Title: Better phone I-PHONE or DROID?
Post by: El Diablo Blanco on December 07, 2009, 10:43:37 AM
Looking to upgrade from crappy blackberry curve.  Email is great but that's about it.  I was thinking about the storm 2 as well but heard awful reviews about the keyboard.

Mods please leave for a couple of days before moving this thread.  Thanks

THat being said, i love the droid.  Super great phone.  30 mins of camera action!  Tons of apps etc.   GPS is really cool too..

Iphone slays almost anything out there, I have a blackberry bold and an iphone... the iphone is nuts, the amount of apps available for it is fucking ridiculous, it's the most intuitive thing to use ever invented, it's almost like it reads your mind, they virtual keyboard is awesome, I write texts and emails on it, wi-fi, web browsing , instant email (like blackberry) weather, etc. etc. etc.

Almost forgot best 2 options of iphone/ipod touch..  built in GPS + google maps/virtual earth
and you get a free built in ipod... also super crisp bright as hell display that doubles as a flashlight in the dark. (seriously, I've used it for this purpose.)

Iphone is probably the better of the two mostly since a lot of developers with MAC and Apple experience write APPS for the phone. You are better off getting an IPhone. Droid is very new and the kinks haven't been work out yet.

Mobility is my career..

True. Verizon will probably give the droids away when the Droid 2 comes out.

Ha, 2 nights ago, my power went out, and I used my iPhone as a flashlight.

I use my blackberry in the mornings as a flashlight to navigate to my car in the garage.  LOL.  There's actually a free flashlight app that gives you different colors.

I have a G1 that is similar to the droid, but I am waiting until the droid 2 or something like that before I switch. All my friends have Iphones and I still like my G1 better.

I have to give it to apple, as much as I hate apple...the design and ingenuity that went into the iphone is nothing short of miraculous, never had a device this intuitive before, so well planned out, the way it responds to your movements/actions, even when the screen readjusts automatically when you switch from holding it vertically to horizontally is amazing, I love the thing, I use it to catch up on my email and nextday's weather when I'm lying in  bed falling asleep and don't feel like using the bigger bulkier laptop.

You may want to look at the Tilt2 as well. It is a Windows mobile PDA.. Great phone and internet rocks on the AT&T network. I am using the HTC fuze right now, but as soon as I can upgrade it is the Tilt2 or the Iphone.

Windows Mobile phones have a built in Internet Sharing program that can be easily unlocked to work without purchasing the tethering package so you can connect it to your laptop and surf from there.... For the Iphone to do this you have to stop a certain service each time and open a web browser and connect to Wap.cincular.com. Makes it very cumbersome to tell you the truth.

Iphone has the best Touch screen on the market as well. This is a big issue with all the Samsung touch screen phones that have not mastered the technology. wrong words spelled typos and all sorts of issues. Iphone rocks in this department.

Dude, my jaw dropped when I first tried the keyboard on my friend's iphone to send a text... it was flawless... and before I got one I'd been using Palm Treo's (touchscreen) for about 6 years, back to back from the 500's through the 600's all theway to the 700wx, the touchscreen on the palms is a goddamn disgrace compared to the iphone,  that thing is like MAGIC!!! I also tried a blackberry storm but just laughed at it in comparison to the iphone.

Are you really surprised though!?! the thing is one big ass full color, bright as hell screen... I'd say it's pretty damn impressive compared to the batteries of 10 years ago, just charge yours overnight as your sleeping, that's what I do with all my phones.

I have an iPhone and love it but must admit it is a bit homoerotic.

Also yes to a couple posts up, the battery doesn't hold a charge for more than a few days, but it also seems to charge up to a useable state very quickly.

Drois does it all and you get the VZW Network which is far superior. As far a GPS, free Google Maps with heads-up navigation. The device is unbelievable. Also it has a tactile keyboard on top of touch.

Also, the iPhone doesn't have a removable battery. If the battery malfunctions - a whole new device is needed.

Two reasons I will not get an iPhone:

1) No removable battery
2) They're for fags

Hope this helps!

The droid is a nice consumer device... Sucks if you use a corporate email server though.

The Verizon network is a little larger, not really THAT much though, but when in AT&T 3g coverage, the service is actually better. The AT&T 3g network is definitely better than the EVDO network of Verizon. You can use internet services while talking on the phone... You can't do that on the EVDO network.

