and 405x26. Thanks for checking out my videos.

You are in better shape there and look good man. Great job on those squats! 500x11 set was insane, that last rep I'm very surprised you went for it, takes tons of courage and concentration to go for that last rep at that point in the set, most would have stopped sooner. Thats the thing most trainees when squatting will give up too soon, well before failure. The way you push it is inspiring. Good luck in the meet bro you are an animal

Wow :o :o....very impressive!! Especially that heavy with no wraps......Shit, i wear braces and wraps when i squat. How long you been training for??

Wow :o :o....very impressive!! How long you been doing powerlifting for??
I've been lifting on and off for the past 9 years. I used to compete in strongman, but it's only in the past year that I've gotten serious about powerlifting.

wow impressive. i bet you could lift alot more in the 1 rep max if you didn't do that 20 rep set before.

Great lifting, well done!
-
Awesome lifting! Finally someone who actually lifts correctly and does full reps. Great job!

I have read quite a few succes stories with high reps for leg growth so I decided why not give it a try ?
like I said I am pretty strong on legs exercises, wich I think gave them a hard and separated look but maybe high reps will give them more size
I don't know, I am doing a few weeks of high reps anyway so we will see
thats the point, you have to give it a few weeks in that regime for it to become learnt..then the reps and poundages go up dramatically. But when people say high reps, it should be kept to no more than 30-40. Beyond that IS an aerobic workout.
a high rep workout once every once in a while does nothing but smash your neurons and put you into overtraining.

i squatted for 6 minutes straight before with 140ish lbs on my back trying to rehabilitate it. Stragly I was not that sore at all the next day

For what it is worth...
I'm pretty tall (well over 6 foot) and have chicken legs naturally.
I habge tried numerous approaches to quad training over many years and granted, probably didn't stay with the different routines long enough to really properly test them out. However what I did find out was the following:
based entirely on my own experience - my max has always been around 300 pounds deep squats for reps (when training naturally which has been 90% of my training years which is since 1989 so a good deal of years).
The best way to grow my quads (bar juice which by the way was incredible) was to take my max, which like I say is usually 300 pounds and focus just entirely on that. Do whatever pyramiding up to it - usually 135 x 20, 225 x 20, 265 x 15 then the meat and potatoes sets. Always do 10 plus sets including the lead up sets (10 min and then whatever I can make happen on the given day).
So - I know that even on a bad day I can do 8 reps of 300. I also know that I can then do a further 6 sets of 6-8 (I could be struggling but so what).
What I try and do is go for broke and knock out just as many reps on the 1st and 2nd sets of 300 as possible. There was a time when I got the reps up to 20-25 and then over the last 3-4 sets would be getting about 12 reps a set. Didn't go heavier as the work load was so intense that if I had i would start to use too mcuh back and hams etc.
But what i found was that by gradually pushing for those extra reps but staying at my chosen maximum weight I gained more quad size than at any other time barring taking gear.
As it happens I'm off to train my matchsticks tonight. Hopefully it'll go to plan tonight.
Oh - and by the way - when I tried doing much higher reps on lighter weights I found that my legs didn't grow but definately got alot harder and seperated - but not bigger.

Great lifting blenderate, thanks for a bit of real motivation.

Blenderate> You're a beast man! Props

pyramiding up is a complete waste of time and energy.
'nuff said.