The EVDO availability is way larger than the AT&T 3g network though... You end up on AT&Ts edge network a lot if you're not in a major metropolitan area.

As far as apps are concerned... right now... The iphone is the app king... Games and Usable utilities included.

The droid map and directions app is the bomb though... but that's really just the one singular thing I love on the droid over the iphone.

I have to deal with exchange activesync and corporate email though... so I'm sticking with the iphone for now.

Hehe, droid seems bigger and bulkier, more squarish looking..I  like how suave the iphone is, if you want to call a cool customizable chrome and black phone gay....well then you have some issues.

I understand if it was hot pink, but come on now...

I have an iphone and a driod...I've had he driod since the day it came out.  It's not rocket science.  It' better for business and I think it performs better as a whole.  It took me all of 2 days to learn how to use it.  The Iphone is cool, but the Driod does everything the Iphone does...plus you get much better service, it's cheaper (with the data package for business) and it's got a regular keyboard to go along with the touch screen.

False, I'd say I make an 5k due to my mobile devices each year.  Smart phones allow one to conduct business on the run and to get more done.  If your in business, the outlook connect to your corp email and outlook calender + contacts is a must.  Also, apps like the traffic app (shows current traffic conditions) save time and that's not even getting into the ultra fast web browsing.  If your just sending and receiving calls, you've got a point.  That said, you can pick up a new Driod for a couple hundred bucks and considering what it does, thats peanuts.

If you need a phone for business (and are not self employed) your company will provide you with the neccesary tools to conduct business - if they don't give you a "smart"phone you probably don't need it.

Nothing scream ignorant like the post above.  I take it you've never worked for a large cooperation before?  What exactly does being "on call" mean? Ha-ha, that alone proves you have no idea how a smartphone could help an executive with business.  Let me guess, you write appointments in a planner and keep track of all your email via your desktop. Nothing screams unsuccessful drone more than some goofball walking around with a planner and telling their client, boss, business partner they missed that ultra important email, because they didn't have access to their desktop.  Btw, please give me examples of major cooperations providing their employees with Iphones.  To get ahead in any game you have to be smarter than the next guy and outwork your competition.  Successful companies don't want losers who have to be provided with extra tools to succeed.  It's not cost effective, and the worthwhile people will get it done on their own via organizational methods and personal business plans.  For some that includes a smartphone to stay organized and be connected.

It seems like you enjoy your free time posting on a virtual Internet community.  The wonders of technology, right Stark!?

In Starks defense, most McDonald employees don't need a smart phone so from his point of view it's not necessary.  he's happy with his plastic Mayor McCheese glow in the dark cell phone that has different animal sounds with each button he presses.

HAHAHA, someone claiming they don't need a phone with a web browser but has a gazillion posts and lives on getbig and other sites.  Oh please!
How do you spend your free time?  Ranting?

The little time I have in my break I come here - I need a good laugh now and then.
And I never said I don't need a blackberry or any smart phone for that matter ;) but the difference is I don't spend my hard earned cash on it - I got one from my company ;)

Its guys like yourself that I don;t understand - you know you gonna buy yourself the newest of the new phone and you be a happy camper for what? 1 week maybe 4? what then? What after the time when the "new" toy has become normal? Yep you've got it you look for some other comercial kick.

Like I said - phones and smart phones have their place in the business world but I doubt it that they really are needed in your freetime.
People need to take their eyes of their little or big screen once in a while or have we become so fucking empty that we constantly have to chat and twitter and share our information with the rest of the world all our little privat details in order to feel wanted and needed?
Cuz make no mistake here folks thats why pages like twitter and facebook are so successfull - because peoples life are completly and utterly empty.
Go for a hike - go see nature - go outside - switch of your mobile phone for 1 day only and see what happens - Nothing - apart from some dippshits that complanined that you weren't "availible" ::) nothing happens - the world is still rotating you have still your job and you're still alife.
I had my smart phone all the time as well - but I made a point but just forcing myself to turn the fucking thing off as soon as I leave work - and it has calmed me down a lot.

The wonders of technology, right Stark!?

sorry didn't read all your post - but I can assure you you're wrong - I work for a large company - not saying I like it and not saying I have a very high position.
I don't lie on getbig ;)

Don't take this all personal gloria but most of you guys and your warm attempts to make getbig believe that the world will end if you're not connected some way or form with the internet is just simply bullshit.

The guy is checking his phone all the time - Oh nobody wrote me - 5 min later - Oh still no answer - God damit I better write a text quickly and check my facebook account if somebody has noticed me ::)

FWIW, since the 5.0 OS update the Blackberry Storm has been a great phone for me.

The trouble was, I got it when it came out, and it took a year and the release of the Storm 2 for them to get the original Storm right.

It is now the phone I thought it would be when I bought it.  The iPhone touchscreen and browser are still superior, but the gap has been narrowed, and I enjoy the functionality of a BB.

i'm kinda agreeing with stark on this..i don't know many people out there that need all these things that new phones offer..been in the IT world close to 12 years and most of the dimwits that 'think' they need this shit are usually the dumb fucks that lose, destroy, fuck up, or just completely have no idea how the hell to use these gadgets...i've worked with doctors, lawyers, execs, and these people have no clue wtf is going on with this shit...let me tell you--there's no lawyer out there dicking around with documents on a fucking iphone.

Who cares?  I have a Blackberry Bold 9700, and it works in China, Europe, and probably on the fuccking moon.  AND it has a removable battery, AND it isn't a phone for queer pansy-boys like the "iPhone" is.

DITTO. Iphone = toy for kids. Blackberry 9700 =real phone .....and the battery lasts for fucking ever! unlike on the Iphone. I use it heavily and it usually keeps going for about 2-3 days.

I don't know about some of you other guys, but I have 2 smartphone's, and to be honest I use most of the features on most of them, I do sometimes check facebook on them, if I'm sitting in a restaurant waiting for my food or on the can,  I will surf a web site or two and answer/check my emails, best thing about BB is blackberry messenger, then again Iphone has a multi chat app on it that supports MSN, so... and I do also use the calendar's in my phones to book appointments and date's. Whoever said the phones are getting too much has their head up their ass..

you might be better off with this.

I have a droid and absolutely love it.  I have been with Verizon for a few years now and have used a few of their smart phones (i760, omnia, storm) and this is by far the best one.   It really is a coin flip as to which one you get and most are usually stuck on a contract already at one company or the other and that dictates which one they get.

The main thing that Droid has behind it is google.  They are changing up everything ab out the internet and you can expect it to trickle down to their phones, so i expect their phones to only get better as time goes on.

You really got to have a PDA if you are going to be successful in any type of industry where you need to be in contact with your clients, e-mail, easy internet access, etc.  I am in sales and my PDA's have always made me wayy more money then i could ever care about their cost.  I honestly would not function as efficiently without one this day and age.  I don't have a face book account, myspace account or twitter, or could even care less about that shit but the choice of applications, games and other just random stuff on my Droid really helps make my slow times during the day (waiting in line, taking a shit, etc)  much more fun.

Stark- go out and buy a droid or iphone and i bet you would find a ton of fun and useful things to do with it outside all the online communities you are dogging on.

I've had the HTC Hero for about three weeks now - it's an Android phone and it rocks - applications are practically all free and there's hundreds of them - I can't really compare it to an I-Phone because I've never owned one but if you're looking for an I-Phone replacement or alternative then it is definitley worth considering. There's nothing you can't do on it - great for lurking on Getbig too!

Yeah, it's no better than my old Motorola phone for battery life - I have to charge it every single day but as long as you leave the GPS, internet and wi-fi disabled (which defeats the object) then you can get about three days worth of battery out of it without any problems.  :-\

Look its real simple...

First of all I don't hold a low position in my company but I am not the type of guy that pretends that I am on the top - I don't do that.
But I have a leading position thats all I am saying - and in general you are doing a stupid thing you are putting words in my mouth which I never said - or where did I say that I hold a low position.... see what I mean.

Second, and pay attention this time, I have no problem with having a smart phone if it is really needed - I have said so on a couple of occasions, but I think its pathetic if somebody buys himself the latest gadget so he/she can stay connected all the time surfing facebook and twitter.
Thats my personal opinion.

So to make it easy for you

Business use - absolutly
Privat use - pathetic

I have an iPhone and I enjoy it.  But I have to admit, with all it has to offer, I really don't use it anywhere to its potential.  Hell, I didn't even use my old Blackberry to its potential. At first they're fun to play with, but in the end, I use it mainly as a phone and not much else other than the occasional picture.

thats exactly what I mean - I have learned in my life that most things you buy become kinda lame and non interesting after some time.

I think a huge mistake a lot of people (including myself) make is that they confuse need with want.

I need a new phone, is in most cases not true unless the old phone is broken or you realy need an upgrade to conduct your work.

When ever I buy something I try to remind myself - Do I really need this or do I want this? i'm not saying that its easy or that I always succeed :D I still buy stupid shit at times :P

Time ranks Motorola Droid above Apple iPhone for 2009    :-\
Time magazine has named the Motorola Droid the No. 1 gadget of 2009, besting the iPhone 3GS and calling the handset the first to truly challenge Apple's groundbreaking smartphone.

Time said that the Droid is the best hardware companion to Google's Android mobile operating system yet, earning the phone its top honors for 2009.

"The Droid is a hefty beast, a metal behemoth without the gloss and finish of the iPhone, but you don't miss it," the magazine said. "The Droid's touchscreen is phenomenally sharp and vivid, it has an actual physical (not great, but good enough) keyboard, and best of all, the Droid is on Verizon's best-of-breed 3G network. It's Android's first credible challenge to the iPhone."

Apple's iPhone still made the list, and earned praise. But the device came in fourth, behind the Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader, and the Dyson Air Multiplier.

"Take the iPhone. Make it faster. There, you're done," the story said. "Yes, the 3GS has a better camera — with video. And it has a compass and voice control. Those are all improvements over the original. But the main point of, and the best thing about, the new iPhone is speed. It has more of it. Period."

Hype surrounding the Droid continues to linger more than a month after the device first debuted. This despite the fact that the handset managed to sell 100,000 units in its first weekend, compared with over a million units of the iPhone 3GS sold in its first three days at retail.

While comparisons between the Droid and iPhone are inevitable regardless, Motorola has encouraged them with a series of advertisements geared towards men. One recent ad suggested the iPhone is feminine, comparing it to a "tiara-wearing digitally clueless beauty pageant queen." Motorola then portrays its Droid as a fast, efficient device that isn't worried about looks.

One recent study found that buzz surrounding the Droid had helped to propel the brand perception of Motorola beyond that of Apple for men ages 18 and up.

The rest of Time's top 10 gadgets list for 2009, following the iPhone 3GS, in order, is: Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, Dell Adamo XPS, FinePix Real 3D W1, Casio G-Shock GW7900B-1, Beats Solo by Dr. Dre, and Panasonic G10 Series Plasma HDTVs.

Where are you getting your information from?  PR is not a product review....  That's not how pr people "pimp thier shit", and there are laws against what you mentioned.  For example: in radio, it's called payolla and plugola.  Face it, this year, there is a better phone out there in (some peoples eyes) than the Iphone.  Not a big deal.

QFT.  Couple this with GPS, you have no more fucking privacy.  Screw that.  How many times do you talk to chicks chilling at home and now you have to actually get dressed and shit.

Sure it would be fun for phone sex, but this is just shit.  Asians are already using this technology with their cells.

Remember on the Jetsons’ cartoon when Jane was looking ratty and got a (video) phone call?  She had to put on a glam mask of her own face to take the call. Yeah.  It will be like that.  :D

Anyway, you don’t have to use the video function when you don’t want to; you can just take it as a voice only call.

I wouldn't use the video feature but you know the women would be questioning you on why.

No, you can't cause then the bitch is gonna start freaking and flipping on why you didn't want to talk to her in video format and who you were with and that while she was calling you, some other chic was bouncing up and down your dick... at least that's the shit I gotta deal with all the time...that leads to a 3 day fight and drama....FUCK

Technology always will have  pros and cons.
Your g/f can track you. But... you can track her too. think about it.
But that would be perfect for parents.

If you need to use the phone over seas, there's nothing much you can do about the phone bill.

Using the WiFi capabilities of the iPhone or iPod touch, an operator can surf the Net, showcase photos, and display video on a high-definition television at a resolution of 720i, as well as listen to music on a home stereo system.

The dock. which retails for about eighty bucks, arrives with a component AV cable, mini HDMI cable, and a USB AC adapter. So no matter what your need is in the moment - connecting to a TV, charging your handset, or synchronizing with a computer - the dock has you covered. The dock also comes with a nifty little remote control with a 30-foot range for selecting content, adjusting volume and controlling selections.
